:pullhair: My friend's Toshiba Satellite L505-s6946 is running Vista Service Pack 2. He googled a topic. The top choice sent him to a porn site. Then the screen immediately filled with a white screen and a place to click titled "submit". He shut down the computer promptly. Restart of the computer showed the same thing. Earlier in the week, Avast had dealt with several Java exploits. I uninstalled Java version 6 update 24. The machine is working pretty well. The main weirdness is that Task Manager is not displaying properly. I am attaching a screenshot of it. We would really appreciate your help in getting it cleaned up.

I had the same probglem with it.I checked msconfig in safe mode and found nothing. Avast Quick scan was clean. I was able to do Safe Mode with Networking and installed Malware Bytes. The quick scan found and removed 2 Trojan.Ransom files. I searched What The Tech for FBI or Ransom. Unfortunately I didn't look at the self-help removal until just before posting this. Unfortunately, I can't do System Restore because Microsoft indicated that Sophos combined with the Malicious Removal tool would clean it up. Nothing found. They also said to turn off System Restore because the virus could hide there.

The machine is working pretty well. The main weirdness is that Task Manager is not displaying properly. I am attaching a screenshot of it. We would really appreciate your help in getting it cleaned up.

============= FINISH: 12:48:40.91 ===============
I am attaching the zip. Thank you!
Hi MsMagoo, welcome to the forum.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

They also said to turn off System Restore because the virus could hide there.

Wish "they" would quit posting this advice. While it's true that System Restore points can contain malware turning system Restore off will not help in cleaning the machine. An infected restore point can not infect a machine unless it is restored to that point. An infected Restore point is better than none at all.

So before we start please re-enable system Restore. Once it's turned on it will automatically create a restore point.

Try this for task manager. double click on any white border area.

Any particular issues?
Hello oldman960, Thanks for taking a look at my case. I have re-enabled System Restore per your request. I am not able to get the task manager to change the display by clicking anywhere on it. The computer is running pretty well. It makes me nervous that the webcam menu opens when the computer starts up. I need to remove that from startup, for sure. -MsMagoo
Hi MsMagoo,

Did you try double clicking right above the word task? Doubling clicking in any of the areas indicated should restore it. You need to double click very fast.

📎post_98569_1368383872.jpg

With task manager open what happens when you press Crt and the tab key?

Press the Windows key and the R key. A Run box should open. Copy and paste msconfig into the run box and click ok.
  • click the Continue button or type the administrator’s password to proceed.
  • click the startup tab
  • locate the webcamera and uncheck it
  • it should be named TWebCamera and the executable is TWebCamera.exe
  • click apply, click ok
Reboot the computer. If you receive a message from the System Configuration Utility check the box beside "Don't show this message……". This will prevent the message from being shown in subsequent reboots.
:smack: For some reason, like skim reading, I had only been single clicking the Task Manager. it's fine now. I successfully disabled both Toshiba Web Cam and Smart Face Watcher. What shall I do next? -Ms JMagoo
Hi MsMagoo,

Any problems?

The logs look ok. Let's get an online scan.

As a Vista/Win7 user you will need to right click your browser icon and select "Run as Administrator" in order to run this scan.
  • Do not use this instance of your browser for anything besides doing this scan
  • When the scan is complete and the results saved, close that instance of your browser
  • Open a new one the usual way and post the results in this topic.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Go here to run an online scannner from
ESET

(Note: You can use Internet Explorer or FireFox for this scan. If you use FireFox you will be asked to install an additional component. Please allow this.)

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is Checked.
  • Click Scan.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • When the scan completes, click List of found threats
  • click Export to Text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan.
  • Include the contents of this report in your next reply

Note - when ESET doesn't find any threats, no report will be created.
  • Push the back button.
  • Push Finish
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
Hi Oldman960, ESET found one very common infection C:\Program Files\ElectionTracker_59EI\Installr\1.bin\59EIPlug.dll Win32/Toolbar.MyWebSearch application
I successfully deleted that file. I ran quick MalwareBytes and it came up clean. Ran full scan with Avast. It found a file that I had seen in Hijackthis and wondered about. It was successfully moved to the chest. The subsequent boot scan was clean. I think that we are in fine shape. Shall I clean up my files and close the case? Thank you for your help. MsMagoo

Hi MsMagoo,

I can't see the entire filepath in the screenshot but judging by the file extension I would guess it was in the temporary internet files. Not sure where you would have seen it in HJT as it does not show in the OTL log. If you want to see the entire path place the cursor on the little line nezt to Severity. Holding the left mouse button down slide it to the right. The full path should be visible.

From your desktop please delete
  • any notepads we may have created
  • DDS
  • FRST
You can uninstall Sophos Virus Removal Tool if you are finished with it.

Next, open OTL.exe
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
  • Do Not copy the word CODE
  • please note the fix starts with the :
:Services

:Commands
[emptytemp]
[createrestorepoint]

Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered
No need to post the log.

Just in case there something in an old restore point we'll reset that so you are starting fresh.

Next, click the Windows key and the R key
  • in the run box type in cleanmgr and click ok
  • Select the More options tab
  • In the System Restore and Shadow copies section click the Clean up button and Ok it
  • Click on Delete button when Windows asks whether are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point.
This will remove all restore points except the most recent one which we just created when you ran OTL.

You can get the newest version of java from HERE Scroll down a wee bit to JRE.

You may want to browse this topic for some tips.
Oldman960, the reason you didn't see that file was that I originally ran HJT for myself, but didn't include it since DDS has a pseudo-report. I assumed they were the same. Sorry!

I am not reinstalling Java. I'm recommending that my friends and family members not install Java unless they absolutely need it, until they have the security issues with it better resolved.

OTL did not run right the first time, so I ran it again. I think that we are in great shape. Thank you for your help. MsMagoo
Hi MsMagoo, Though the HJT log is from before we did anything I still don't see it in the log. I'm pretty sure it was just a temporary internet file. I think you are ok. You are very welcome.
