Both Malwarebytes and ESET show no issues.
The computer in general seems more responsive.
I still have a non-functional Internet Explorer - what would be the best fix for that?
What diagnostics should I run for my wife's machine?
Thank you so much for your time.

IE not on the list of programs. Restarted and logged into my user, but my home screen is not coming up. I see the background, the taskbar came up briefly, but it is just got the little spinning thing. should i do a hard restart?
I opted for the hard shutdown and it came up (there is a god!). It was unusually slow, however.
IE not listed on the list of programs. Original IE folder in C/Program Files (x86), but the program icon is not in the folder. The taskbar shortcut and Windows menu/All Programs still starts to open but it never completes.
Use Revo to check and see if Internet Explorer is listed. If not just continue on and download Internet Explorer 10 and install. Be sure to reboot when done to make sure changes have taken affect.
1.Revo Uninstaller Pro
Please download Revo Uninstaller Pro and save it to your desktop. (This version is a fully functional, 30 day free trial)
Vista-W7 Users: You must right-click on "RevoUninProSetup.exe", and select "Run As Administrator" to install. If UAC prompts, allow it.
From the list of programs click on Internet Explorer
Chose "Uninstall". When prompted click Yes.
Make sure the advanced option is checked… then click Next.
The program will run, when prompted… click Yes… then Next.
Once the program has searched for leftovers click Next.
Check ONLY the bolded items on the list then… click Next… then Yes.

there is still an IE folder with all its stuff in C/Program Files (x86). should i leave that in place or put it in the trash? I am trying to ascertain whether that folder will create problems with the install.
thanks!
I downloaded IE 10, and when I started the install I got this message:
Internet Explorer did not finish installing. Setup can't continue because a more recent version of IE is installed on your computer.
I still have a shortcut on my task bar that initiates the application which doesn't complete loading.
It is also in Windows Menu/All Programs, which also behaves in the same manner.
It does not appear to be in C/Program Files (x86)/Internet Explorer (see attached).
It does not show on the list of installed programs either in Control Panel or RevoUninstall.
thanks!
Found it! Did the delete.
After the uninstall it prompted me to restart, which I did.
I did not delete the IE folder in C/Program File (x86) before the restart.
Upon restart, IE 9 launched and is fully functional.
Task bar and Start/All Programs both have functional short cuts.
I looked into C/Program Files and C/Program Files (x86) and both have an IE folder.
I await your instructions.
Thanks!
Upon restart, IE 9 launched and is fully functional.
That's good to hear.
If you are happy using Internet Explorer 9, then leave well enough alone.
If you would like to update to Internet Explorer 10, I would make sure I have Windows Updates set to automatic, and install the IE update that way. If should make for a smoother operation.
1.Windows Automatic Updates
Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button [external image: Posted Image], clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.
In the left pane, click Change settings.
Choose the option that you want.
Under Recommended updates, select the Include recommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about updates check box, and then click OK. [external image: Posted Image] Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
I did Windows Update, and installed IE10 which was on the list of optional updates. on restart, the previous problem of IE not loading completely returned.
I checked the list of installed programs and IE was not listed.
I did the uninstall updates again, rebooted, and IE9 returned and is functional.
I checked the list of installed programs, and IE is still not listed.
I checked the list of installed updates, and it lists IE 9.
The Start menu shows IE and IE (64-bit). Both launch.
Folders for IE are in C/Program Files and C/Program Files (x86).
