L.S.,

System forced me to a startpage, just ran CWShredder, which seems to work until now. Other problems I am still encountering are:
- not allowed to install security patches;
- no possibility to run scan86.exe under dos (not enough memory);
- installing of McAfee Internet Security Suite v. 6 does not work (error writing to ..\mscsubclnres.dll);
- pop-ups with virusscan offers.

At first glance managed to eliminate some viruses (PWC-Narod, Proxy-Mitglieder, Keylogger-mxx, Startpage-DU) according to online virusscans, but the problems persist. Please assist, f.y.i. I herewith copy My Hijack log:

Thanks in advance,

I'm back to the about:blank page, so apparently at start up of my PC all the settings in the registry, etc. are being regenerated, despite CWShredder. Could I please be advised which lines to delete in below log to sort this and the other problems out? Thks,
As I see that other members to this forum who have posted messages more recently, have meanwhile received support to solve their issues, could someone please explain the criteria for giving/getting such support?
Hi vppons!

Some logs might take longer than others to respond to due to the fact that the helper looking at your log might not know how to help you with your problem but might be able to help some other that posted after you did. Having said that let us try to fix your problem.

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

Do a virus scan here.
If you get report of files that can’t be cleaned / deleted please write down the filenames and locations and post that in your reply.

Then please do this since it’s better to use automated tools to get rid of the bad stuff use these 2 programs first before doing the final cleaning with HJT

First use Spybot S&D. (Version 1.3)
Spybot
Unzip, and update. Install the updates and run. Delete all that it marks in red.
Reboot

Then it’s time for Ad-Aware
Ad-Aware
Install and update by using the globe icon. Restart your computer and run Ad-Aware.
Press scan now and select drives and/or partitions to be scanned. When done select all and click next. Remove all checked items and then reboot your computer.

Please go to this page and read the instructions for how to configure Spybot S&D & Ad-Aware
How To Setup Spybot SD and Ad-Aware

Then post a new HJT log as a reply to this topic.
Dear Lappen, First of all thanks for your support, much appreciated. When trying to run the housecall.trendmicro virusscan, I'm thrown out of Internet Explorer, typically what also happens when I try to install security updates or try to visit other antivirus sites. I've tried to run CWShredder, clean up the recycle bin and temp folders again, and approach the site immediately afterwards, but unfortunately to no avail. So step 1 already failed, what to do now? VPP :(
Lappen, Did so on previous occasions (have both programs installed for some time now), did not help. but will do so again, and get back to you with a new log. vpp
Ok I will wait for your next log, be sure that you update the programs and that you have configured them as described in the prowided link
Lappen,

Programs updated and configured as per your link, log file as follows:

    C:\Program Files\phison\shicon98.exe

Look in the version tab and write down the description and see if there is any info about company and so on and post back the info here.

  • Rescan with HJT and post a new log here. Also please describe how your computer behaves.
Dear Lappen,

I'm back again, did not have much time lately to sit behind the PC.

I did everything you advised in your last message.

1. I do not manage to delete O18- Protocol line in the registry, it comes back every time you run Hijack again.

2. Deleted both activeX controls.

3. tisdnmon.exe is a file for my ISDN modem (which I do not use any longer since I have ADSL).

4. shicon98.exe does not have a version tab. Since the creation date (3/2/2003 is after the modified date (23/11/2001) I decided already to delete the line in the registry and rename the file. In the registry it indicated "showicon". No noticeable consequences: system works as before, no visible loss of icons, but bugs are still in the system.

Herebelow hijack log, followed by a description of PC behaviour.

7. No possibility to install a virus checker (McAfee).
8. No possibility to install MSN Messenger update.
9. After cleaning up the system, rebooting, manage to update Spybot and Adaware, afte running IE this is no longer possible, until I run them again and reboot. System pretends as if they are up to date.

These are most of the symptoms.

Look forward to your advice.

Behaviour:
1. After cleaning with CWShredder, Spybot anmd Adaware, problems to run Int. Explorer.
2. Startpage about: blank still produces another site frequently, with warning for viruses, hackers.
3. Creation of a Temporary Internet Files directory, History and Cookies under the Temp directory in Windows.
4. After running IE, Spybot eliminates DSO Exploit every time, CWShredder deletes CWSearch and 6 registry files.
5. No possibility to install an Outlook Express update.
6. No possibility to start PC in safe mode.

1. What are the problems? Any error messages?

2. Could you try to set your startpage to for example http://www.google.com/ and see if it stays like that or if it changes

3. That is normal

4. DSO explot returning is a known bug in Spybot
That CWShredder deletes CWSearch and 6 registry files everytime is not that good since it showes that you keep getting reinfected we have to take care of that

5. Any error messages?

6. What happens when you try to start in safe mode?

7. What happens when you try to install?

8. Any error messages?

9. Sorry I dont really understand what you are trying to say here.

I would recomend that you unintstal Netzip, Real Download, Netscape Smart Download, reason see here >> http://editor.actrix.co.nz/byarticle/spyw.htm

Reboot post back about the above and in the meantime I will research your about: blank problem
Dear Lappen, 1. IE simply does not start up. Checking the processes, it indicates IE is not responding, and thus requires to end the process. 2. It changes back to about: blank, which is in reality not blank, but another site. 3. Also, if the Temp Internet Files and the others already exist, and IE is routed to those directories in the personal settings? 4. OK, will wait for your instructions. 5. The site indicates the installation failed. The process of installing seems to proceed normally initially, but then finishes very quickly (install progress line fills up in 2 seconds) and then the site returns withe the comment the update was not installed. 6. The system hangs, only a blue screen. Requires rebooting. 7. Same as with installing the update: after some intial processing, the system beeps twice, then finishes almost immediately with the notification I mentioned in my first message: "error writing to ..\mscsubclnres.dll". 8. I'll check tonight, but as far as I remember no specifics. At start-up system indicates whether I want to update messenger, as a new version is available, but if I answer yes, the system does not allow it, and then repeats the question. 9. What I meant here, is that if I start the programs directly after rebooting, and I try to update them prior to running the scans, they both return a message after 2 seconds, indicating the system is updated, or no new version is available. If you try it a 2nd time (recognising that an update could never have been so fast), both systems hang (task manager: process is not responding). Hope it is clearer now. I'll try to uninstall all three systems, although I have not seen them as programs. Should I look into Add/remove programs of Windows? Regards,
Dear Lappen,

Uninstalled Real Download, did not manage to find the other 2 programs, please instruct. "O18 - Protocol …" pops up again after rerunning Hijack, and cannot be deleted. Deleted "… tisdnmon.exe".

Notice of MSN Messenger at start up: "A newer version is available. You must install the newer version in order to continue. Would you like to do this now?". When choosing "yes", the sytem does not download, and returns: "MSN Messenger could not download and verify the update file. Would you like to visit the website.".

Herebelow the new log after unistalling Real Download. Note: I have not cleaned with CWShredder, Spybot and Adaware this time, which you will see in the registry files.
