iM ONLY RUNNING WIN DEFENDER AS SECURITY

Windows Defender is useless and should be disabled.

I can give you recommendations for free antivirus programs but according to the SecurityCheck program that you ran on Apr 28th, Avast is still installed and updated.

It is very important that you are not running more than one so you need to check in your Programs list.

Click Start, Control Panel, Programs, and then Programs and Features. Let me know if Avast is there or let me know if you uninstalled it after the 28th.

if you're not sure, it is probably best to do another check:

Run Security Check again following the instructions here.

Thanks

I'm afraid I don't understand any of that.

When you say "I closed it", what is "it"?

What kept "going really fast"?

when i clicked the start menu it loaded that same name ( >>>> …….)

Can you tell me the exact name.

I have Avast but it wont let me update or turn it on.

Try uninstalling it, then install one from the list below.

Do NOT install more than one or they will fight against each other and render both ineffective.• Free Avast Home Edition
• Avira AntiVir® Personal Edition Classic
• Microsoft Security Essentials

I will explain. When I closed the program Windows Movie Maker Windows, the program asked if I wanted to save. I clicked yes to save. Then the "save as" box came up so I could type in a file name. Bedfore I could type a fil e name, the program named its self the following name: >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the file name kept going as if the > key was stuck. I then hit cancel and closed the program down immediately. Then I clicked on the start menu and immediately that same file name (>>>>>>>) loaded itself into the search box and it kept going as if the > key was stuck. I shut down the computer. Later that day I went on Firefox and I noticed at the top of the page just under the browser bar that same file name (>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>) running along the top. I could only see the bottom half of >>>>>>>>>>>>>. it was running like a ticker across the top of the webpage. I shut down the computer. :o ok next problem: Avast is installed. It will not let me do anything to it, including uninstalling it. I get the following error when trying to uninstall: AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error. I went on avast website and preformed the solution they suggested. 1. I made sure that it was set to 'automatic in Services. 2. I went to Add Remove Programs and tried to Repair the program. I ended up getting the same error message. Can I go online in safe mode to send u any further logs, etc If all antivirus programs are disabled can I download a new one? And I thought we were almost done! Ill be positive and say only a few more stops to go! :) Thank you.

Ill be positive and say only a few more stops to go! smile.gif

Nice one - I'll do the same. :)

Windows Movie Maker is renowned for using excessive memory and crashing, (Google it and you'll see), so that is not related I wouldn't think.

I think you should abandon Windows Movie Maker and try downloading a free alternative, (I'll see if I can find one to suggest - I don't do film-editing so don't know of one offhand).

Have you tried uninstalling Avast in safe mode?

If that doesn't work, do this:

Let’s try forcing the uninstall

Download Revo Uninstaller
  • double click the installation file on the desktop to run the installer
  • let it install to the default location
  • double click the new Revo Uninstaller Icon on the desktop to start the program.
You will now see a list of installed programs that Revo Uninstaller can remove.
  • locate the program you are uninstalling <Avast
  • right-click the icon then choose Uninstall
  • click Yes to the warning and choose the Uninstall Mode
  • choose the Advanced option and then click Next
  • this will launch the programs built in uninstaller. Be patient it can take several seconds
  • once the uninstaller is done click Next
  • Revo Uninstaller will now scan for leftover information. Be patient it can take several seconds.
  • once this scan is done click Next
  • you will then be presented of the leftover entries found by Revo Uninstaller
  • look at ALL of the entries to ensure they relate to the uninstall
  • next, click Select All > Delete to remove the entries
  • click Next
  • if there are any program file folders left over you will be presented with a list to be removed
  • again look at ALL of the entries to ensure they are related to the uninstall
  • click Select All > Delete to remove the entries
  • click Finish to go back to the uninstall list
  • close the program.
Let me know how that goes.

Ok Avast has been removed! Thanks. When I ran the Revo uninstaller the same avast error massage came up (error reading product data from c:\programfiles\alwilsoftware\avast5\setup\part-setup_abp-ffffffff.vpx). I clicked ok and the program continued. And all was removed (I hope) I downloaded the Avast you suggested onto a disc, so i can install that. I'll wait for your ok. Oh when i went the WHATTHETECH.COM on chrome right now that same toolbar appeared at at the bottom of the page (the one that was on firefox). Ok im waiting for my next move
Good work.

that same toolbar appeared at the bottom of the page

What kind of toolbar is it?

You can go ahead and install Avast.

When you’ve done that, please run Malwarebytes and SecurityCheck again.

Can you tell me how your computer is now.
Im sorry its not a toolbar it is an ad banner (the same one from post #14), except this time it appeared on the Chrome browser when I went on the whatthetech.com site. It takes up an inch along the bottom and keeps opening ads that cover the entire page. I will install Avast and run the scans u mentioned. Have a good day!
Hi - Sorry its taking so long. I has issues with the antivirus. It's finally done and will run the other scans again and get back to u ASAP.
Hi- Ok everything involvng technology and communications (cell phone, computer, email, mifi) are all giving me problems. Mercury must be in retrograde or something. I just added my reply to you and the page went blank and it was never added.
So I will try again

I added Avira but i had to remove it (with Revo) because (don't laugh….ok u can) I couldnt remember the password  the next morning and the one i wrote down wouldn't work! So I now have Security Essentials. It seemed to take hours and hours to update so I did their manual update and it went much faster. I ran the full scan and and it came back clean. I re ran the scans u wanted again after Security Essentials was installed and they are listed below.

Any Browser suggestions? IE seemed to take a long time so i added chrome which started acting weird so i added firefox. There are kids here who will be using this computer and they try to download things, which is prob why the computer problems started. Chrome lets all downloads go through even if i have selected to not allow downloads. Firefox stops all downloads. Is there a way to allow pics and music to be downloaded only and not apps on their User. And can I set it up to automatically scan those downloads?
