Hello inkster

There is nothing dubious showing in your latest system logs, they appeare to be cleanj (along with MBAM and Botdefender).

When you run a full scan with your installed ESET, is anything detected?

We can check in case there may be some system file corruption, but right now the issues you are describing do not appear to be malware related.

Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

You may be prompted for your Vista installation disk if files need to be replaced. Please have it at the ready just in case.

Let me know if ESET detects anything and how the system file check goes in your next reply.
Hi JonTom, Thank you for this…. I think I bought the computer pre-loaded with Vista, as I have no installation disk. Am nervous of doing as you ask…. What do you think? Many thanks.
Hello inkster

Am nervous of doing as you ask….What do you think?

There really is no need to be nervous. You have ESET installed so it can be opened, updated and run as usual.

System File Checker is part of the Windows Operating System and is designed to look for damage to system files. If you do not have your installation disk (but are nevertheless prompted for it) you can simply exit the scan.

Right now the problems you are having do not appear to be being caused by malware as far as I can tell. Running the ESET scan is another way of checking to see if anything has been missed, and SFC checks for damage/corruption rather than malware. Both scans are designed to run on your machine and will cause no harm.
Hello JonTom…. So sorry, I have been struggling with this all. I have tried to do an ESET scan countless times, but it keeps freezing at 14%, whether I do a full custom scan, or a smart scan. So I haven't been able to complete a scan without having to force a restart. Meanwhile, I did the system scan you asked, and it told me that it found corrupt files, but was unable to fix some of them. It said that details were included in a log (CBS log), and it gave me the reference for the log, which I can find, but it won't let me open it. I have again restarted the computer at least 4 times this evening, and the I am restarting the computer again, as I can't even get online now. The wifi is fine, as I am on the iPad now it is giving me no problems. It looks as though the computer has once again frozen, this time using to close down…… Want to throw the whole thing out of the window at the moment to be honest. Thank you for sticking with me this far! Inkster
Hello inkster

Want to throw the whole thing out of the window at the moment to be honest

I appreciate your frustration inkster. I know exactly what it feels like when a computer is not working as it should. You are doing a good job trying to troubleshoot the problem.

I did the system scan you asked, and it told me that it found corrupt files, but was unable to fix some of them

From what you describe it sounds as though the problem may possibly lie with some corrupted system files. Even if corrupted files are not the root cause of the problem, your system appears to have been damaged in some capacity (not good).

All of your system logs appear to be malware free. That being the case, the next step would be to allow system file checker to repair the damaged files.

In order to do this you will need to get hold of a Windows Vista Business Edition installation disk. You may be able to borrow one from work (if this is a business machine rather than your own personal system), or borrow one from a friend or a computer store.

If the above is not an option, you could perform a system restore to a point before you were having problems. This (in my opinion) would be the best course of action since it carries minimum risk.

Information about performing a system restore for Windows Vista can be found here Please read the information provided under "Restoring Windows Vista to a previous State"

I did a little searching on the error message you described earlier:

"Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog. Failure - security options"

There appear to be a number of possible solutions to this problem (different things work for different people depending on their particular situation).

I have included two links (below) to solutions that others have found helpful in the past.

Before trying any of these options do note that I have never tried them myself and so cannot vouch for their effectiveness. Should you wish to try some of the suggestions made in the forums I have linked you to, you do so at your own risk. For this reason it would be wise to backup all of your important files before you begin.

If none of the above suggestions are helpful (and since at the present time this does not appear to be a malware related issue), I can only suggest that you create a new thread in our Microsoft Windows Forum. Our Tech team are very good at what they do and will provide excellent assistance.

Let me know how you get on with the above suggestions :)
So sorry JonTom…. Have been wrestling with trying to back everything up, while the system freezes more and more often….. I will try and do the system restore tomorrow and let you know how I get on….. (the window option looking increasingly tempting though…..) Many thanks, Inkster
Hello inkster

The window will always be there, we have a few things we can try before you use it

Tell you what, before you run the system restore lets try this:

  • Temporary File Cleaner

    • Download TFC to your desktop.
    • Close any open windows.
    • Right click the TFC icon and select "Run as Administrator" to run the program.
    • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run.
    • Click the Start button to begin the process.
    • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
    • The program should not take long to finish.
    • Once complete it should automatically reboot your machine.
    • If your machine does not reboot automatically, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean.
    • Note: After running TFC your machine may take slightly longer to boot the first time. This is normal.

We can try the following startup procedure to see if there is anything interfering with your machines normal function (besides the corrupted system files).

The whole procedure takes a while, so lets go through it together a few steps at a time:

  • Perform a Clean Startup

    • The following procedure will allow you to determine if anything else is contributing to the problem:
    • Click on Start
    • Type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
    • If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
    • In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click Selective Startup on the General tab.
    • Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
    • Note The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.
    • Click the Services tab.
    • Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
    • Click Disable All, and then click OK.
    • When you are prompted, click Restart.

    • After the computer starts, monitor the machine to see if your original issue persists.
    • If the problem does not occur after you restart, the interference is occurring because of a background program or service.
    • Once you have determined if the probem occurs when services are disabled, enable your machine to start normally as follows:
    • Click on Start
    • Type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
    • If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
    • On the General tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart.

Give the above a try and let me know whether anything appears to be interfering with the normal functioning of the machine.
Hello JonTom…. Many thanks for your help and suggestions…. I am currently running the TFC programme on the laptop and it has been running without much apparent progress for over half and hour now….. Which isn't really tallying with your statement that it shouldn't take too long….. What do you think? Should I force a restart and run it again? Many thanks, Inkster
Hello inkster

What do you think? Should I force a restart and run it again?

It should only take a minute or two to run so what you describe does not sound right at all.

Try a restart, but if TFC does not run again it may be time to try the other suggestions.
Ok, finally managed to get TFC to run after 3 false starts and freezes…. So that is fine. Have now done the clean start up, and restarted….. It is difficult to know if it is running the same way as before. So far, I have not had to re-start, but I have had some slowness and non responsive moments. Restart itself took AGES. Think I will try and get some work done (not working hugely effectively these days!) and see how it goes….. Many thanks, will get back with update in a little while…..
Good morning JonTom, So, complete freeze again last night of all google chrome tabs, left it overnight to think about things, and am having to force restart this morning. So not sure what next….. Window? New thread in microsoft forum? Try and find some vista disks and do a system restore? Many thanks for all your help and patience to date.
