To run SFC, open a Elevated Command prompt, then type

sfc /scannow (note the space between sfc and /scannow).

Try a flash drive instead of a CD, Download - Auto-installer for USB Key (Win 9x/2k/xp/7) *NEW!*, unzip and run Memtest86+ USB Installer.exe. It will format the flash drive if you tell it to. I used a small, 16MB flash drive and it had 8.5MB left when done (MB, not GB).

Boot the flash drive to run memtest86+.

You have 5 anti-virus/anti-spyware programs starting at boot, that's way too much and could be the cause of your Windows Explorer problem. May not be too but I think it's worth looking at.

Uninstall each one, one at a time and see if Windows Explorer starts working at some point. If yes then eliminate the last one you uninstalled. I would recommend uninstalling all of them and installing Microsoft Security Essentials instead, and Malware Bytes Anti Malware, nothing else. If not you can always reinstall them when done, though I recommend not doing so.

If none of this helps then I think it's time to make sure you have good backups of your data and do a Repair Install. There is a good tutorial here:

I'll start on it this evening All but the Symantec product 'should' be on demand Most of the rest I recognize and have been installed for many months without a problem No matter, I will follow your instructions and see what happens. Would a good full backup from the first of the month, before the problem started, be as good as the repair install or is the install better? I can do either Thanks Dick

I would definitely try the backup first since it was created before the problem started. Do that before doing anything else.
