All the lights are on the WD backup and I tried to backup and it said the drive wasn't there. The port seems a tad wiggly, but not bad at all. Is there a way to test these or what should I do? Thanks.
There are a few things to check, but how far you go depends mostly on any warranty there may be, followed by how happy\able you are to open it up etc., so lets try and narrow down where the problem may be. To start with are other devices picked up in using that USB port ? and have you tried any other ports ? That will help rule out the immediate connection. Next go into the Control Panel - Admin Tools - Comp Management, then launch Disk Management on the left, have a look at what it reports, and see if the external drive is shown, it may be possible it needs initialising, and\or formatting before the system can see it, if it's not showing at all then the problem lies on the external drive side. Should this be the case then comes the 2 things I first mentioned, as if you aren't comfortable doing this, or more importantly if there is any warranty on it, you need to be getting an RMA or someone else to do this, but that said, apart from the warranty issue there is nothing to be worried about, but long story short you need to add the drive into a desktop (if it's ide set jumper to Slave), needless to say use caution by removing the mains lead and take static precautions, if the system then picks the drive up then the problem is with the lead(s), or the external housing, see what you find trying this and go from there.
