Hello,

I have a windows xp sp3. I cannot copy and paste (right clicking or copy or ctrl c) I also cannot drag and drop files.
The pc just freezes up. I ran a scan with bitdefender and it came back with no virus.
I also cannot copy and paste on external hdd.
I first noticed the problem on the external hdd but the pc was still doing it, then just 2 days ago the pc stopped copy and pasting.
The external hdd is new and this problem started around the time I added it. (maybe its that??)
if it is the external hdd I have save my important things on it and can't get them off (can't send to).
I have no windows os discs so I can't reformat. (unless there is another way but I'm not that savvy). I have lots of stuff I need to keep.
I can copy and paste in browser. I have tried starting the computer from the best configuration but it made no difference, still won't copy / paste.
I am feeling quite frustrated and spent all day on this issue. :(

I have this log from hijack this.

Hi hat3zazula,
Welcome to WTT

Run Disk Cleanup to remove general clutter. Also open and empty your clipboard.

To run Disk Cleanup: Start / All programs / Accessories / System tools / Disk Cleanup

The Clipboard contains a record of your recent copy and paste inputs and can fill up.
To open Clipboard: Start / Run / type in Clipbrd / OK

1. Click on the word Edit located within your top tool bar area.
2. Then click on Delete from the pull down menu that appears.
3. When asked if you want to Clear the contents of the Clipboard, click Yes.
4. Close the Clipbook Viewer Window.

See if copy and paste works now.

Cheers,
Lee

This problem can occur after a Windows update.

1. Download and create a Reg. backup with ERUNT.

2. After backing-up your Reg. create a new restore point.

3. Try this XP Reg. fix from Kelly's Korner.
Scroll down to Line 233 (right column) , click on and download to desktop Enable Drag and Drop. Run the reg. fix by double-clicking on it. If it fixes drag and drop, your copy and paste should also be fixed.

PS edit:
If the above Reg. fix doesn't work, try this one as well on the same download page at Kell'y: 410 (right column) Fix IE7 Drag and Drop (should work on IE8 too).

1. Restore the Reg. To original from ERUNT backup

2. Reboot

3. Make a new ERUNT backup

4. Open regedit (start / run / type in regedit / enter )

5. go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Internet Settings/Zones/4
There should be an entry named 180D, right-click on it / modify / change the value to "0"

6. Reboot

See if that works.

Hi Lee, Did the restore, reboot, made new erunt backup. When I went into the zone 4 to modify it already had a zero in there. Still can't copy and paste.

Unlikely they are disabled, but check these two "drag and drop" options are enabled.

1. Right-click the Start button, choose Properties, and click Customize. If you’re using the default Start menu, click the Advanced tab and then, in the Start Menu Items box, select Enable Dragging And Dropping. (If you’re using the classic Start menu, in the Advanced Start Menu Options box in the Customize Classic Start Menu dialog box, select Enable Dragging And Dropping.)

2. Open IE / Tools / Internet Options / Security / Custom Level / scroll down to "Drag and Drop or Copy and Paste Files" / Check "Enable".

------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have been using a Reg. Cleaner or Reg. Optimizer you may have a corrupted file system.

You can check protected files by running System File Checker (sfc.exe). To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in: sfc /scannow (note the space between c /).

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity.

Which IE are you running, 7 or 8?

Hi Lee, When I do the sfc /scannow it says "Files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to DLL cache. Insert windows xp service pack 3 disc." I do not have the discs. What do I do? I am running IE8

OK, you have some corrupted system files.

You can make your own SP3 disk. Download the iso file from here:
http://www.microsoft...;displaylang=en

To burn the iso image to disk:

1. Download and run ImgBurn
2. Click on write image to disk
3. Browse for and select the SP3 iso
4. Set the write speed to 8x
5. To burn disk, click on write symbol at the bottom left

Hi Lee, Ok, I did all of the above. When I do the Run sfc /scannow and it asks for the disc I insert it . I then get "The CD you provided is the wrong CD please insert Windows XP professional SP3 Cd into your CD ROM drive. I did download the file from the link you provided (xpsp3_5512.080413-2113_usa_x86fre_spcd.iso 544.9 MB)

I also tried this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897128 but it made no difference.
It just asks for the home edition then.

I wish sfc would make up it's mind. Before it wanted a SP3 disk, now it wants something else :(

I also tried this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897128 but it made no difference.
It just asks for the home edition then.

...and that disk would be no good to you at all as you do not have the OS installed on your computer (?) You have XP home SP3, right (?).

Like many things that go wrong on a computer, there are often many causes and many fixes. Some will work on some PCs, but not on others with the exact same OS and the exact same problem.

Something we haven't tried yet that I would like to, is to remove SP3 and roll-back your IE8 to IE7 as this problem is often associated with a corrupted SP3 in combination with IE8 (they can both be added again later). IE8 cannot be rolled-back once SP3 is installed, so SP3 has to be removed first.

How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3 from your computer and then reboot.

To uninstall IE8, scroll down this page to see the simple instructions. Reboot after uninstalling.

I just looked and I seem to have the xp professional version sp3. I dl an windows xp pro sp3 iso and am running that now. Its running but every now and then it says "the cd you provided is wrong" I click and close it then says If you cancel windows may require you to insert disc later. Are you sure you want to skip this file?" I click yes and then it runs (for a bit) the it happens all again but its making progress. I'll let you know how it goes. If it doesn't work I will do what you suggested as above. Thanks so much all your input I greatly appreciate it. :)
