Hello, my first post here and naturally it's about a problem I have with one of our PCs, a Win 7 64 bit system. I hope I have set this post up correctly. :/ Some trojan malware is blocking all access to it. It shows only a single screen, beginning with "Your computer is blocked" and threatening legal prosecution and/or PC system destruction unless money is sent to pay a "fine" for some imagined illegal activity in order to regain the use of the PC again and so on. Using another PC, I browsed for solutions offered by others with a similar problem. Most of these solutions have you interrupt the system start-up with the F8 key and select Safe Mode and go on fixing it from there. That no longer seems to work. On this sick PC the start-up options screen is overlayed with a never seen before color pop-up that restricts choices to simply booting from bootable storage devices–there are no Safe Mode, repair or restore options available of any sort. Sadly, there are no system restore points for this PC. I tried using Hitman Pro Kickstart but the program would not finish installing to three different flash drives. I tried using MS Windows Defender Offline, installed on a flash drive, and did a full scan that lasted two hours. It found two trojans, Win32/Dynamer!dtc and JS/Reveton.A and offered to "clean" the PC which I agreed to. The PC was rebooted normally, but just short of showing the desktop the trojan returned, with its peculiar 48 hour coutdown timer reset to the full 48 hours. A second two hour scan revealed nothing, even though the problem remains. Following a suggestion for another poster in this forum with a similar problem, I used a Windows system repair disk to reach the system prompt and ran the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool. The output log file is attached. I hope someone can help me with this so I don't have to reformat the HD boot partition and put back all the software.

Hi hiznik, welcome to the forum.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

Give me a bit to go over the log. Be back asap.

Thanks
Hi hiznik,

Let's see if we can get you into wWindows and clean up the rest.

Next, download and save to your flashdrive the attached file fixlist.txt

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Next boot the the System Recovery Options like you did before when you did the FRST scan.

Once FRST is open
  • Press Fix button.
  • FRST will process the script in Fixlist.txt
  • It will make a log (fixlog.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

After running the FRST fix try booting the computer to normal windows.

📎fix.txt
Thank you! Per your instructions, here's what I have done: At system prompt, loaded FRST64 and tried the fix, but the program couldn't find the fix.txt file, so I shut it down, pulled the flash drive and renamed it to fixlist.txt then restarted and the fix was applied. At this point I decided to have FRST64 run another scan with output file in case it is needed. I rebooted the PC and, joy! the desktop is back! I haven't opened any programs yet until my heart stops racing, LOL and the PC is still offline net-wise and its other HDs are still disconnected. I'm not sure this whole thing is over yet. Here is FRST64's fixlog.txt: ———————————— Fix result of Farbar Recovery Tool (FRST written by Farbar) (x64) Version: 06-02-2013 Ran by [removed] at 2013-02-08 07:54:58 Run:1 Running from J:\ ============================================== HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\\Shell Value was restored successfully . Hi hiznik,

My bad on the file name. Good job.

How's the computer?

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Right click on ComboFix.exe, click Run as Administrator & follow the prompts.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. If after running combofix you recieve an message "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion" or similar reboot the computer.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with the combofix log.

Thanks
The infected PC seems to be running normally, but other than using Windows Explorer I haven't attempted to run any other software voluntarily and the machine is still isolated from the Internet and our local net. From the context of your reply, I gather you think it's okay to reconnect its other JBOD HDs and network and use the PC normally, possibly with the exception of installing/reinstalling software, running other scans and the like, yes? I think of this as running in "snapshot" mode, unless otherwise instructed, LOL To run ComboFix ,I disabled NIS antivirus and ComboFix complained that I missed the NIS adware/spyware function. I had trouble stopping ComboFix at this point and it wanted to proceed "at my own risk." I used the Task Manager to shut it down. To stop the adware/spyware function of NIS requires opening the NIS panel, going to settings->network settings and so on. This is not covered in the How to Disable your Security Programs link, BTW as the info on Norton security (meaning no disrespect) seems dated. The ComboFix.txt file is attached. Thank you again for your assistance.

Hi hiznik,

We'll have to see about updating the NIS instructions.

Now that you are running more or less normal let's get a better log at the machine.

Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Right click on OTL.exe and click "Run as Administrator" to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • In the window under Custom Scans/Fixes copy and paste the following

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.
I was just reading some forum rules and I realize I blundered by attachjing the requested files instead of posting them, so I will do that now. I apologize for my error.

Hi hiznik,

That's okay. It just makes reading the logs easier when they are posted.

Let's get a couple of more scans just to see if anything remains.

First though:

Your system has been infected by one or more Rootkits/Backdoor Trojans.

More information on Remote Access Trojans can be found here.

I strongly suggest you do the following immediately:
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

FrostWire 5.2.11

You have FrostWire 5.2.11, a P2P/file sharing program installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx

http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles…cles/art053.htm

I would recommend that you uninstall FrostWire 5.2.11, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove this program, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

Your java is out of date. Click your start button > Control Panel
  • Use the drop down menu beside view by and change it to small icons
  • locate java (32bit) in the list and click on it
  • when the java console opens click the update tab
  • Click update now
  • Decline any other installs that may be offered.

Next, clear the java cache

To clear the Java Plug-in cache:
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Java icon in the control panel.
  • On the General tab, Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.
  • On the Temporary Files Settings screen, Click Delete Files.
  • check all boxes
  • Click OK

Next

Download and save to your desktop Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Next

As a Vista/Win7 user you will need to right click your browser icon and select "Run as Administrator" in order to run this scan.
  • Do not use this instance of your browser for anything besides doing this scan
  • When the scan is complete and the results saved, close that instance of your browser
  • Open a new one the usual way and post the results in this topic.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Go here to run an online scannner from
ESET

(Note: You can use Internet Explorer or FireFox for this scan. If you use FireFox you will be asked to install an additional component. Please allow this.)

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is Checked.
  • Click Scan.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • When the scan completes, click List of found threats
  • click Export to Text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan.
  • Include the contents of this report in your next reply

Note - when ESET doesn't find any threats, no report will be created.
  • Push the back button.
  • Push Finish
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.

Please post back whith
  • MBAM log
  • ESET log if there was one.
Any problems?
Hi and thanks again. I am very grateful for your assistance. I began changing passwords yesterday on another PC, but won't have them used on the damaged PC until I feel confident it's clean.

Here's what I've done per your directions:

FrostWire 5.2.11 - Removed. It was installed by the PC's user some time ago.

Java - Updated.

Java cache - Cleared.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Quick scan done. This scan went very quickly and apparently found nothing wrong. The output log is below.

ESET - Internet Explorer was unable to complete startup of the online ESET scanner after I granted permission to install an ActiveX component during setup. Clicking Allow simply showed a more or less empty pop-up followed with an unrelated right-click style context menu. Reverted to Firefox. This scan did take some time (3-1/2 hours), but it scanned well over half a million files. Most of the time it spent analyzing some trusted software installation programs stored on a secondary disk. The scan exceeded the 1-hour disable duration I had initially selected for NIS Anti-Virus but I did not stop the scan because the scan had found a threat early on (reporting Win32/Reveton.N trojan) and this was a "one time only" scan deal from ESET, nor did I attempt to disable the Anti-Virus again while the scan was running. The scan appeared to finish normally, indicating it had found a single trojan moved previously by FRST. BTW, most of the time the scan's progress bar was at 99%! The output log follows below.

Here is the MBAM log:

Hi hiznik,

I do believe you are good to go. As you noted the ESET detection is a file we have quarantined. This wil be removed shortly.

Next, Right click on OTL.exe and chose Run as Administrator to run it
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
  • Do Not copy the word CODE
  • please note the fix starts with the :
:Services

C:\FRST\Quarantine

:Commands
[emptytemp]
[createrestorepoint]

Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered
No need to post the log.

We'll clean up the tools now.

From your desktop, please delete, if present
  • any notepads/logs that we created
From your flashdrive you can delete fixlist.txt and and other files we may have stored on it

Next

Click the Start button. Copy and paste the following line into the search box and click OK

Combofix /uninstall

Next

Open OTL then click the Clean Up button. You may get prompted by your firewall that OTL wants to contact the internet - allow this. A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will do some clean up tasks and delete some of the tools you have downloaded plus itself.

I suggest you keep MBAM. Keep it updated and use it regularly.

Some Recommendations and prevention tips

Basic security consists of 1 antivirus program, 1 resident antispyware program, 1 on demand antispyware program and a firewall. Those you have now with NIS and MBAM.

You should also use Spyware Blaster to help immunize your computer.

- SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Please post back if you have any problems.

Take care
Okay, following your instructions, I ran OTL with the fix and NIS popped up and said it was dealing with a security threat (a trojan name similar to that which I have been dealing with) and "removed" it. An OTL pop-up text report said some sort of move had failed. A reboot was requested and allowed, not sure if it was from OTL or NIS. I probably should have disabled NIS A-V before running the OTL fix. Next, clicking the Start button and entering Combofix/uninstall in the search box resulted in no results and some confusion on my part so I just moved on. Next, based on my experience running OTL with the fix, I disabled NIS Anti-Virus to run OTL and selected Clean Up and this seems to have proceeded normally. Spyware Blaster's website spoke much of stopping Internet Explorer from wandering into the line of fire, but does it do anything for Firefox, which is what we use around here? Disabled Windows DNS Client Service. Since I rarely use Internet Explorer I couldn't find a "tools" menu and so on ( I don't see any menus) in IE to make the changes you suggested, but I'm not going to worry about it now. Thanks again for getting us back on track with this PC. I do appreciate it, and to show it I have used the "donation" button in your signature. :)
Hi hiznik,

Thank you.

Let's make sure combofix is properly removed.

Download a new copy from HERE. Make sure you save it to your desktop.

Disable your antivirus program.

Click the start button and copy and paste the following line into the search box and hit enter. (don't miss the first " mark)

"c:\users\Architect77\Desktop\ComboFix.exe" /uninstall
