Hello

I picked up a used desktop and I would like to make sure is spyware/malware free before I start using it; its previous owner had some spyware problems with it in the past.

It was using solely "Kaspersky PURE 2.0" antivirus/firewall and Windows Defender for its protection when I got it, so I downloaded and installed Malwarebytes and Spybot S&D this past weekend, and then ran full scans using each of these programs; they all came back with no malicious items detected except for the Spybot which found some items. I ran everything again and had similar results (the Spybot found only five items this second time, but I think could only clean three of them).

I next installed HijackThis and there seems to be a couple of odd items amongst its results. I'll post the log and would really appreciate if someone could please take a look and see if anything about it is problematic. Thanks.

Here is my HijackThis log:

Welcome to the forum. I don't see any malware in the log, but HJT isn't really used anymore to deal with malware.

[*]Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {91da5e8a-3318-4f8c-b67e-5964de3ab546} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DBC80044-A445-435b-BC74-9C25C1C588A9} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {EE2AC4E5-B0B0-4EC6-88A9-BCA1A32AB107} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

———————————

If you want to do some more checking………

Download DDS by sUBs and post the scan results using Copy / Paste.
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds

Note: Vista and Windows 7 users:

1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them

1. Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
2. When done, two DDS.txt's will open. )DDS.txt and Attach.txt
3. Save both reports to your desktop.
4. Please copy and paste the contents of DDS.txt and Attach.txt back here.

———————————–

Next……………

Please download and run RogueKiller to your desktop.

Quit all running programs.

For Windows XP, double-click to start.
For Vista or Windows 7, do a right-click on the program, select Run as Administrator to start, & when prompted Allow to run.

Click Scan to scan the system.
When the scan completes > Close out the program > Don't Fix anything!

Don't run any other options, they're not all bad!!!!!!!

Post back the report which should be located on your desktop.

Hi MrC

That is good news, thanks.
I eliminated those four items using HJT as you recommended, and also ran those two diagnostic programs you provided links for (results posted below).

FYI, I made a couple of changes to my computer after posting yesterday: The Kaspersky shut itself down twice (!) yesterday while I was online, so I uninstalled it and installed Avast Free antivrus and Comodo free firewall instead (Comodo also installed a couple of other things with it: something called Geek Buddy and the Comodo Dragon browser - I uninstalled Geek Buddy, but haven't decided what to do with Dragon yet; I'll probably uninstall it since I mainly use Firefox and occasionaly IE).

I should also inform you that I have Vista's System Restore turned off at the moment; I'll turn it back on once I've got the final all-clear that my system appears clean.

Notes:
- I turned the Comodo firewall off while running the DDS and the RogueKiller tools.
- The DDS program gave me a warning message that said I should zip the Attach.txt file and post it in this message as an attachment, rather than just cut and paste it; is that security precaution - I am not sure how I zip it; do I need to download a program or is there something in Vista Windows that will do it for me (I'm unfamiliar with Vista as yet)?

Do I uninstall them, or just stop them from running at start-up? I haven't noticed any conflicts so far.
Something I forgot to mention earlier, is that SpywareBlaster is also installed on the computer.

Alrighty, I uninstalled SpyBoot; disabled Defender and Comodo Defence +
(as best as I can tell anyway - I'm posting another HJT log that perhaps you can check over and confirm that they're both disabled).

I also removed the Comodo Dragon browser mentioned previously.

Sorry for the delay, I missed your reply.

Looks Good…How is it???

Lets just check for any adware while you're here:

Please download AdwCleaner from here and save it on your Desktop.

AdwCleaner is a reliable removal tool for Adware, Foistware, toolbars and potentially unwanted programs.

AdwCleaner is a tool that deletes :
· Adwares (software ads)
· PUP/LPI (Potentially Undesirable Program)
· Toolbars
· Hijacker (Hijack of the browser's homepage)

It works with a Search and Deletion methode. It can be easily uninstalled using the "Uninstall" mode.

  • Right-click on adwcleaner.exe and select Run As Administrator (for XP just double click) to launch the application.
  • Now click on the Search tab.
  • Please post the contents of the log-file created in your next post.

Note: The log can also be located at C:\ >> AdwCleaner[XX].txt >> XX <– Denotes the number of times the application has been ran, so in this should be something like R1.

Please look over what was found, we're going to delete it all in the next step….if there's something you may want to keep…please let me know and I'll explain to why it shouldn't be on your system.

MrC
No problem. I ran the AdwCleaner and here's the report (I don't see anything there I want to keep): # AdwCleaner v2.111 - Logfile created 02/09/2013 at 16:12:37 # Updated 05/02/2013 by Xplode # Operating system : Windows Vista ™ Business Service Pack 2 (32 bits) # User : Lorri - LORRI-PC # Boot Mode : Normal # Running from : C:\Users\Lorri\Desktop\adwcleaner.exe # Option [Search] ***** [Services] ***** ***** [Files / Folders] ***** File Found : C:\Users\Lorri\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ar3lhlqm.default\searchplugins\Askcom.xml Folder Found : C:\ProgramData\Ask Folder Found : C:\Users\Lorri\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ar3lhlqm.default\extensions\{91da5e8a-3318-4f8c-b67e-5964de3ab546} ***** [Registry] ***** Key Found : HKCU\Software\AppDataLow\Software\Conduit Key Found : HKCU\Software\AppDataLow\Software\ConduitSearchScopes Key Found : HKCU\Software\AppDataLow\Software\SmartBar Key Found : HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{AFDBDDAA-5D3F-42EE-B79C-185A7020515B} Key Found : HKCU\Software\Softonic Key Found : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{FFB96CC1-7EB3-449D-B827-DB661701C6BB} Key Found : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Toolbar.CT2645238 Key Found : HKLM\Software\Conduit Key Found : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{AFDBDDAA-5D3F-42EE-B79C-185A7020515B} Key Found : HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\0FF2AEFF45EEA0A48A4B33C1973B6094 Key Found : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\conduitEngine Key Found : HKU\S-1-5-21-3744375563-162576609-959837935-1000\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{AFDBDDAA-5D3F-42EE-B79C-185A7020515B} ***** [Internet Browsers] ***** -\\ Internet Explorer v9.0.8112.16457 [OK] Registry is clean. -\\ Mozilla Firefox v18.0.2 (en-US) File : C:\Users\Lorri\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ar3lhlqm.default\prefs.js Found : user_pref("browser.search.order.1", "Ask.com"); Found : user_pref("browser.search.selectedEngine", "Ask.com"); ************************* AdwCleaner[R1].txt - [2027 octets] - [09/02/2013 16:12:37] ########## EOF - C:\AdwCleaner[R1].txt - [2087 octets] ##########

  • Please re-run AdwCleaner
  • Click on Delete button.
  • Confirm each time with OK if asked.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart. Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.

Note: You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

Then……

Lets check your computers security before you go and we have a little cleanup to do also:

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
  • Please Post the contents of that document.

Hello again

I ran the AdwCleaner and deleted those items (log S1 follows), then ran the SecurityCheck program (log below).

Adobe Reader 10.1.4 Adobe Reader out of Date! <—-check for an update if available

You have out dated programs on the system which are vulnerable to malware.
Please update or uninstall them
Info on doing that can be found in my Preventive Maintenance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A little clean up to do….
Please Uninstall ComboFix: (if you used it)
Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"
Copy and paste next command in the field:
ComboFix /uninstall
Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
[external image: Posted Image]
Then hit enter.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point
(If that doesn't work…..you can simply rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click it to complete the uninstall)
———————————
Please download OTL from one of the links below: (you may already have OTL on the system)
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.com
http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/OTL.exe
Save it to your desktop.
Run OTL and hit the CleanUp button. (This will cleanup the tools and logs used including itself)
Any other programs or logs you can manually delete.
IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, C:\FRST, MBAR, etc….AdwCleaner > just run the program and click uninstall.
——————————-
Any questions…please post back.
Take a look at My Preventive Maintenance to avoid being infected again.
Good Luck and Thanks for using the forum, MrC
