Hi, I would like to post a Hijack This log for you to look at but under your pinned post you only mention Vista and 7. I have XP. Are there instructions for XP somewhere that I'm missing? Thanks
Thank you for responding. My problem is that my computer is running slow. When I check the CPU usage it is in the 70% - 100% range most of the time. A couple of things that I have noticed is mcshield.exe runs in the background and I think it is MaAfee scanning. I added McAfee about 6 weeks ago. There is also a WD???? file that is Western Digital and that is for a MyPassport external hard drive used for backup. The idea with this one, I think, is for me to have the external drive connected to the PC at all times and it scans and performs constant backups. I have noticed that at times these 2 files are consuming a lot of resources. I am not wild about the WD backup software and may remove it and use something else for backup. I'm not all tht wild about McAfee either for that matter.

I have an HP Pavilion a1330n with 2.17 GHz running XP Media Center Edition with SP3 and I have 2 GB of ram.

I have run scans with McAfee, Spybot , and Malwarebytes. I think I'd like to know that the 2 items I've mentioned are the problem and not something else if you can help me.

The log is attached, let me know if you need anything else.

OK, not much in that log, so please do this:

Go to the link below and about half way down are instuctions on running DDS and posting the 2 reports:
http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?showtopic=106388

Do that and also run a scan with RogueKiller: (post the log)

Please remove any usb or external drives from the computer before you run this scan!

Please download and run RogueKiller to your desktop.

Quit all running programs.

For Windows XP, double-click to start.
For Vista or Windows 7, do a right-click on the program, select Run as Administrator to start, & when prompted Allow to run.

Click Scan to scan the system.
When the scan completes > Close out the program > Don't Fix anything!

Don't run any other options, they're not all bad!!!!!!!

Post back the report which should be located on your desktop.

MrC
OK, I have several problems. 1. I have created a zip file after running DDS but I can't figure out how to attach it. Can you tell me please? 2. I ran the RogueKiller but during the scan I keep getting the Windows Explorer box that says it has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. Have you seen that before?
Hopefully, the zip is attached. If it is it will be there twice because I wasn't sure if it attached the first time. No RogueKiller log because it kept shutting down on me.

Looks like it might have worked. I wasn't sure how to do it originally because it said upload rather than attach which is what you usually see.

Not much showing…lets run some scans >>>

Please create a new system restore point before running Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit if you can.

MBAR tutorial

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE
  • Unzip the contents to a folder in a convenient location.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
  • Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
  • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder….. mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt

Please download and run ComboFix.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here.

Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.

Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

———->NOTE<———-

If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix….please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed.

I followed the instructions and ran the scan but it did not produce the log. I am currently searching my computer looking for the txt file but it's been running for a while and hasn't found anything. I don't think it's going to. What is the next step from here?
