Hi. I fairly recently received help here for an infection. My computer is running abnormally slow and I'm getting some redirects. Wondering if I might be infected again. Thanks for your help. Here is my hijack this log.

Hello wilma1313,

My name is OCD. I would be more than happy to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems you might have. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and know that I am working hard to get you a clean and functional system back in your hands. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advice, this will be a team effort. This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible. Please bear with me, I will post back to you as soon as I can.
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete, download or install anything unless instructed to do so.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision. Doing so could make your system inoperable and could require a full reinstall of your Operating System and losing all your programs and data.

Important Note for Vista and Windows 7 users:

These tools MUST be run from the executable.(.exe) every time you run them with Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Please stay with this topic until I let you know that your system appears to be "All Clear"
Hello wilma1313,

  • Please run HijackThis.
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
  • Place a check mark beside the following item:

    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.trymedia.com (HKLM)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the Fix Checked button.
  • Close the HijackThis window.
Next

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Under Custom Scan paste this in

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    services.exe
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /rp /s
    %systemdrive%\$Recycle.Bin|@;true;true;true
    %USERPROFILE%\..|smtmp;true;true;true /FP
    %temp%\smtmp\*.* /s >
    BASESERVICES
    DRIVES
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
  • You may need two posts to fit them both in.
Next

  • Please download aswMBR.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click aswMBR.exe to start the tool.
  • When asked if you want to download Avast's virus definitions please select Yes.
  • Click Scan

  • Upon completion of the scan, click Save log and save it to your desktop, and post that log in your next reply for review. Note - do NOT attempt any Fix yet.
  • You will also notice another file created on the desktop named MBR.dat. Right click that file and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) file. Attach that zipped file in your next reply as well.

In your next post please provide the following:
  • OTL.txt
  • Extras.txt
  • aswMBR report
"Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the Fix Checked button. " (quote from your instructions" What are you referring to with "delete them" what is them?

(quote from your instructions"

What are you referring to with "delete them" what is them?

wilma1313,

My mistake, I should have clarified my statement. ;)

I want you to remove the one (1) 015 Trusted Zone entry with HiJackThis.

  • Please run HijackThis.
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
  • Place a check mark beside the following item:

    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.trymedia.com (HKLM)

  • Now with the item selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete it by clicking the Fix Checked button.
  • Close the HijackThis window.

Please continue with the remainder of the steps and post the results requested.

Please continue with the remainder of the steps and post the logs in your next reply.
It took a couple tries to run ESET but when I disabled mcaffee it worked. ESET did not offer me the option to save or make a log file and I can't find it tucked away on the computer anywhere. It did say it was clean. Computer was still acting up last night. Just finished the scans, haven't had time to determine if itts good or bad now. What have you found in the work we have done so far?

Hi wilma1313,

Computer was still acting up last night.

Can you explain in more detail, what exactly it was doing?

What have you found in the work we have done so far?

Some of the sluggishness you are experiencing might be due to the following:
  • McAfee is known to be somewhat of a resource hog. Changing to a different Anti Virus might improve your performance. But please DO NOT make any changes until after we have finished. I will give you a few FREE Anti Virus recommendations when we are finished.
  • You are running numerous external devices via the USB ports on your computer:
    • Generic- Compact Flash USB Device
    • Generic- SM/xD-Picture USB Device
    • Generic- SD/MMC USB Device
    • Generic- MS/MS-Pro USB Device
    • HP Photosmart C3180 USB Device
  • Unfortunately, running Windows XP with limited resources (2 GIG of RAM). Today's programs can be quite a strain on your resources. Perhaps adding additional RAM might help improve your performance as well. But once again, please do not make any changes to your system until we have finished.

Run OTL.exe
  • Copy/paste the following text written inside of the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL

    :OTL
    O3 - HKCU\..\Toolbar\ShellBrowser: (no name) - {C4069E3A-68F1-403E-B40E-20066696354B} - No CLSID value found

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [createrestorepoint]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • Then post a new OTL log ( don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time )
In your next post please provide the following:
  • How was the computer "acting up"?
  • OTL.txt
  • Any other issues?
Good morning OCD. Yeah funny acting is a poor description. It was just sluggish and freezing at times. I've had this computer for a long time and am used to the normal slowness, but it had slowed way down from the normal and I hadn't added anything to the heavy load already on it. I keep this one for surfing - it has been thru many many infections and always comes back. At any rate its not "acting up" anymore and is "speedy" again, such as it is. Mcafee is off all my computers as of Feb 15 - I cancelled my subscription - I am tired of paying them to miss infections and then fixing infections with free programs - I would much rather donate to useful free programs than continue paying them. I will take any suggestions for free virus and firewall protection. Also I just bought an Ipad - do the same programs work on it as well? Here is the log: All processes killed ========== OTL ========== Registry value HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\ShellBrowser\\{C4069E3A-68F1-403E-B40E-20066696354B} deleted successfully. Hi wilma1313,

Also I just bought an Ipad - do the same programs work on it as well?

iPad is an Apple product and runs a different operating system that your Windows based computer. The current OS for the iPad is iOS 6.x. Apple products are generally less vulnerable to infection due to the fact that there are more Windows based systems in use. Malware is generally written to target the largest audience, and thus creating the greatest amount of havoc. So in short, no the software suggestions I will give you will not be compatible with your new iPad.

"Software works differently on the iPad compared to desktop or laptop computers. Instead of installing software from discs or downloading it from a software developer's site on the Internet, all software for the iPad comes from the App Store except the basic operating system. You download the OS through iTunes on your computer. This is also how you receive operating system updates and back-up your App Store purchases in case you need to reload them after accidental deletion or other problems."

  • Re-run OTL (it should be located on your desktop).
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Uncheck the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt.
Note:The log can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of the file, and post it with your next reply.
In your next post please provide the following:
  • OTL.txt
  • Any remaining issues?
