I had trouble with a screen popping up saying that the software 'ActivityMonitor' for the hardware installation has not passed Windows logo testing and to continue might make it unstable. (I was not and had not loaded any new hardware or software recently) The options were to continue with the installation or STOP installation. I pressed stop and then AVG stopped running. This happened every time AVG tried to update. I ran a full scan and a full Malwarebytes scan and they were both clear. I spoke with AVG techs and they got me to remove and reinstall AVG free 2013. In the process of reinstallation, the box popped up again and I figured it was part of the program after all and pressed continue installation. Another screen popped up saying the same thing but for a PUPs program. Again I pressed continue. AVG reinstalled fine and asked to run a full scan. The results showed up 17 IRP Hooks in Windows System 32 Driver files that could not be removed because they are essential! I started the PC in safemode, ran rkill.exe and then Malwarebytes fullscan and nothing showed up. I ran aswMBR and it shows 2 suspiscious files. aswMBR version 0.9.9.1707 Copyright© 2011 AVAST Software Run date: 2013-01-14 22:09:36 —————————– 22:09:36.156 OS Version: Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 22:09:36.156 Number of processors: 1 586 0x209 22:09:36.156 ComputerName: MOSS UserName: 22:09:37.406 Initialize success 22:10:08.031 Disk 0 (boot) \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 -> \Device\Ide\IdeDeviceP0T0L0-3 22:10:08.031 Disk 0 Vendor: ST380011A 8.16 Size: 76293MB BusType: 3 22:10:08.062 Disk 0 MBR read successfully 22:10:08.062 Disk 0 MBR scan 22:10:08.078 Disk 0 Windows XP default MBR code 22:10:08.093 Disk 0 Partition 1 00 DE Dell Utility Dell 4.1 47 MB offset 63 22:10:08.093 Disk 0 Partition 2 80 (A) 07 HPFS/NTFS NTFS 76238 MB offset 96390 22:10:08.109 Disk 0 scanning sectors +156232125 22:10:08.187 Disk 0 scanning C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers 22:10:22.171 Service scanning 22:10:55.906 Modules scanning 22:11:04.453 Module: C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\dxgthk.sys **SUSPICIOUS** 22:11:05.296 Module: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll **SUSPICIOUS** 22:11:05.328 Disk 0 trace - called modules: 22:11:06.250 ntoskrnl.exe CLASSPNP.SYS disk.sys atapi.sys hal.dll pciide.sys PCIIDEX.SYS 22:11:06.281 1 nt!IofCallDriver -> \Device\Harddisk0\DR0[0x8a68aab8] 22:11:06.328 3 CLASSPNP.SYS[f7637fd7] -> nt!IofCallDriver -> \Device\Ide\IdeDeviceP0T0L0-3[0x8a6ddd98] 22:11:06.359 Scan finished successfully 22:12:21.453 Disk 0 MBR has been saved successfully to "C:\Documents and Settings\Katrina Moss\My Documents\MBR.dat" 22:12:21.468 The log file has been saved successfully to "C:\Documents and Settings\Katrina Moss\My Documents\aswMBR.txt" I'm not sure where to go from here. Hi and Welcome!! :) My name is Jeff. I would be more than happy to take a look at your malware results logs and help you with solving any malware problems you might have. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and know that I am working hard to get you a clean and functional system back in your hands. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.
DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.
Doing so could make your system inoperable and could require a full reinstall of your OS losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
These tools MUST be run from the executable (.exe) every time you run them
with Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

:)

Please read through these instructions to familarize yourself with what to expect when this tool runs

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
4. If you get a message saying "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion", please restart your computer.

Hi,

ComboFix
  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the box below:

    ClearJavaCache::

    DDS::
    Trusted Zone: avg.com\free
    Trusted Zone: o2.co.uk\*.broadband
    Trusted Zone: plaxo.com\www

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\hwkpw.dll

    Registry::
    [HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
    "3631:TCP"=-

    NetSvc::
    zvjdgkg

    Driver::
    zvjdgkg

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix may request an update; please allow it.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Hi,

We are looking better.

Could you run Windows Update, download and install all updates available?
——-

[external image: Posted Image] Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

I had trouble downloading this tool from bleepingcomputer.com, but I think it was to do with settings on Firefox possibly. Got there in the end and ran it. Report attached. As a matter of interest, I seem to have an update failure on AVG now, which is what was triggering the unwanted messages in the first place. If I try to update, it says General Error. I'm fairly certain all of this started with AVG somehow. Should I remove it?

Attachments:

I would go ahead and uninstall AVG. I am not a fan of it to begin with. Before we finish up I will get you some good free antivirus choices you can select from.

If you choose to remove AVG, it is removed is by downloading the AVG Remover Tool found here. Once the tool is downloaded, double-click (for XP) or right-click and Run as Administrator (Vista) the icon for this tool and follow the prompts to completely remove AVG.

Then attempt to run Windows Update again…install any updates available. Let me know when this is complete.
I've removed AVG now and have run Windows Updates again. Both times I ran it, there were no additional updates and automatic update is set.
Please delete the current version of Combofix.exe from your desktop and download a new version from here to your desktop.

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications.

Double-click on the Combofix.exe and follow the prombts on your display. When finish, it will create a C:\Combofix.txt. Please post this log for further review.
