Symptoms:
Two days ago my laptop started having trouble booting. Will start but nothing happens, blank screen, no bios screen or anything. Force shutdown and restart, usually boots after the 3rd or 4th time. Now I can't update Windows, set my clock, the security certificate for virtually every website I try to go to is no good, the first couple of times I ran Hijack This it would hang and tell me it was being denied access but I couldn't tell to which file. I don't know what else is going on.

Hello again cklenertz.

My name is Satchfan and I would be glad to help you with your computer problem.

The last time I helped you, you didn’t reply. We all do this on a voluntary basis and most of us also have day jobs and families, so please be gracious enough to reply even if it is only to say that you no longer require help. Thanks

Please read the following guidelines which will help to make cleaning your machine easier:
  • please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear
  • all logs/reports, etc. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In Notepad click Format, uncheck Word wrap if it is checked
  • if you don't understand something, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification before proceeding
  • the fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • please reply within 3 days. If you do not reply within this period I will post a reminder but topics with no reply in 4 days will be closed!
IMPORTANT:

Please DO NOT install/uninstall any programs unless asked to.
Please DO NOT run any scans other than those requested

===================================================

Run RogueKiller

IMPORTANT: Do not reboot your computer if at all possible otherwise the malware will reactivate and you will have to run RogueKiller again

Download RogueKiller to your desktop.
  • close all running programs
  • for Windows Vista/Seven, right click -> run as administrator, for XP simply double-click on RogueKiller.exe
  • when the prescan is finished, click on Scan
  • the report has been created on the desktop, (or you can click on Report)
  • copy/paste the content in your next post
  • NOTE: DO NOT attempt to remove anything that the scan detects.
If the program is blocked, continue to try it several times. If it still doesn’t work, (it could happen), rename it to winlogon.exe.

Please post the contents of the RKreport.txt in your next reply.

===================================================

Run DDS

Please download DDS by sUBs from the following link and save it to your desktop

DDS.pif

.
  • disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • when done, DDS.txt will open.
  • after a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • save both reports to your desktop.
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt reports in your next reply
===================================================

Run aswMBR
  • download aswMBR.exe to your desktop.
  • double click aswMBR.exe to run it
  • if asked, accept the AVAST virus definition download
  • click the "Scan" button to start scan
  • on completion of the scan click Save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply. Note - do NOT attempt any Fix yet.
Please include the following in your next post :

RKreport.txt
DDS.txt
Attach.txt
aswMBR log

Thanks

Hey Satchfan, You're right. Thanks for taking me on again this time. I noticed when I signed in this time, as well, that you wished me luck in reaching my educational goals but I didn't get the message. I appreciate that. I'm still in school but I have no travel plans in the near future so other than Friday, I'll be able to logon at least once per day. Okay, I have attached the logs you requested. Circumstances suck for me but I'm looking forward to working with you.
Hi

I'm still in school but I have no travel plans in the near future so other than Friday, I'll be able to logon at least once per day.

You have iLivid installed, (I suggest you uninstall it), plus some registry cleaners/optimisers, (which is NOT recommended) but apart from that I see no malware.

The error messages about website certificates are down to the clock settings being wrong.

There is an error message regarding you hard drive on the date things started to go wrong so I think you should check this before we continue.

Check for hard drive errors
  • open Windows Explorer, (Windows key+E).
  • right-click on the letter of you main hard drive and then click Properties
  • click the “Tools” tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check now. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation
  • to check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
  • click Start
Depending on the size of your drive, this might take several minutes. For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it is checking for errors.

Let me know how that goes.

Can you also tell me exactly what happens when you try to reset the clock.

Thanks

Satchfan
Hey Satchfan, I removed ilivid. Ran the Error checking utility and it went well. :woot: Don't know if there were any errors, I had to restart and it did it before it did POST. It took so long I fell asleep. When it was done it restarted and I don't know what the result was. Was able to reset the clock. All seems well. Any idea what the problem was? I never used iLivid, not even sure why or how it was downloaded. Thanks, Kevin
Hi Kevin

Any idea what the problem was?

In a word, no but the repair seemed to do the trick. :)

I never used iLivid, not even sure why or how it was downloaded.

It is usually downloaded with something else.

Always look carefully when installing something new as you sometimes have to remove a checkmark to prevent other toolbars, browser helper objects or additional programs being installed as well..

We’ll run a couple of clean-up programs which will make sure none of iLivid’s friends are lurking: if they are OK an online scan should finish the check that your computer is OK.

Download and run AdwCleaner

Download AdwCleaner from here and save it to your desktop.
  • run AdwCleaner and select Delete
  • when it has finished it will ask to reboot - allow the reboot
  • on reboot a log will be produced; please attach the content of the log to your next reply
===================================================

Download Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware

  • double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • at the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish..
  • if an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • when the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • when removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • the log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
NOTE: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Logs to include with the next post:

Thanks

Satchfan
Here you go Satchfan. MBAM indicated no malicious items were found. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.65.1.1000 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: v2012.11.16.11 Windows 7 Service Pack 1 x86 NTFS Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421 Kevin :: KEVIN-LAPTOP [administrator] 11/17/2012 2:09:24 AM mbam-log-2012-11-17 (02-09-24).txt Scan type: Full scan (C:\|D:\|) Scan options enabled: Memory | Startup | Registry | File System | Heuristics/Extra | Heuristics/Shuriken | PUP | PUM Scan options disabled: P2P Objects scanned: 48503 Time elapsed: 2 minute(s), 16 second(s) [aborted] Memory Processes Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Folders Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Files Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) (end)
All looking good.

One more scan and we can probably say we are OK to tidy up because you are OK.

Run ESET Online Scan

IMPORTANT Please make sure you uncheck the box next to Remove found threats. Eset will detect anything that looks even slightly suspicious, which could include legitimate program files. If you do not uncheck the box, Eset will automatically remove all suspicious files which could leave some of your software inoperable.

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.

ESET OnlineScan 1. Click the Eset online Scanner button.
2. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

• Click on esetinstaller.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
• Double click on the Eset installer icon on your desktop.

3. Check Yes, I accept the Terms of Use
4. Click the Start button.
5. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
6. Check Scan archives
7. Push the Start button.
8. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
9. When the scan completes, push List of found threats
10. Push Export to Text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
Note - if ESET doesn't find any threats, no report will be created.
11. Push the back button.
12. Push Finish
If a log has been produced post it in your next reply.
Hi Kevin

I would say your computer is fine.

We’ll get rid of the few things that Eset picked up and then tidy up.

First:

Show hidden Files and Folders
  • open Windows Explorer, (Windows key+E)
  • at the top, click on Organise, >Folder and search options
  • click on the “View” tab
  • under “Files and Folders”, place a check in Show hidden files, folders and drives
Next

Still in Windows explorer, navigate to and delete the following folders/files in red:

C:\Users\Kevin\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0
C:\Users\Kevin\Downloads\AdvancedPCTweaker.exe

Update and run Malwarebytes. This really is an excellent program that you should also update and run on a regular basis, probably weekly.

MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

You know, it looks like it may be a hardware issue. I tried to boot up again this morning and it took a couple of tries. When I hit the button the screen is just blank. No splashpage or anything. After forcing it to restart a couple of times it finally booted up but the clock reset again. I changed the clock back and everything is fine. I'm guessing I should look into purchasing a new laptop. Hi Kevin

Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it

You are welcome.

Your problem may only be the hard drive which is easy to replace yourself in a laptop, (and a kot cheaper than a new laptop).

It is probably worth starting a topic in our Windows forum here.. The experts there may be able to shed more light on it.

Good luck
