Okay, I am still getting redirected, but I've noticed a pattern. It seems that if I open up a new Firefox window and do a Google search using the navigation toolbar, then one of the first two links listed redirects me. If I search from Google.com, I don't have a problem. If I get redirected once in a particular Firefox window I have open, I never get redirected again in that window.

When I first posted on the forum, I was getting redirected on at least 30% of the Google links I clicked, so there's definitely been some improvement.

I hope this helps.
Hi arkm,

Thank you for the information. We still have a file lingering. Let's try and remove that and see if it improves the performance of the computer.

= = = = = = = = = =

Show Hidden Files & Folders in Windows 7
  • To show hidden files, just click on the Organize button in any folder, and then select “Folder and Search Options” from the menu.
  • Click the View tab, and then you should select “Show hidden files and folders” in the list.
  • Then click OK.
Next

Reboot in Safe Mode using the F8 Method:
  • Restart your computer.
  • When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information start to gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows 7 Advanced Boot Options.
  • Select the Safe Mode option using the arrow keys.
  • Then press the enter key on your keyboard to boot into Windows 7 Safe Mode.
  • When Windows starts you will be at a typical logon screen. Logon to your computer and Windows 7 will enter Safe mode.
Next

Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following file, and DELETE it (if still present):
  • c:\windows\System32\sysprep\CRYPTSP.dll_ <– delete the file only
Exit Explorer

Next

Reboot back into Normal Mode

In your next post please provide the following:
  • Results from the above steps.
  • How's the computer running?
I did not find the file in the sysprep folder. There was a C:\windows\system32\cryptsp.dll but I did not delete it. I'm still being redirected by Google links.
Hi OCD, I can't really recreate the problem elsewhere because this only happens when I do a Google search using the quick search bar which comes standard in Firefox (next to the URL text box). There don't seem to be similar quick search bars in Chrome or IE, and I don't seem to get redirected under any circumstances in these other browsers. If, in Firefox I change the quick search to "AVG Secure Search", which still searches through Google, I don't seem to have the redirect issue. At this point, the redirect is hardly even a minor inconvenience, but I worry that it's a symptom of a deeper problem. Thanks for staying with me!
Hi arkm,

Thank you for the detailed description of the issue. :D

AVG Secure Search : AVG Secure Search is considered foist-ware/adware and it is not a necessary feature of the AVG Anti-Virus software. We removed most of it in earlier steps, please follow the steps below to remove it from your Firefox browser.
  • To remove AVG Secure Search from your Firefox "quick search" options:
  • Click the drop down menu in the "quick search" box.
  • Select Manage Search Engines
  • Locate AVG Secure Search, click Remove
Next

Clear Java Cache
  • Start button, select Control Panel.
  • In the Control Panel, open the Java Control Panel.
  • Click on Settings button under Temporary Internet Files.
  • Click Delete Files button at the Temporary Files Settings window.
  • Click on OK button at confirmation dialog.
  • Exit the Control Panel.
Next

Reset Firefox to its default state
  • At the top of the Firefox window, click the Firefox button, go over to the Help sub-menu
(on Windows XP, click the Help menu at the top of the Firefox window) and select Troubleshooting Information.
    [external image: Posted Image]

  • Click the Reset Firefox button in the upper-right corner of the Troubleshooting Information page.
    [external image: Posted Image]

  • To continue, click Reset Firefox in the confirmation window that opens.
  • Firefox will close and be reset. When it's done, a window will list the information that was imported. Click Finish and Firefox will open.
In your next post please provide the following:
  • How is the computer running now, and remaining issues?
Hi arkm,

Re-run OTL (it should be located on your desktop).

Windows Vista and Windows 7 users Right Click and select "Run as Administrator" on the icon to run it.
  • Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Uncheck the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt. (No Extras.txt will be produced)
Note:The log can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of the file, and post it with your next reply.
In your next post please provide the following:
  • OTL.txt
  • Any remaining issues?
Everything's fine as far as I can tell.

Your log shows you don't seem to have a Firewall Installed. I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over.

Please choose either to enable your Windows 7 Firewall by following these steps:
  • Open Windows Firewall by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, in the search box, type firewall, and then clicking Windows Firewall.
  • Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  • Click On (recommended), and then click OK.
OR

If you would care to choose from a few free firewalls there are some, with the links, below. Just choose one:
With the above items taken care of let's move on to the All Clean part of the process.

This infection appears to have been cleaned, but I can not give you any absolute guarantees. As a precaution, I would go ahead and change all of your passwords as this is especially important after an infection.

Any of the logs that you created for use in the forums or remaining tools that have not yet been removed can be deleted so they aren't cluttering up your desktop.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Make your Mozilla Firefox more secure - This can be done by adding these add-ons:
Use and update an anti-virus software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to use and update your anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current. Windows XP users can visit Windows update regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Windows Vista/7 users can open the Start menu > All Programs > Windows Update > Check for Updates (in left hand task pane) to update these systems. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers. For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

WOT (Web of Trust) As "Googling" is such an integral part of internet life, this free browser add on warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. It is especially helpful when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites. WOT has an add-on available for Firefox, Internet Explorer as well as Google Chrome.

Finally, I strongly recommend that you read TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please reply to this thread once more if you are satisfied so that we can mark the problem as resolved.
Thanks so much for all your help. One last thing: My firewall has been up this whole time (at least that's what Windows tells me). When I checked it, it said it was activated, so I don't know if there's any other funny business going on.
