Need help with Sirefef.DA [Closed]

I got a laptop that I'd like to pass to my parents. I figured out that no antivirus was installed (o_O), and installed ESET Smart Security, but its services are prevented from starting. After some workaround I was able to run it, and it reported that memory is infected with Win32/Sirefef.DA, but ESET cannot clear it.

Could you please help me to get rid of it?
Thank you very much!

Hello Alexey Guryanov and welcome to the WTT forum.

My name is Satchfan and I would be glad to help you with your computer problem.

I see that Conspire offered to help you recently but you did not reply.

We are very busy here and I would be grateful if you would be courteous enough to let me know if you are going to be away for any length of time or are unable to respond.

Please read the following guidelines which will help to make cleaning your machine easier:
  • please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear
  • all logs/reports, etc. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In Notepad click Format, uncheck Word wrap if it is checked
  • if you don't understand something, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification before proceeding
  • the fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • please reply within 3 days. If you do not reply within this period I will post a reminder but topics with no reply in 4 days will be closed!
IMPORTANT:

Please DO NOT install/uninstall any programs unless asked to.
Please DO NOT run any scans other than those requested

======================================================

Please run these in the order requested.

Run TDSSKiller

Please download TDSSKiller.zip
  • extract it to your desktop
  • double click TDSSKiller.exe
  • press Start Scan
    • only if Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected. Do not change it to Delete or Quarantine as it may delete infected files that are required for Windows to operate properly.
    • then click Continue > Reboot now
  • copy and paste the log in your next reply
    • A copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root of the drive (typically C:\) called TDSSKiller_*** (*** denotes version & date)
======================================================

Download and run ComboFix

Download ComboFix from the following location:

Link

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • see this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • remember to re-enable them when we're done.
  • double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • as part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

    **Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue its malware removal procedures.

    🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image)

    Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image)

    Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
Note: Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

When finished, it will produce a log. Please include the ComboFix.txt in your next reply. It can be found at C:\ComboFix.txt

Please also remember to include the TDSSKiller log

Thanks

Satchfan
Thank you much for your help! I'm not sure should I attach logs or insert them into reply. This time I will attache them as they seem to be pretty big, please let me know if it's intended way to do it. One thing: I cannot open ESET GUI because of "cannot communicate with a core" error, ESET service is not started either, but ComboFix gave me an alert that ESET smart security is still running. I couldn't figure out how to switch it off. ComboFix finished working without errors though (two reboots were performed as a part of it's work).
A few questions:

You have an awful lot of open ports: is this something you are aware of or something to do with open desktop?

============

Did you set this proxy server yourself?:

ternet Settings,ProxyServer = proxy-server.hpw.pri.bms.com:8080

============

Open ComboFix

Please do the following:
  • close any open browsers.
  • close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so that they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:
File::
c:\program files\Install_ICQ6.exe
c:\program files\1ClickNew.msi

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

[external image: Posted Image]

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it produces a log at C:\ComboFix.txt. Post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

================================

Download Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware

Click here
  • double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • at the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish..
  • if an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • when the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • when removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • the log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
NOTE: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Can you tell me if there are any remaining problems

Satchfan

Hi again

Can you tell me if you intentionally installed R for Windows. If so, when did you install it?

Yes, it was intentionally. But it's not needed for the purposes this computer will be used for, so I can uninstall it.
- R was installed several years ago I guess
- I'm not aware of what ports are open. I got this computer from other person, and didn't check it extensively as it was obviously infected, and I couldn't fix it. I guess i need to go over it after computer is clean
- Most likely this proxy was configured deliberately. The person I got a laptop from visits pharma companies which BMS is one of. I don't need this proxy

I still couldn't switch off ESET smart protections, but it still didn't cause any error messages from tools you told ne to run

Just a comment:
- first time I ran ComboFix it gave an alert that RootKit is detected. And there was the same alert during second run from which the log above came.

I rebooted computer (mbam did'n require it), and checked if ESET is working. It doesn't seem to start (there is no splash scree and icon in tray), windows service is not started, and there is no ESET group in program files.

Thank you very much for your help!
Let’s try a different approach.

Run RogueKiller

IMPORTANT: Do not reboot your computer if at all possible otherwise the malware will reactivate and you will have to run RogueKiller again

Download RogueKiller to your desktop.
  • close all running programs
  • for Windows Vista/Seven, right click -> run as administrator, for XP simply double-click on RogueKiller.exe
  • when the prescan is finished, click on Scan
  • click on Report and copy/paste the content in your next post
  • NOTE: DO NOT attempt to remove anything that the scan detects.
If the program is blocked, continue to try it several times. If it still doesn’t work, (it could happen), rename it to winlogon.exe.

Please post the contents of the RKreport.txt in your next reply.

===============================================

  • Please download MGADiag by clicking here and save it to your desktop.
  • double click the [external image: Posted Image] icon on your desktop.
  • push [external image: Posted Image]
  • push [external image: Posted Image]
  • go to Start -> Run and type in "Notepad"
  • go to Edit -> Paste in notepad.
  • "x" out all of the numbers and letters in the line beginning with "Windows Product Key:"
  • Copy and paste that log here.
Please post back with both logs

Hi Alexey Guryanov It has been a couple of days since I replied with instructions to help diagnose your computer problems. Please let me know if you are having problems and still need help. Thanks Satchfan
Dear Satchfan,

Sorry for the delay.

I don't reboot computer, and waiting for further instructions.

Thank you much for your help!
Run RogueKiller

IMPORTANT: Do not reboot your computer if at all possible otherwise the malware will reactivate and you will have to run RogueKiller again
  • close all programs
  • double-click RogueKiller.exe - Windows 7: right-click the program and select Run as Administrator'
  • after it has completed it's prescan click on the “Registry” tab
  • make sure the entries there are checked, then click on Delete
  • once again in the RogueKiller console, click the “Hosts” tab
  • make sure the entries there are checked if there is an option to do so
  • press the HostFix button.
You should have 2 RogueKiller RKreports to post:

1. Mode: Delete
2. Mode: HostFix

Satchfan
After prescan all tabs including Registry and Hosts are empty, so there was nothing to delete or to fix. After scan there are two items in Registry tab, and one (127.0.0.1 localhost) in Hosts tab. Should I perform "delete" for Registry after scan?
