I copied the combofix to a flash drive and opened the file in safe mode with command prompt. I was able to run the combofix.exe program ( I had to run it twice) and this has removed the malware. I am now in the process of dealing with some other issues to update my computer. Unfortunately I ran a number of scans, cleaners etc. that apparently removed many of the previous updates. This was before your instructions not to run these "fixes". I am now receiving application errors: msfeedssync.exe
Instruction at "0x77d4bbcd" referenced memory at "0x00000048" could not be read.

I am attaching the combofix log:

Hi rdor,

Can you now boot to normal Windows?

That error is most likely from internet explorer. You have a very old version, IE6, installed. You will only be able to update to IE7 until you install SP3 which we will do after the machine is clean.

You have this program installed, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM). Please update it and run a scan.

Open MBAM

  • Click the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • The program will close to update and reopen.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.
Yes I am able to boot in Windows normally now, I performed 132 updates from the Windows Update Site (the reason that I was running IE 6 is prior to finding this forum I had used my reinstallation CD from the original purchase of the computer, which is quite dated at this point). I ran Malware Bytes with updates, and removed all items. I have also updated to IE 8, I am running Service Pack 3. Every thing seems to be running fairly smoothly except that I am unable to install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update. Every time I try I go through the initializing, installing etc. sequence but at the end there is a pop up Automatic Updates: Some updates could not be installed. The following updates were not installed> .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 etc.
Hi rdor,

That update can be a pain. Is that the only update that you are having problems with?

I had the same problem. You can live without it. You should already have versions 1 - 3 installed.

You can also go to
  • click the start button
  • right click My Computer
  • click Automatic Updates
  • click the link near the bottom to go to Windows Updates web site
Once the page has loaded click Review update date history. Any failed updates showing?

If there aren't any failed updates the next time it's offered click custom install, uncheck the update and click close. You will be presented with an option not to be notified about the update again. Check the the box and click ok.

Please continue with the MBAM scan.
If it is not vital or even that important I am more than happy to forego this final update, so I will remove it from the automatic updates. I do have 1 -3 installed. I guess I am good to go. Thank you very much for all of your assistance you have been extremely helpful in resolving my issues as well as very patient. Thank you again.
Hi rador, You logs look ok but without a couple of extra scans I can't tell if anything is left behind. Please run the MBAM scan as requested earlier. Thanks
