I took advantage of a lovely summer's evening and went out for a walk yesterday. I left home at three o'clock and walked along a level road, up a hill, back down the hill, and home , without stopping. I got back at nine o'clock. My pace on the flat was four miles per hour, uphill was three miles per hour, and a speedy six miles per hour downhill. How far did I walk and, to within half an hour, what time did I reached the top of the hill?
24 miles. 6 miles out on flat took 1 1/2 hrs at 4mph 6 miles up hill took 2 hrs at 3mph 6 miles back down took 1 hr at 6mph 6 miles home on flat took 1 1/2 hrs at 4mph. total the 6 hrs you were out walking. got to top of hill at 6.30. one of your questions where there's more than a single answer. :D eg. 24 miles 10 miles out on flat at 4 mph took 2 1/2 hrs 2 miles up hill at 3 mph took 40 minutes. 2 miles back down at 6 mph took 20 minutes. 10 miles back home at 4 mph took 2 1/2 hrs. total time 6 hrs walking. got to top of hill at 10 past 6 so to nearest 1/2 hr that would be 6 o'clock.

one of your questions where there's more than a single answer. :D

The criteria says "to within half an hour", not to the nearest half hour. There are two solutions… but both give the same (within half an hour) answer. :P

Well done terry1966!

How about some Oatmeal-Raisin cookies:

thanks.. curious which answer did you have? :D and i can come up with at least another answer where you got to the top of the hill at 6.50  walk 2 miles takes 1/2 hr up 10 miles hill takes 3hrs 20 minutes walk 10 miles down hill takes 1hr 40 minutes walk 2 miles home takes 1/2 hr.
6:30 was what I was "looking for", but knew there were other results… all within 30 minutes of 6:30. Thus the "within 30 minutes" criteria.
