Google Redirect, Random Audio Advertisements & more fun [Solved]

I haven't downloaded any new programs recently, so this is likely something that I've picked up on a website. Google search results are re-directing to random links and random audio advertisements are playing, even when the browswer is closed. I have microsoft security essentials. It has yet to detect anything wrong with my PC, so I downloaded and installed AVAST. Avast does not detect anything on scan, but while running, it does prompt alerts for blocking harmful sites (even when IExplorer is not running or attempting to visit a site). I left task manager running to see what was playing the audio files. When they play, "about:blank" comes up like IE has started, but there's no IE window open. I've run the OTL to clear temp internet files, but it finds a lot of files every time it runs, so it doesn't seem like these are being cleaned out on reboot.

I thought I'd remove/reinstall IE, but it's not in my program install/uninstall list. :(

Here's the stuff:

Hello and Posted Image

My name is patndoris. I will be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. It will be very helpful if you follow these guidelines:
  • Malware logs are often lengthy and can take a lot of time to research and interpret. Please be patient while I review your logs.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive.
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications or delete anything without being directed to do so.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone. Please stick with me till you're given the "all clear".
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • Please reply within 3 days. If I do not hear back from you in that time frame, I will post a reminder for you. Topics with no reply in 4 days are closed!

It would appear that you have more than one anti-virus solution on your machine. I can see both Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials installed.
Having more than one anti-virus program on your machine, even if only one is running, can cause conflicts and slowdowns in the performance of the machine.
Before continuing on, please completely uninstall one of the programs. Since you said you use Microsoft Security Essentials, please uninstall Avast before we continue on or it will cause problems during our cleaning. Please reboot the machine after doing so if you are not instructed to after the removal.

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. 1. Do not mouse-click anywhere on the screen while it is running. That may cause it to stall. In fact, I suggest you do not do anything else on the computer while Combofix is running as it can cause it to stall. It may appear at times that it isn't doing anything but it is. Just let it run. It may also reboot the machine as a part of what it is doing and that is not unusual. (If your computer requires a login then you WILL need to fill in the login/password for it to continue. If your computer does not have a login then it will continue on it's own..) Then, just sit tight until it finishes. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes, sometimes it takes an hour. Just be patient until the log pops up. If it takes more than an hour and doesn't appear to be doing anything, you can stop it and come back and let me know.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now
Thank you for your help! I really appreciate it. I've removed the Microsoft Security program, since it doesn't catch anything! I disabled the Avast and ran the ComboFix. The ComboxFix runs though all the stages, but there is an error on open event - it doesn't open a log. Is there anything else I can try? As for how the PC runs, it's the same as before. Random Audio ads, connections to urls when no window is open, and redirects on google.

Please read carefully and follow these steps. There is a difference between what you see in one of the images below and what I need you to do.
We are only creating a log - I do NOT want you to "cure" or try to fix anything in this step. It is very important that you don't choose Cure when presented with that option.

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image)

  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure but I want you to choose SKIP instead , click on Continue.

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image)

  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image)

  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image)

  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
TDSSKiller will not run. When I double click the icon, I get a popup that asks if the application can make changes to my PC. I click OK and it shuts down before beginning the install process. I also found a 'fix' version of this program. That one will not run either. It's the same issue.
Boot your computer in Safe Mode
  • Turn the computer on or Restart the computer
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded, start tapping the F8 key.
  • The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu option.
  • Press Enter.
  • The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Log into your usual account

Please try to run TDSSKiller with SKIP (please do not use the fix or cure as we do not yet know what we are dealing with).
  • When you are finished with all troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.

Let me know if you are able to run it this way or not. If not, we will try a different tool.
Thanks so much for your quick replies! I rebooted to safe mode. The TDSSKiller still will not run. I also tried renaming the program to see if that would resolve the issue. It did not.
Download and Run RKill

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (Thanks to Grinler of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 3 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them.
Rkill.exe
Rkill.com
Rkill.scr

Once it is downloaded, right-click and choose Run as Administrator[/] on the rkill.com in order to automatically try to stop any processes associated with rogue programs. Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next steps.

If you get a message rkill is an infection, do not be concerned. The message is just a fake warning by some rogue programs when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it. The trick is to leave the warning on the screen and then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this should allow you to bypass the malware trying to protect itself so that rkill can terminate the rogue processes. Continue to try running Rkill until the malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the next steps.

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

If for some reason the machine reboots, repeat the process. Again, try not to restart the machine.

Once you've gotten RKill to run and before doing anything else, then try running TDSSKiller w/SKIP. What's happening here, is the infection is trying to keep us from running any tools that might keep us from removing it. Hopefully, with RKill we can stop the bad process long enough to get a look at what's going on and then we can determine the best way to handle it.

If you are still unable to run TDSSKiller w/SKIP then please try this:

Download and Run GMER

[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Right-click and choose Run as Administrator on GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that may have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one - make sure it is UNCHECKED)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
I tried each of the rkill applications. After running each, I still couldn't run the TDSSKiller. I downloaded the GMER application and ran that. All boxes are greyed out and un-checkable except for the Services, Registry, Files, C:\, and ADS. Show all can be checked, but I didn't per your instructions. I ran the scan and saved, but the program prompted that no activity was found and the saved log is blank.
I'd like you to run Combofix one more time please. If it prompts you to allow it to update please allow it to do so.

I'd also like you to do the following. The log this produces is very long and it may take more than one post to paste the entire log. That is perfectly OK just break it into a couple of posts if you need to.

Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Restart your computer and tap F8 to bring up the Advanced Menu, then click Repair your computer

Follow the prompt to enter keyboard input method, and then the prompt to enter a password. If the machine does not have a password, simply click Enter.

In the next menu, use the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Command Prompt and press Enter.
  • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
  • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
  • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
  • In the command window type e:\frst.exe and press Enter.
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
  • The tool will start to run.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Place a check next to List Drivers MD5
  • Press Scan button.
When finished, a log (FRST64.txt) will be created on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
I ran combofix with out any issue. It is attached. I d/l and saved the other tool to flash drive. My PC will not boot on repair mode. It gets stuck on 'loading windows files'. I tried multiple times and cannot move beyond on that. I can login on safe mode and safe mode with networking. Is there another option? Thanks so much for all your help and patience with this.
FRST cannot be run in safe mode. Let's try a different tactic to try and get our tools to run since RKill didn't work. What I really want to see is TDSSKiller since I do believe you have a rootkit (and it's reasonably likely that we can fix it if we can figure out what the infected files are.) The reason we need to do the SKIP first is so that we know what files we are dealing with. There are times when repair with TDSSKiller is not the best option and/or if it can't repair it that we need to use another tool, and knowing what files we are targeting is very important. I know this is very frustrating for you trying over and over to get the program to run, and I do appreciate your patience but we really do need to find out what infection we are dealing with so we can properly address it.

Download this tool and save it directly to your desktop

Drag TDSSKiller into Inherit.exe. After you see the message 'OK', try again to carry out the instructions for running tor running TDSSKiller w/SKIP

You have a very persistent little bugger that doesn't seem to want to let us figure out what it is - but we are going to get this solved - I don't give up easily!! :)
I've downloaded the tool you posted and followed the instructions. The TDSSKiller behaves the same way. It prompts as if it will run and then shuts down after I 'Okay". Something else that might be helpful to know is that I cannot delete files. Anything I attempt to delete is simply returned to its original place after I empty the recyle bin. It's simply hidden.
The random audio and ads is not unusual (but how stubborn it's being is a little surprising) but I need to do a little research on this files that reappear but are hidden. Give me a bit to do that please. I'm at work right now so I will be back to you a bit later.
