Windows 7 has an excellent backup utility.

To set up a backup in Windows 7 open up Computer right-click on C: and select Properties. Click on the “Tools” tab and click Back up now I would suggest that you backup on a separate external disk.

If this screws up again on me, I could just go to today's restore point, right

System Restore only restores Windows system files, programs and registry settings.

Should I ever go into cCleaner and clean out the registry?

. No. I personally dislike cCleaner for this reason alone. The registry should be left alone. One of the malware experts, miekiemoes, has an excellent write-up here

Hi - A month or so ago I was on the backup forum with Lee. He had me install Macrium software. They also had me do an "image backup". What is the difference between image backup and a regular backup of your data? This was on 7-29. When I backed it up, I went back to double check that it worked, and it did. But now when I go back to check on it, it says I don't have access to the folder or access is denied. I don't remember if I had to take different steps to get there or what. What would you suggest I do? I have used up half my external drive with backups and things I don't understand. Should I go back and contact Lee? He preferred Macrium reflect to the windows one.

I would ask Lee because my knowledge of things outside malware and MS Office, (what I teach), is limited and I know nothing about Macrium - in fact I had to look it up. I have an external hard drive and save anything important on that, backing things yp regularly. You could also save important files/folders on CD/DVD. Sorry I can't be more help here.

I was told on the forums here to download adobe flash player, what is it and do I need to download it?. I still have some errors on start up to yahoo, but that is for the yahoo people, right? I don’t like any registry cleaners – they can cause a great deal of harm and leave programs unusable.

You really should let programs uninstall themselves properly and unless you are very knowledgeable, leave the registry in peace.

cCleaner can also clean out your temporary files, I believe, but then so can ATF Cleaner, (which is what I use although, I probably shouldn’t because it hasn’t been updated for a while), or TFC, (Temporary File Cleaner). You can try them and see what you think:

• double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe (on your desktop) to run the program.
• under Main choose: Select All
• click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

• click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All

NOTE: The last update came out before Chrome and the developer of ATF Cleaner hasn't updated it to deal with Chrome yet.

Google Chrome includes its own “Clear Browsing Data” tool that performs the same functions as ATF Cleaner. It clears browsing history, download history, empties Chrome’s cache, deletes cookies and removes all saved autofill entries and passwords.

You can toggle each of these options and select the date range of data you want to remove.
You can access the tool by clicking on the wrench menu in Chrome, and choose Tools, Clear Browsing Data.

what do you think is the best antivirus?

Microsoft Security Essentials is what I use as do some of the others in the Malware team. I personally wouldn’t touch Norton and although AVG is good, it's getting a bit bulky and tends to slow things down. Other good free ones are Avast and Avira.

I was told on the forums here to download adobe flash player, what is it and do I need to download it?

You don’t need it, but you should have it if you want to view web sites properly. Many websites have flash animation, and to play those, you will need Flash Player. YouTube, for example also requires Flash.

If you install it, like Java and Adobe Reader, you must regularly update to the latest version and uninstall old versions, which are a vulnerability.

Hi there Don't close this thread yet. I cannot find anyone who knows about yahoo. While we working on everything is when the command bar went black, no matter what my theme was. Can you think of anything we did that might have caused that? Do you know of anywhere I can find yahoo help? I talked to paws and he didn't know.
