Just today I noticed I cannot go to any requested search-topic as long as Google has been selected as the preferred search engine. If I change to Bing, I can readily search for any topic. Help, please. Also, I cannot open my System Restore function. I'm using Windows XP. This happened to me a few weeks ago;)
Hi and Welcome!! :) My name is Jeff. I would be more than happy to take a look at your malware results logs and help you with solving any malware problems you might have. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and know that I am working hard to get you a clean and functional system back in your hands. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • If you happen to have a flash drive/thumb drive please have that ready in the event that we need to use it.
IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete, download or install anything unless instructed to do so.
DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision. Doing so could make your system inoperable and could require a full reinstall of your Operating System and losing all your programs and data.

Having said that….Let's get going!!

Please download DDS from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
———-

Please download aswMBR to your desktop.

  • Double click the aswMBR icon to run it.
Vista and Windows 7 users right click the icon and choose "Run as administrator".
  • Click the Scan button to start scan.
  • When it finishes, press the save log button, save the logfile to your desktop and post its contents in your next reply.

In your next reply please post both of the logs created by DDS and the log created by aswMBR.exe. :)

Just a new notice: when trying to disable AvgFree, when I opened it, there was a notice that "There are no active components"-something I've never seen before. I have no way to disable this anti-virus program that I use. Sam
Hi,

Please download TDSSKiller.zip
  • Extract it to your desktop
  • Double click TDSSKiller.exe
  • click OK
  • Press Start Scan
  • If Malicious objects are found, select Skip by changing the Cure dropdown in the upper right.
  • Do Not Attempt To Fix Anything Now. We just need to look over the report and be sure we are removing the correct
    items.
  • Attach the log in your next reply
  • A copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root of the drive (typically C:\)

Hi jeffce, all seems to be working correctly now. Should I delete all the logs, programs, that we downloaded to desktop at this point? Are we through, now? Thanks again for all your help. Sam (shadow5)

Are we through, now?

Stick with me…we have some more work to do. :)

Please read through these instructions to familarize yourself with what to expect when this tool runs

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
4. If you get a message saying "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion", please restart your computer.

The scan warned me that "Lavasoft Ad-Watch Live! Anti-Virus" was running & that I should disable it. Could find NO instance of such program–did a "Search", looked in Control Panel's "Add or Remove Programs", physically checked "All Programs"; found a downloaded–but NOT installed– instance of "Lavasoft Ad-Aware" which had an 'uninstall' option: when I tried to actuate the 'uninstall' it told me that it could only uninstall 'installed' instances and this was NOT installed. Had to ignore warning & run ComboFix anyway. Seemed to run successfully. So, attached is the ComboFix log. Sam
Hi,

Looking better.

See this page for instructions on how to clear java's cache.

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features > remove all the Java Programs you see, now download the latest Java from the following link and install it:

Malwarebytes

I see that you have Malwarebytes already on your computer. Please open Malwarebytes, update it and then run a Quick Scan. Save the log that is created for your next reply.
———-

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET. Windows Vista/Windows 7 users will need to right click on their Internet Explorer shortcut, and select Run as Administrator
  • Note: For browsers other than Internet Explorer, you will be prompted to download and install esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe. Click on the link and save the file to a convenient location. Double click on it to install and a new window will open. Follow the prompts.
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • When the scan is done, if it shows a screen that says "Threats found!", then click "List of found threats", and then click "Export to text file…"
  • Save that text file on your desktop. Copy and paste the contents of that log as a reply to this topic.
  • Close the ESET online scan, and let me know how things are now.
———-
Cleared Java, removed older versions, and installed newest version from their site. Could not reach "esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe" needed for installing Eset Online Scanner when using other than I'net Exp. But MWB did update & run ok, and its log file of scan results is herewith enclosed. Sam
