Hello.
My wife’s laptop (Dell Inspiron w/Win7) has had its home page (Google) hijacked by Babylon.
MByte did not detect it. Spybot did, but was unable to fix it. Attempts to uninstall the program and tool
bar were unsuccessful, even when using Babylon’s instruction. In fact, Babylon does not appear in
the program list. Since this computer is used purely for her college work, it is a mystery as how it got here.
Everything was fine Friday when she was researching a paper, but Saturday afternoon the uninvited pest showed up.

She is very hesitant to continue using this computer due to severe restrictions placed upon interaction with the college.

Attached are the logs from OTL and aswMBR.

Thank you very much for your assistance!

Hi Bob L,

:welcome:

My name is NoodleTech. I would be glad to assist you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • Please be aware that removing malware is not without risk and while unrecoverable damage to systems is rare, it can happen and may require a re-format and re-install of your operating system. Because of this it is a good idea to back-up anything important saved on your computer.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Do not delete anything unless instructed to.
  • DO NOT use tools such as ComboFix without supervision.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clean.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Failure to respond within 3 days will result in this topic being closed - If you need more time to complete the steps required, please let me know.

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments,  attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
Thank you for your quick response! I will do as instructed as soon as I can. I am experiencing problems trying to get linked pages to open, so I will have to use the other computer to download and transfer to this one. My wife is doing college work, so I should have the reports for you late tomorrow morning or early afternoon. Thank you for your patience!

Hi Bob,

You're doing just fine :). I am able to download your attachment.

Please do the following

Refer to the ComboFix User's Guide

  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2

    * IMPORTANT !!! Place ComboFix.exe on your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
You can get help on disabling your protection programs here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

    ———————————————————————————————
  • Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled.

    ———————————————————————————————

NOTE: If you encounter a message "illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion" and no programs will run - please just reboot and that will resolve that error.
Ok, this is weird. I cannot link to the first one listed, but the second one comes up fine…except it is in Spanish! I'll have to do the download and transfer from the other computer in the morning. Is this a symptom of what this thing does? It is now more than just annoying! Your help and patience is much appreciated!
Hi Bob, Hmm… That's odd. No need to transfer it over. Just click "descargar" on the Spanish site. They should be the same. I doubt it's a symptom of Babylon. Although Babylon can be annoying, it's not really malicious :).
N T, I'm feeling a little dumb right now! When I referred to the inability to link to CF, I forgot that you mentioned the screen might go blank. The second attempt led to a notice to disable the AV, which I had done. A second warning led to "Norton 360 still active. ComboFix will continue to run at your own risk." OK led to "cannot rename ComboFix @(3) Please rename with alpha numerical… So, now I'm confused as how to proceed with CF. Norton AV is disabled. Should I disable other aspects of Norton, such as the firewall, etc?
Hi Bob, I'm sorry, I thought you meant that you were unable to download ComboFix. Can you elaborate on the screen going blank? Also, walk me through the steps you have taken thus far. You were able to download ComboFix from the website. You disabled your antivirus, then double clicked on ComboFix.exe?
When I first tried to run it, the screen went white and the cursor disappeared. I didn't notice that this computer drops a small icon on the lower left. The second time (the Spanish one) gave the previously mentioned warnings. I've tried to run it several times. It seems to start running, then stops to give the warning that the Norton 360 needs to be disabled. This last time I rebooted the computer, then disabled both the AV and firewall before running it. Still got the same messages including "You "cannot rename ComboFix (3)"
Bob, This is a wild guess, but that may be because you downloaded ComboFix several times and each subsequent time it was named ComboFix (1), ComboFix (2), etc. Can you try deleting all copies of ComboFix, then downloading a fresh copy from the first BleepingComputer link, then running it again?
NoodleTech, you must have the patience of Job! I actually thought of that and was going to just that very thing…'cept I can't find them! Not showing up on the desk top and not in the program list. Even checked the flash drive in case they went there. I've never used this 'puter or Win 7 before and I'm really starting to feel foolish. I'll try again in the morning. Maybe fresh eyes and a couple of cups of coffee will get me back on track. Fear not though…I don't own a gun so there's no chance I'll go You Tube on this thing!
Trust me Bob, you are one of the folks who make my job on this forum easy . ComboFix won't be listed in the "installed programs" list. Perhaps it is in the download folder? If we can't get it to run, it's not a big deal. I can deal with Babylon using OTL.
Sorry about the delay. I did find the previous attempts in the downloads file and deleted them (You are a genius!) Reran CF but it never prompted me to save anything, anywhere. What I did get was this: Completed stage 1-50 deleted files PrivacySafeGuard and WRL2125.tmp I couldn't copy or save the report. It stopped at C:\ProgramData\Roaming. It has been hung up there since about 11 this morning.
