"I'm looking for Geri Oraboni! She's my wife… erm… I mean ex-wife. I was told she was brought here. She has been shot!" said the man as he rushed into the emergency room admittance area of the hospital.

"Excuse me sir. I'm Dr. Doug. I'm sorry but we did everything we could. She didn't make it. I'm so sorry for your loss." said the attending physician. "This is inspector Tate. I believe he has some questions for you if you are up to it."

"Mr. Oraboni, I just have some routine questions. She was your ex-wife you say?"

"Yes. We were divorced 6 months ago but continue to maintain the same residence."

"Has there been any trouble? Anything out of the ordinary that we should know about?"

"No. Nothing I can think of… Wait… I guess that's not quite true. She has been acting a bit depressed recently. A couple of days ago, when I told her that I was going out of town next week on business… she freaked! She accused me of just making excuses to get away from her. She said that she was going to kill herself while I was gone and shook a bottle of sleeping pills at me - I suppose to show me she was serious and had the means - anyway, I took the pills from her… the bottle is still in my car. I attributed the whole thing to the fact that she had a few extra glasses of wine at dinner. It seemed to blow over because when I left the house at 7 pm last evening to go play poker at a friends house 100 miles south of here… I told her I would probably be spending the night there and go fishing in the morning… she had no objections. I didn't get back into town until this afternoon. I stopped by my office to check messages and called the house from there. The maid, Tashi, answered. She was hysterical!"

"And what exactly did your maid say?" inquired Dr. Doug.

"She said 'Oh Mr. Oraboni! They took my poor mistress to the hospital about half an hour ago. She was hurt real bad! Please hurry to her!' then she began to cry and sob so much that I couldn't get anything more out of her. I left the office immediately and rushed here. Inspector Tate? Dr. Doug? There really isn't anything I can tell you. Would it be possible for me to see her? Please?"

"Well. We are waiting for the Coroner to arrive before she is moved to the morgue. I think that if you are sure this is something you want to do…. this nurse will take you to the body."

"Thank you so much!"

"Well Dr. Doug. What a strange case. Imagine. Two people divorced for six months but still maintaining the same household? How modern can you get?"

"I'm not a policeman, Inspector Tate, but I agree this case does seem strange. I think you better detain Mr. Oraboni and dig a little deeper into his story. I believe you will find that if he didn't shoot her himself… then he knows who did!"

Why did Dr. Doug make this statement?
he knew she'd been shot but the only person he'd talked to was the maid who told him where she was but not what had happened to her. so how did he know she'd been shot?
Well done terry1966!

That, of course is the correct deduction.

If I remember correctly… you are a skittles fan:
