#1)

Andy has been murdered! Bob, Charlie, and Danny are the three suspects and have all been questioned.

The first one questioned responded "Bob is innocent of the murder!"
The other two responses (not necessarily in chronological order) were:
"Charlie is telling the truth!" and "Danny is lying!"

One of these three statements is a lie. Who is the murderer? (please provide logic).

#2)

The Olympic competitor barked out some ????? orders while he was trying to ????? away from the ?????.

The same 5 letters make of the three missing words. What are the 3 words?
1.Charlie: Adam is innocent of the murder
Adam: Bob is telling the truth
Bob: Charlie is lying.

This is if they were not talking in third person about themselves, then charlie is the murder.

2.The Olympic competitor barked out some STEAK orders while he was trying to SKATE away from the SKEAT.

1.Charlie: Adam is innocent of the murder
Adam: Bob is telling the truth
Bob: Charlie is lying.

I forgot their names and messed up
It should be

Danny: Bob is innocent of the murder
Bob: Charlie is telling the truth
Charlie: Danny is lying.
Still working on #1

2. The Olympic competitor barked out some terse orders while he was trying to steer away from the trees.

In order for each suspect to use a nan other than their own in the sentence only 2 sentences are possible each suspect.

Charlie and Danny can only use the sentence with Bob in it or the other person's name in it. This would leave Bob with the sentence with Charlie or Danny in it. Depending on if Charlie or Danny said "Bob is innocent of the murder!" would determine who's name appears in Bob's statement.

It should go like this.

Charlie said"Bob is innocent of the murder!"

Danny said"Charlie is telling the truth!"

Leaving Bob to say"Danny is lying!"

Or

Charlie said"Danny is lying!"

Danny said"Bob is innocent of the murder!"

Leaving Bob to say"Charlie is telling the truth!"

Reading through the first scenario Bob's claim that Danny is lying would mean that Charlie's statement is false and Bob did commit the crime.

The second scenario shows that Charlie's statement is true making Danny's false. Again seems Bob is guilty.

Of course this all hinges on the assumption that Bob though a murderer is a truthful feala and can be trusted.

2. The Olympic competitor barked out some terse orders while he was trying to steer away from the trees.
can't be this because there is more than 1 false statement in it if bob was the killer or it leaves a choice of 2 killers danny or charlie if only bob's statement is false.

Charlie said"Bob is innocent of the murder!"

Danny said"Charlie is telling the truth!"

Leaving Bob to say"Danny is lying!"

so yes bob is the killer and this is correct.

Charlie said"Danny is lying!"

Danny said"Bob is innocent of the murder!"

Leaving Bob to say"Charlie is telling the truth!"

well done oldman and darkblade, between the 2 of you, i think both questions are answered.

Either should work. If you trust and truely belive Bob when he says "Danny is lying!" then both Charlie and Danny are lying.

The same with Bob saying "Charlie is telling the truth!". You need to believe Bob is telling the truth in order for Bob to be the murderer.

However I missed this

One of these three statements is a lie

so this is the one I\ll go with

Charlie said"Danny is lying!"

Danny (the liar) said"Bob is innocent of the murder!"

Leaving Bob to say"Charlie is telling the truth!"

Only one statement is a lie… therefore Bob is the murderer and oldman960's second scenario - and ~DarkBlade~'s revised scenario is correct. However, it appears to me that ~DarkBlade~ said:

then charlie is the murder.

It may be that this statement should have been amended when the scenario was revised… but it doesn't appear that it was.

Also…

The Olympic competitor barked out some STEAK orders while he was trying to SKATE away from the SKEAT.

I'm sorry but I don't know what that means.

2. The Olympic competitor barked out some terse orders while he was trying to steer away from the trees.

I do know what that means and it appears to be a complete sentence.

Therefore… it looks like oldman960 got them both.

1.Charlie: Adam is innocent of the murder
Adam: Bob is telling the truth
Bob: Charlie is lying.

I forgot their names and messed up
It should be

Danny: Bob is innocent of the murder
Bob: Charlie is telling the truth
Charlie: Danny is lying.

i took this to mean bob was the killer even tho darkblade never included that statement in this his 3rd post, that's why i think darkblade deserved some credit.

after all oldman never used the statement bob is the killer either until after i'd made it. :D

just my humble opinion tho. :P

Unless I am having trouble reading again… I think that OM960 very specifically declared Bob as the murderer.

I'm not trying to take anything away from ~DarkBlade~. I acknowledge that his revised scenario is correct. However, after you determine who said what, you still need to discern which statement is false in order to identify the murderer. DB did not identify the false statement nor the murderer.

Besides, you all know that everyone who plays is a winner.
"seems" and "assumption" is not the definite article like "is"

to me it just says he's not sure of his logic and why he posted both

Charlie said"Bob is innocent of the murder!"

Danny said"Charlie is telling the truth!"

Leaving Bob to say"Danny is lying!"

or

Charlie said"Danny is lying!"

Danny said"Bob is innocent of the murder!"

Leaving Bob to say"Charlie is telling the truth!"

where as darkblade was sure of his logic (same as me) and knew (or thought we knew, because as everyone know each person always thinks their logic is correct, even when it's not)

there was only one logical answer and that (as verified by you) could only be

Charlie said"Danny is lying!"

Danny said"Bob is innocent of the murder!"

Leaving Bob to say"Charlie is telling the truth!"

yes darkblade never said bob is the killer but then again (me being generous maybe) he did say

I forgot their names and messed up
It should be

ps. as always your the ref and your decision is final, but i do enjoy the discussions that sometimes arise because of these puzzles almost as much as the puzzles themselves( sometimes more if truth be told. )

and yes we are all winners , right or wrong and owe you a big thank you for all the time and effort you put into finding these puzzles every week. :woot: just for anyone who may get the wrong idea, i have the greatest respect for both tomk and oldman they are 2 of the most intelligent and nicest people it has been my privilege to have met. (even if only in this virtual world of the internet.) :notworthy:
