A man had six sections of chain that he wanted to join together. The separate sections had 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, and 2 links that the man wanted in one chain of 29 links. The blacksmith said it costs 50 cents to open a link and 75 cents to weld it shut. What was the cheapest price the blacksmith could do the job for?
Using terry1966's theory that the links weren't welded shut it would be $2. If you open all 4 links in the section with 4 links you would have enough to join the remaining 5 piecies of chain. However the chain wouldn't be that strong so I suppose it would be best to weld the links shut. So that woud be another $3 for a total of $5
