msdcsc.exe causing havoc - WinXP freezing on load with over 200 proces

I've been trying to get a relative's PC working again and have hit a brick wall that I can't seem to get past.

The system is WinXP (SP3) running with 1GB of RAM, and an Athlon 64 X2 processor (3GHz)

When booting normally the PC gets past the Windows logon and displays the desktop then becomes unresponsive. The mouse still moves across the screen, but the busy cursor flashes continuously and after over an hour the system makes no progress in starting up. Windows Explorer fails to load when in normal startup mode.

In Safe Mode it's possible to get the system task manager to display and there are over 200 instances of msdcsc.exe running. The only way to get the PC to start responding is to manually force close on these - something which I know is not normally advised! Once control has been regained it's possible to manually start Windows Explorer but with vastly reduced functionality.

A scan with MWB in Safe Mode showed no problems and there are no system restore points that I can restore back to (for some reason these were disabled then never reenabled again).

I can't see anything that looks hugely out of place but even taking out any 'non-essential' tasks from the startup list and running a bare minimum startup in normal windows results in the same thing.

HJT log file is included below along with log files from DDS.

Any suggestions or help would be hugely appreciated as this is driving me nuts!

Hi buggyman,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

µTorrent
You have µTorrent, a P2P/file sharing programs installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm

I would recommend that you uninstall µTorrent, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

See if you can run this tool:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hi Tomk I'll have a run through your suggestions and see where I can get to - sorry for the delay in getting back to you btw. I'll reply again when I can give you an update on my progress. Cheers Buggyman :D
Hi Tomk Had to run combofix in Safe Mode as I couldn't get Windows to start normally at all. There was also no live internet connection available - not sure if this is relevant to the outcome or not. Folloiwing the scans, the PC rebooted out of safe mode and then came up with a BSOD (i'll try to attach this so you can have a look). I left the PC to do its stuff and it finally rebooted normally to the default profile and apparently normal function is seemingly restored. I've uninstalled uTorrent as recommended. Please advise of the next steps Cheers Buggyman :-) —– ComboFix 12-06-08.02 - Administrator 06/09/2012 11:11:49.4.2 - x86 MINIMAL Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\[removed]\Desktop\ComboFix.exe WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !! It appears that ComboFix did not complete it's processes. Please try again and see if it will run in regular mode. Preferably with internet access as it will not do everything it should without the recovery console installed for safety. If this computer cannot connect to the internet, we can install the recovery console manually. Let me know.
Hi Tomk Having major problems here I'm afraid. I can't seem to get Combofix to run properly and save a logfile. When it gets to the stage of asking to install the Recovery Console it throws up an error message saying "unable to enumerate boot partition properly" or something along those lines. It then goes through the scan process (all 50 or thereabouts stages) and restarts to a BSOD as shown in my previous posts. Following this it reboots to the normal desktop but I then can't get access to a log file. There's a file labelled 'Combofix' in the root C: directory, but I can't open this - it just takes me straight back to 'My Computer'. Is it possible to rename this as a .txt file or is there another part of the process missing here? I've uninstalled all AV programs from the PC as I couldn't manage to get these to stop running properly any other way. I'll try downloading the recovery console on its own outwith Combofix and see if I can get it to install on its own. Any suggestions on the next step?? Many thanks Buggyman
Hi again Ok, I've now tried installing the Windows Recovery Console from the windows recovery disk that I have which (allegedly) is for this PC. The installation couldn't complete properly and the following messages came up on the screen: "Setup was unable to create, locate or modify a critical file (C:\Boot.INI) needed to start Windows XP. The system cannot find the file specified." - follows by: "The installation did not complete correctly. It is possible that Windows XP startup files in the root directory were missing or in use during the installation. Please close any applications that might be using those files." After having a look, there isn't in fact any sign of the boot.ini file in the C: root directory, even after going through the Advanced tab or the system properties and the Startup and Recovery button to view the existing boot.ini file. I assume that this might be a bit of an issue. I know it's possible to rebuild the boot.ini file manually by booting directly from the Windows disc and then going into the recovery console, but will wait till you get back to me with the next step before I attempt anything else. Thanks for all the help so far by the way! :-) B

Hi Tomk

Still having a problem running Combofix. I got to the recovery download window and got the usual unable to enumerate boot partition properly message before it went to a blue screen, rebooted and then went back to the normal profile. I've carried out your instructions as per the last post re HJT and have taken the liberty of running a fresh scan - log attached below. The last itme I was able to do this, the PC was only able to boot into safe mode if I remember rightly so there may be a difference here.

I'm starting to think this PC has a thing about Combofix!!

Many thanks

B

:-)

Hmm…. that looks good.

Let's get an online scan please… if you can.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the [external image: Posted Image] icon on your desktop.
  • Check [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check [external image: Posted Image]
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin
scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push [external image: Posted Image]
  • Push [external image: Posted Image], and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as MyEsetScan. Alternatively, look for report in C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log.txt. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
