I'm so sorry to waste your time.
this time when I contacted corporate IT to get them to type the password for OfficeScan (to shut it off so i could run combo-fix), they insisted that I just send them the computer for complete re-imaging.
Please close this thread- thank you for your help and i'm REALLY sorry to have such a lame ending to this post.
