Hi I have an old HP NC8000 running windows98, AVG free & Google Chrome for internet browser
1. AVG 'Found threat' Trojan horse Hider.MPR in C:documents and SettingsMy ComputerLocal SettingsTempwqciyuax.sys
2. Google Chrome would not open (internet explorer will) (have removed Google Chrome from the computer
3. AVG anti virus run it starts scan then immediately finishes saying no threats found
4 I have started using Firefox as internet browser
5 none of the internet browsers will find avg web site
6 iexplore.com seems to hold up computer shutting down
7 Also running AVG Tune Up (still functioning)
8 Should I get the full AVG Internet protection software? (if I can fix this malware problem with your help!!)
Your assistance would be most appreciated thanks Greg

Hi,

The logs seem to suggest the operating system in Windows XP service pack 3 and not Windows 98, did you upgrade at some point?

"Windows XP Service Pack" = Windows XP Service Pack 3

Which is better, as windows 98 is no longer supported, so there are no security updates available for it, and anytime an unsupported system connects to the internet, it is vulnerable. WIndows XP3 is ending its time for support in 2013, so you will be faced with the same situation then.

Please do the following:

Run OTL.exe
  • Copy/paste the following text written inside of the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
Hi CatByte, have tried a few times to get OTL.exe to run! :( but each time it stops at : '04-HKCU.Run.[PfbByxel.] C:Documents and Settings ……..' (in the Custom Scans/Fixes' box) and 'Processing 03-HKU……Toolbar WebBrowser(no name)-7FEBEFE3-6B19-……… no CLSID value found' (just below the 'Custom Scans/Fixews box') :o Even redownloaded OTL.exe and ran it again with same result Also even resorted to removing AVG as it could only be de-activated for 15minutes and I can't reload it as the trojan? won't let me go to avg.com! Also please note there is 'TuneUp' utilities active which I have not been able to totally de-activate However have set all options to not function while i was trying to run OTL.exe What now? Hope you can get me through this! thanks Greg (baggy07) Should I re-run an OTL scan and Hijack this again????
Hi CatByte (again) sorry forgot to clariify that yes my laptop is running on Windows XP (professional with SP3) not 98 (I don't know why I thought that!) Also any hints on getting AVG or similar back onto the laptop? thanks Greg
Hi again, managed to run ComboFix :) and the log follows
As i could not reload AVG free (after removing it) as i could not acces an AVG related site
I did manage to download Avira but was not fully activated and even though I disabled it before running ComboFix Avira restarted as the log was being produced and a couple of odd things occurred after ComboFix rebooted laptop: (I turned off wireless internet modem while ComboFix was running)

1 Avira threat box appeared
"Detection: virus or unwanted program
'TR/Trash.Gen in C:\Doc and Settings\…..\pfbbyxel.exe
Acess denied
options were Remove or Details" (neither option taken until after log appeared)
Later a Realtime Protection Avira window appeared (is currently still open)
gave an option to move to quarantine but I will probably cancel that (not sure if it will be able to quarantine it anyway!)

2 another box opened
"Please wait while windows installs software for device"
(closed by itself no options)

3 Windows "System Properties" (on General Tab) opened

4 ANOTHER Avira threat box appeared
"RKIT/Hider.LKI was found in files
c:\Doc and Sett\…\wqciyuax.sys"

thank you for all your time and effort to help with these malware problems

those files have likely been deleted by ComboFix already, but we'll include them in the fix just to be certain, make certain Avira is disabled or it will interfere in what I am trying to do.

Please do the following:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?showtopic=123084

Collect::
C:\documents and Settings\My Computer\Local Settings\Temp\wqciyuax.sys
C:\Documents and Settings\My Computer\Local Settings\Application Data\hyjooxxu\pfbbyxel.exe

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\My Computer\Local Settings\Application Data\hyjooxxu

NetSvc::

ampqi

Registry::
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run-]
"PfbByxel"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon]
"Userinit"="c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"PfbByxel"=-

File::
c:\documents and settings\My Computer\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\pfbbyxel.exe

ClearJavaCache::

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix may request an update; please allow it.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box–do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\Documents and Settings\My Computer\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\pfbbyxel.exe.vir Win32/Ramnit.A virus
hope this is making progress with your able assistance! thanks
Generally when ramnit is found on a machine, I recommend to reformat and reinstall as ramnit is a polymorphic file infector and you can never really trust the machine afterwards, however, that being said, it appears that ComboFix has removed the infected files as the only detections were in the ComboFix quarantine.

I am concerned though that if there is any malicious code left over on your machine at all, then it will indeed permeate throughout the machine.

The fact that Avira was still finding infected files gives me cause for concern that it is still infecting files and will continue to do so.

Please run the following:

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Please click HERE to download Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool (click on the Download link for Version 11).
NOTE. This is quite large file, so be patient.

  • Double click on the file you just downloaded and let it install.
  • It will install to your desktop (be patient; it may take a while).
  • Accept license agreement and click "Start" button.
  • Click on Settings button [external image: Posted Image]
    • In Scan scope leave pre-checked items as they're and also checkmark My Computer
    • In Actions checkmark Select action: (disinfect; delete if disinfection fails) instead of preselected Prompt on detection
  • Click on Automatic Scan tab and then click on Start scanning button.
  • Before it is done it may prompt for action regardless of the setting so choose delete if prompted.
  • When the scan is done NO log will be produced.
  • Click on Report button [external image: Posted Image] then on Automatic Scan report tab.
  • Right click anywhere within right pane, click Select All then right click again and click Copy.
  • This will copy the items that it found to the clipboard you can then open notepad (go to start then run then type in notepad) and choose paste to paste the contents into Notepad.
  • You can save this on the desktop.
  • Post the contents of the document in your next reply.

reinstall Avira and run a complete scan and see if there are any more detections, if there are, please report what it finds and where
Hi CatByte thanks or your patience with this 'challenge' It has been rather more involved than I expected but thanks Followed your instructions re: the Kaspersky Virus removal tool However had problems downloading the tool as I got the message (a number of times) that the server had reset and could not download the file and clicking ok on the message box shut the whole download down (MInd you the problam simply could have been the wireless internet connection downloading at 50kbps at times) As this is the second reply (the first resulted in everything freezing when I tried to paste the rather large Kaspersky report file here) So rather than have that happen agin I have tried to attach it but that seems not be happenning either! (Just keeps saying uploading file but does not ! did the Kaspersky scan find anything?

Or were you not able to download and run it

(sorry your post isn't quite clear as to whether or not you were finally able to run it)

how is the computer running now? Are there any outstanding issues?

[external image: Posted Image] Your Java is out of date.
Java™ 6 Update 30 can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now.

Hi CatByte, yes was able to run Kaspersky's Virus removal tool
However the report file is 48Mb and seems rather large?
So was too large to cut and paste into the post and too large to upload
So I have cut and pasted the first 40 'pages' and the last 40 'pages' and have attached this as a seperate file (if this is any help?)

Issues?
Computer seems slow especially in refreshing the screen after say selecting a toolbar option
Firefox seems very slow
Internet Explorer opens but the page does not display properly in that the bottom of the page appears about half way up the page
a speed test I use at http://www.ozspeedtest.com/ shows irregular results such as a download speed of 4950 Mbps when the wireless connection runs at 0.7 to 1.4 Mbps
I am running the Avira anti virus software but only the free version given the 'issues' should I get the 'full' version for better detection / protection?

Will update Java now

thanks again Greg
No, the Kaspersky output seems quite large compared to what I have normally seen. I'm suspecting that ramnit has corrupted files that we are not going to see in logs, but you will continue to see in poor performance. The scans are not showing any more malware infection, but as you are experiencing, your performance is poor. I honestly think that the best solution for you is a reformat, you cannot trust a machine after ramnit has infected files as there really is no telling what damage it may have left in it's path. If you don't have an installation disk, quite often the manufacture of your machine will provide one for a nominal fee, you can use the product key you already have.
Hi CatByte thanks for your help Can you help with reformating hard drive? And does anything else need cleaning out as well? Particularly ensuring all bugs are removed? Given the malware & viruses involved is it NOT feasible to save anything off the hard drive Without risking copying an infected file? thanks Greg
Generally, documents, pictures and music are salvageable, but I wouldn't try and save any programs,

I'll post the usual "speech" that I have for ramnit, which contains links for how to reformat your computer.

Win32/Ramnit.A is a file infector with IRCBot functionality which infects .exe, and .HTML/HTM files, and opens a back door that compromises your computer. Using this backdoor, a remote attacker can access and instruct the infected computer to download and execute more malicious files. The infected .HTML or .HTM files may be detected as Virus:VBS/Ramnit.A. Win32/Ramnit.A!dll is a related file infector often seen with this infection. It too has IRCBot functionality which infects .exe, .dll  and .HTML/HTM files and opens a back door that compromises your computer. This component is injected into the default web browser by Worm:Win32/Ramnit.A which is dropped by a Ramnit infected executable file.

– Note: As with most malware infections, the threat name may be different depending on the anti-virus or anti-malware program which detected it. Each security vendor uses their own naming conventions to identify various types of malware.
With this particular infection the safest solution and only sure way to remove it effectively is to reformat and reinstall the OS.

Why? The malware injects code in legitimate files similar to the Virut virus and in many cases the infected files (which could number in the thousands) cannot be disinfected properly by your anti-virus. When disinfection is attempted, the files often become corrupted and the system may become unstable or irreparable. The longer Ramnit.A remains on a computer, the more files it infects and corrupts so the degree of infection can vary.

Ramnit is commonly spread via a flash drive (usb, pen, thumb, jump) infection where it copies Worm:Win32/Ramnit.A with a random file name. The infection is often contracted by visiting remote, crack and keygen sites. These type of sites are infested with a smörgåsbord of malware and a major source of system infection.

In my opinion, Ramnit.A is not effectively disinfectable, so your best option is to perform a full reformat as there is no guarantee this infection can be completely removed. In most instances it may have caused so much damage to your system files that it cannot be completely cleaned or repaired. Further, your machine has likely been compromised by the backdoor Trojan and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. It is dangerous and incorrect to assume the computer is secure even if your anti-virus reports that the malware appears to have been removed.

Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action is to wipe the drive clean, reformat and reinstall the OS. Please read:

Whenever a system has been compromised by a backdoor payload, it is impossible to know if or how much the backdoor has been used to affect your system…There are only a few ways to return a compromised system to a confident security configuration. These include:
• Reimaging the system
• Restoring the entire system using a full system backup from before the backdoor infection
• Reformatting and reinstalling the system

Backdoors and What They Mean to You

This is what Jesper M. Johansson at Microsoft TechNet has to say: Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do?.

The only way to clean a compromised system is to flatten and rebuild. That’s right. If you have a system that has been completely compromised, the only thing you can do is to flatten the system (reformat the system disk) and rebuild it from scratch (reinstall Windows and your applications).
