No, forgot you were on xp, uninstall/reinstall IE8
firefox and java were easy, but uninstalling IE8 was not.
i kept getting all these prompts and errors that i had to uninstall this file or that file before i could move on, i ended uninstalling everything i had for IE (and IE security and IE updates) and also the xp service pack3, then i tried re-installing everything but still kept getting more errors about how several .dll files wouldnt load and it seemed like every .exe file failed at the end of the process.
so i have no idea what was fixed/broken today with IE.
but on the brightside, it looks like firefox and java works again.
;-)
Lets see if we can replace any missing files.
Go to Start>run ,in the run box type sfc /scannow
it wouldnt run, it asked for an XP service pack 3 CD
I take it you do not have the xp sp3 cd.
Lets try this,
Download Windows repair from here and save to desktop, double click to install
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Twea…oad-195211.html
Open the program and click on step 4 ,create system restore point and registry backup
Go to step 5 click start, uncheck all boxes except Repair Intenet Explorer, then select start.

Ok, it ran and rebooted but now I can't open IE or firefox at all.
This is from my phone
Let me clarify,
It isn't like before where IE literally wouldn't open at all.
They each open but no Internet connection
That sounds weird, did you follow the instructions I gave exactly as the only repair that should have been checked was repair internet explorer.
Hopefully you did the backups in stage 4 so can you open the program again,go to stage 4 and select the restore options and see how that goes.
I set a restore point before I did the program (and did only repair IE as you said)
But today the restore failed
Go to Start > Run > type in CMD to open a command prompt.
Type in the following command in the command prompt and press Enter.
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Then also type the following command and hit enter.
netsh winsock reset catalog
Once that completes then restart the system and see then if you are able to get online.
You are going to need a flash drive and access to another computer to transfer files and logs across.
Please download
Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
Make sure "Include All Files" option remains checked. Press "Scan ". It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste the log to your reply.
