I've been having problems with my laptop of late running very slow. It's worst not long after start up and it slows down a freeze for anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes. I'm not sure if I have any malware causing any problems, but I'd appreciate any guidance in getting some performance back especially the freeze ups after booting. Below is an OTL scan with the recommended scan parameters:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad and if required the program will ask you to reboot to remove locked files.

Post the scan results using Copy/Paste

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have XP SP3, use the XP SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Next time you update your Java make sure you remove the check mark from adding the additional Junk like Ask Toolbar / Bing Toolbar, etc.

Copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. I ran ComboFix as directed. Combofix asked to be updated to which I said yes. Having done this I'm not sure if the script file was run.The laptop is still running slow. First of all, thanks LDTate for all your help so far

I've deleted the Symantec Live update as suggested. To be honest, I'd completely forgotten about it as it was pre-installed when I bought the laptop and thought it was disabled. One of the causes may have been a conflict between it and Kaspersky. I also noted the Ask taskbar you earlier identified was in the add/remove list and has since been deleted.

The laptop is now running a lot better and my next task is to free up a good chunk of hard disk space. It now makes sense why there's been a lot of hard disk thrashing and could have been one of the major causes of my problems - I will have to keep an eye on this. The laptop is almost 5 years old and the IT feller at work suggested I look into upgrading to Windows 7 as it's a far better OS then Vista.

I'd say now that the laptop problems are solved and once again, many thanks. Before you close the thread off, could you tell me (apart from what was previously mentioned), things that you identified from the ComboFix scans? I'd like to know what else slipped in and know what to keep an eye out for in the future.

For XP:

Click START run

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

This infection appears to have been cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it's impossible to be 100% sure that any machine is clean.

Log looks good

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
- From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
- Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

Thanks for the closing info. I don't use IE as my browser but all the settings were already set as recommended which means they were altered this way some time in the past.

I use Kaspersky as both my virus scanner and firewall. it updates itself at least daily so it ticks that box

I installed the M86 SecureBrowsing plugin for Firefox as suggested so hopefully that adds an extra level to my browsing security. I also use the NoScript addon which allows me to control which scripts are run on web sites.

MS updates are done not automatically but I download them on a choice basis (only install the Windows required ones).

I was a little concerned to see that this is not the first time I was infected with DRMNetVdm. I shall do some more research on this and make sure it doesn't reappear.

Once again, many thanks for your time and effort LDTate. I have always been security conscious but it goes to show what can slip through when you take your eye off the ball!
