Latest logs are posted below.

A couple of unusual things happened during this round of scans. First, after the computer rebooted follwoing the ComboFix scan, a new icon appeared on my desktop. It is the Internet Explorer icon but under the icon it says "The Internet." (no quotation marks) My usual IE shortcut icon is still there, with "Internet Explorer" under it.

Secondly, I had trouble reactivating Windows Defender and had to reboot the computer a second time before I found success.

Anyway, here are the logs:

Hello michael81

Thank you for the logs.

  • Please perform the following scan:

    • Please download MalwareBytes AntiMalware by clicking here and save the file (called mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

    • Right click on the mbam-setup.exe icon and select "Run as Administrator" to install the program.
    • Follow the prompts during installation and have the Installation Wizzard create a desktop icon.

JonTom, The Java installation apparently didn't work as I was unable to use the online scanner. I am going to try to install Java again, but it will be Sunday before I can respond. Thanks for you patience.
Hello michael81

I am going to try to install Java again, but it will be Sunday before I can respond

No problem. Let me know how it goes in your next reply.
I was not able to get Eset to run. When I accept the terms of use, it opens a new window but there's nothing in the window. Java issue, I guess? I've posted the MalwareBytes log below: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.61.0.1400 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: v2012.05.05.02 Windows Vista Service Pack 2 x86 NTFS Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421 Mike :: MIKE-PC [administrator] 5/6/2012 11:15:36 AM mbam-log-2012-05-06 (11-15-36).txt Scan type: Quick scan Scan options enabled: Memory | Startup | Registry | File System | Heuristics/Extra | Heuristics/Shuriken | PUP | PUM Scan options disabled: P2P Objects scanned: 243335 Time elapsed: 6 minute(s), 46 second(s) Memory Processes Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Folders Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Files Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) (end)
Hello michael81

Java issue, I guess?

I'm not sure. Were you able to update your Java?

When I accept the terms of use, it opens a new window but there's nothing in the window.

Are you sure you have disabled all of your security programs and any script blocking programs you may have running?

If you were unable to install the latest version of java, lets try this:

  • Please update your Java

    • To update your Java, Click on the "Windows Orb" then on "Control Panel" and then on the Java icon (looks like a coffee cup).
    • In the window that opens, click on the "Update" tab, and then on "Update Now".
    • Your Java should begin to update. Please follow any prompts that you receive.

If you are able to update your java using the above method, please give ESET another try.

If you are unable to update the java, or if ESET fails to run as it did before, try BitDefender instead:

  • BitDefender

    • Lets perform an online scan with BitDefender QuickScan.
    • Please be patient as scanning can take some time.
    • We recommend that you disable any real time protection that you have before starting the scan.
    • Click here here to access the BitDefender QuickScan page

    • For Firefox users:
    • Click on the Free Scan Now button.
    • You will be prompted to install a plug-in. Please Allow the installation.
    • If the process stalls you may need to refresh the page.
    • A Software Installation window will appear.
    • Click on Install Now and the plugin will be installed as an Add-on.
    • Restart Firefox when done. Go back to the BitDefender QuickScan page again and click on Free Scan Now and proceed accordingly.

    • For Internet Explorer users:
    • Click on the Free Scan Now button.
    • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX control. Please allow the control to install.
    • The page will refresh. Click on the Free Scan Now button again and proceed accordingly.

    • When scan has completed, click on View report and a Notepad log will open.
    • If ant malware has been detected, you will receive a warning and the link to the report will be displayed as the number of infections. Click on it.
    • Post the contents of this report in your next reply.
    • The reports can also be found by navigating to C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\QuickScan, (where "" is the Windows log-in name).

Please post the ESET/BitDefender log in your next reply.

If you encounter any problems with the scan come back and let me know.
My machine shows the latest version of Java is installed but I still can't get Eset scanner to display. I also double checked to make sure Windows Defender and Super Anti-Spyware were disabled. Hello michael81

I would like to double check something before we continue.

Please scan your machine again with aswMBR and post the new log in your next reply.
Hi, JonTom. I've tried to run aswMBR twice but it seems like it hangs up at this point. The log is below. Also, I'm still experiencing double-click problems. In fact, they're as bad as ever. aswMBR version 0.9.9.1665 Copyright© 2011 AVAST Software Run date: 2012-04-28 15:38:12 —————————– 15:38:12.941 OS Version: Windows 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 15:38:12.941 Number of processors: 2 586 0xF0D 15:38:12.941 ComputerName: MIKE-PC UserName: Mike 15:38:16.763 Initialize success 15:44:10.018 AVAST engine defs: 12042801 15:44:58.346 Disk 0 (boot) \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 -> \Device\Ide\IdeDeviceP0T0L0-0 15:44:58.346 Disk 0 Vendor: ST3500630AS 3.ADG Size: 476940MB BusType: 3 15:44:58.362 Disk 0 MBR read successfully 15:44:58.362 Disk 0 MBR scan 15:44:58.409 Disk 0 Windows VISTA default MBR code 15:44:58.424 Disk 0 Partition 1 00 DE Dell Utility Dell 8.0 47 MB offset 63 15:44:58.440 Disk 0 Partition 2 00 07 HPFS/NTFS NTFS 10240 MB offset 98304 15:44:58.456 Disk 0 Partition 3 80 (A) 07 HPFS/NTFS NTFS 466651 MB offset 21069824 15:44:58.471 Disk 0 scanning sectors +976771072 15:44:58.549 Disk 0 scanning C:\Windows\system32\drivers 15:45:10.703 Service scanning 15:45:11.327 Service $sys$DRMServer C:\Windows\system32\$sys$filesystem\$sys$DRMServer.exe **INFECTED** Win32:Rootkit-gen [Rtk] 15:45:13.713 Service CD_Proxy C:\Windows\CDProxyServ.exe **INFECTED** Win32:Rootkit-gen [Rtk] 15:45:34.524 Modules scanning 15:45:41.466 Disk 0 trace - Hello michael81

It looks like you have become re-infected. Is this machine connected to a network? If so, please isolate it while we work on a solution.

Also, please refrain from using any removable storage devices such as flash drives to reduce the chances of cross infection.

You should still have TDSSKiller on your desktop.

Please re-run it as you did before and allow anything malicious to be removed.

Next, drag the copy of Combofix that is on your desktop to your recycle bin and empty the bin.

Once you have done that, download a fresh copy of Combofix from Here and run it as you did before.

Please post the TDSSKiller log and the Combofix log in your next reply.
Hello. Here's the ComboFix log. I'm having a little trouble with TDSSKiller and will post its log separately. Our machine is not on a network. We did have some trouble last night with Google Chrome repeatedly crashing but no other symptoms, other than the double-click problem becoming more pronounced.
