NOTE: I have tried to remove the 4-counter.com entries using Hijack This. But nothing seems to work. I have been working with PC-cillin on this problem for about a week!

In the process I have installed Sun Java, IE Spyads, Spyware Blaster, Browser Hijack Blaster, and SPYBot. I always regularly do all pertinent XP updates as well as IE, Office XP, etc. PC-cillin is constantly being updated as well. Nothing I have tried has fixed the problem, so I hope you have some ideas.

Thanks for your assistance. I installed, updated and ran CWshredder and got a clean report. Next I went to IE Favorites and deleted all of the hijack-related items and then rebooted my computer. After that I checked IE again, and the default URL was "blank," but all of the bogus Favorite items are still there Next I ran SPYBOT and it picked up 15 items so I ran a fix. After taking a break I returned to find everything the same before I contacted you. I ran Hijackthis and deleted the 4-counter.com items, but it appears to me that my system still contains all of the hijack items. What else can we do?

hey monkfan,

ok lets try this again. First make sure all files are set to show>how:

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

next boot into safe mode by tapping either the F5 or F8 key at start up, chose safe mode, may take several minutes to get to desktop

once in safe mode find and delete this item:

>>>C:\WINDOWS\system32\winproc32.exe<<<<

still in safe mode run HJT and have it fix these items:

get it here; http://www.lavasoft.de/ (install and update to latest ref file, dont run yet)

Next, set folders, files to show:

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

next run and HJt fix this item:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpywareGuard] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winproc32.exe

next boot into safe mode by tapping either the F5 or F8 key at start up, chose safe mode, may take several minutes to get to desktop

once in safe mode bring up task mgr by cliclking ctrl-alt-delete at same time, if above 04 item is running -kill it, next look in the system32 dir for winproc32.exe and >>>delete it.<<<<<
also in safe mode configure then run ad-aware,

Next click the gear like icon (2nd from left) at top
under general options select:—They should have a green check mark–
Automatically save log-file
Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
Next to the left click the scanning tab and select:
Scan Within Archives
Scan Active Processes
Scan Registry
Deep Scan Registry
Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
Scan my Hosts file
Next click "Click Here to select drives + folders" a new window opens,select your hard drive(s),normally (C:)then click "Proceed"
Next under the Advanced tab select
Include additional process information
Include additional file information
Include environment information
Include additional object details
Under the Tweak tab, under Scanning engine select:
Unload recognized processes during scanning
Under Cleaning engine select:
Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion
Let windows remove files in use at next reboot
Next click "Proceed" to save then "next" then under "Select scan mode"
select "Use costum scanning options"
Make sure "Activate in-depth scan (Recommended)" is checked (green)
Then click "next"
When the scan is complete, click "next"then Right click in the window and choose "select all objects" from the drop down menu then press "next" and then click "ok" to the prompt. The objects are put in quarantine for later removal after everything is working ok. Reboot

dump temps again:
Go to Start > Run and type:cleanmgr. Windows will scan. When done check these 3 and press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Run CWShredder again, post another HJT log……………..shelf life

Hey, shelf life. Sorry for the delay, but I could not get online yesterday and did not have time to troubleshoot it. This morning I unistalled and reinstalled my modem, so it seems to be OK now. I followed everything you wrote, although HJt did not show the 04 HKCU [Spyware Guard] item that you mentioned. Other than this, I did everything you indicated before booting into safe mode. Everything went fine in this part except I could not find winproc32 anywhere. I was not sure how to get into system32; tried search and run functions to no avail and also did the same for winproc32 with no results. Next set up Ad-Aware as you requested, and that went fine. The only thing I wondered about was that the "delete quarantined items after scan" was checked, and I left it that way. Next, "Select all items" did not work for me-all of the items appeared again on a second scan, so this time I manually checked each one and that seemed to work. A third scan showed no new items, and 19 items are now in the quarantined file. Next I did the cleanmgr scan and selected the three areas as usual. I then ran CWShredder again, which came up clean, then ran SpyBot, which still shows 5 DSO's (HKEY_USERS…). These have been showing up on every SpyBot run. Here's the next HJT log. ****This is a continuing problem I have been having with a hijacked browser. I have not heard from anyone about what to do next for a while, so hope I can get a new analysis. The tech shelf life had been helping me, so maybe someone else can follow up, since I still have some problems that SpyBot is picking up and PC-cillin won't update or scan. hey monkfan, we meet again. i can only keep track of 10 posts. i recognized your name. i did a search and went back and looked at the other posts, that>> winproc32 is not showing up in your new HJT log. there is also another version of HJT out (1.98) The dso exploit ,see link>>http://www.safer-networking.org/en/paragraphs/currentfaqs.html I cannot id anything in your latest log that looks like it could be a problem, as far as i can tell. Hey, shelf life. I want you to know how much your support has meant to me during this highly frustrating problem. In the seven years I have had a computer, this is by far the most negative and intrusive situation I have had, and I am so pissed off at the jerks who run these inappropriate hijack programs. Knowing someone like you is on my side has helped me to stay calm and look at this as a mystery to be solved instead of an attack that I could focus on instead. hello monkfan, Other than optional fixes, i still cant id anything in your latest log or startup log that would be causing problems. Is your homepage changing on you? are you getting redirected? lots of popups? i see you have a firewall, make a note of anything unusual that asks for a internet connection. surf around on the internet, then post a new HJT log and we will compare them……………shelf life

Hey, shelf life. I agree that everything looks good now: homepage is OK, no redirection, popups, etc. My firewall shows lots of activity, but I can't tell who is initiating this. I will need to contact PC-cillin tech support since I can't scan or update. Other than that, I still have the quarantined files in AdAware; do you want me to delete them now? Also, I'll need to get some help with SpyBot still showing the DSO exploits. By the way, I show lots of DSO's in WinZip and I don't know how to delete them. Any suggestions?
