Hello. My computer is very slow and when it boots, it won't connect to the internet. I have cable internet with a recently replaced cable modem and I also use a US Robotics router. I have to unplug the power from the cable modem to get it to connect to the internet which I never had to do. The PC is running a pretty freshly installed copy of Windows XP with all of the service packs and updates, and ever when it does connect, there is an icon in the lower right corner that shows the two little computer screens trying to connect. Right now, I am connected to the internet, but if i hover the mouse over that little icon in the lower right next to the time, it says that is trying to obtain an IP address when in fact it already does have an address and it is connected.

If I hit CTRL-Alt-Delete and look at the task manager the CPU is always running, so something is consuming resources. Here is the HiJackThis log:

Hi CMD4649,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

As we work through your logs. Please remember to run any tools by Right-clicking on the icon and selecting Run As Administrator….

I'd like to see a different log please:

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.
Hello. Here are the contents of the dds file. I have also attached the attach file as a zip. I used 7-zip to compress it in zip format. I ran the scan in safe mode signed on as administrator because i was having a hard time downloading the files from the links you posted while the computer was running normally. . CMD4649,

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. The particular one on your system is a keylogger. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

Let's do this:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Hello. I think that I am going to re-format the hard drive. If there is any chance that the computer could still be compromised after cleaning it, then it's just better to go ahead and re-format it. I've already changed my passwords on most of my accounts and I'll do the rest today. Thanks for you help!
CMD4649,

Sorry it turned out this way… but I do not disagree with your choice.

As you get your system going again, please consider the following:

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
