Hello everybody,

My brother was rung by someone claiming to be from Windows and saying they could sort out all the alleged problems he had on his laptop. He allowed them remote access but then, when they started asking for money, he asked for them to stop and terminate the call. However, since the none of the programs (Microsoft Word, Windows Media Player etc) nor the internet, seem to be working at all on his laptop.

We're not sure what happened - maybe he was infected. Also, my brother says the call ended very abruptly so maybe the remote access was not given back to him.

The laptop is running Windows 7. We cannot download any spyware/malware removal programs as he has no internet. There probably is a way to download a spyware/malware removal program onto a memory stick and then transfer and run the program onto the infected laptop but I can't seem to be able to do it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Got this message as well:

"For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, Hijack This may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type

notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter. Find the line(s) Hijack This reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts' (with quotes) and reboot."

Wasn't sure how to do what was asked of me so left it. Can anyone explain what I have to do
Typed in notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and got this: # Copyright © 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # [removed] x.acme.com # x client host # localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself. # 127.0.0.1 localhost # ::1 localhost Not sure what it means though.

You may need to use a known clean computer to download the programs we need to run and transfer them by disk ( usb thumb drive ) to the infected one.

Please download Malwarebytes from Here or Here

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Post the report please

OTL by OldTimer
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.
Thank you so much for responding, Ken. OTL won't launch - this is the message I get when trying to open it. Exception EReadError in module OTL.exe at 00016A6B. Download DDS from one of the links below to your desktop

Link 1

  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • A black Screen will open, just read the contents and do nothing.
  • When the tool finishes, it will open 2 reports, DDS.txt and attach.txt
  • Copy/Paste the contents of 'DDS.txt' into your post.
  • 'attach.txt' should be zipped using Windows native zip utility and attached to your post. Compress and uncompress files (zip files)
It is recommended to download Avast Antivirus for better detection results. said the message, but I didn't download it as I can't access the internet on the infected computer. Would you advise downloading Avast onto a memory stick and doing the scan again?

Anyway, here is the logfile:

Will go ahead and download DDS now.
At this point we dont know if its malware that has effected your internet connection or if its a just plain old windows problem. Do you have your windows CD for this computer ? aswMBR didnt show much because it basically has not run so go ahead and lets see what DDS turns up
I'm going round my brother's later on. I'm pretty sure he's got the Windows CD so will get it then. Here is the DDS text: Will attach the attach.txt document in the following post. Hi,

Not looking at anything bad on your DDS log, not sure what these people have done. I dont see any services running, lets run this tool to check

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure "Include All Files" option remains checked.
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.
Here is the FSS log. There wasn't an option to 'Include all files'.: Farbar Service Scanner Version: 01-03-2012 Ran by [removed] (administrator) on 04-04-2012 at 18:52:04 Running from "E:\" Windows 7 Home Premium (X64) Boot Mode: Normal **************************************************************** Internet Services: ============ Dnscache Service is not running. Hey,

Looks like one of your drivers may be infected, but lets do this first

Go to Start > Run and type in services.msc > enter

When in services, right click on each one of these services and go to Properties and look for the Start Up Type and change each one to Automatic

Dnscache Client
Dhcp Client
Nsi Service

If you dont have a run box you can add it
Right-click the Start button, Properties, Customise - set the checkbox next to Run [it's near the end of the list].

Close it all out and reboot your system.

Then open FSS once more
We need to find a replacement for this file as this one has been patched by malware

afd.sys <–put this in the search box

press the "Search Files" button, once done a log will open, post the content in the next reply
