Hello SouthernBelle

Happy Friday!

Same to you :)

it only gave me a OTL.txt not the EXTRAS.txt like you wanted. Am I doing something wrong?

No, you did everything right. OTL only provides the extras.txt log after the first scan.

Babylon is not showing up in your system log at this time so we are going to have to try a few extra things:

  • Please flush your DNS Cache

    • To do this:
    • Click on "Start" and then on "Run"
    • Type cmd then press OK or hit Enter.
    • A command prompt will appear.
    • At the command prompt, type or copy/paste the following: ipconfig /flushdns (note the space between the “..g" and the "/f…” it needs to be there).
    • Hit Enter.
    • You will get a confirmation that the flush was successful.
    • Close the command box.

    Do you use a Router?

    If so, please reset it:

  • Please reset your Router

    • This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router.
    • Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds).
    • You may (or may not) be prompted for the routers default password.
    • You may also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset.

  • Please download SystemLook by JPShortstuff

    • Please download SystemLook by JPShortstuff by clicking here or here and save the file (called SystemLook.exe) to your desktop.
    • Double click SystemLook.exe to run the program.
    • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:

    :regfind
    *Babylon*

    :filefind
    *Babylon*

    :folderfind
    *Babylon*

    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • The scan may take some time. Please be patient.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
    • Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Please post the systemlook log in your next reply.

Hello SouthernBelle

I am hard wired to T3 cable on a server here at work. Not a seperate router.

Thank you for letting me know.

The systemlook log confirms the absence of Babylon on your machine.

Is babylon still showing up in IE after the dns cache flush?
Yes unfortunately it is and in fox fire too. :( its the weirdest thing. It only show up if I type a search command in the address line. Do you think I could start in safe mode and run some scans and find it? Ill be back Monday so no hurry. Enjoy your weekend :)
Hello SouthernBelle

Thank you for the logs.

Do you think I could start in safe mode and run some scans and find it?

I'm not sure that would make any difference to be honest.

Your latest OTL log is clean and systemlook has not located any instances of babylon on your machine.

This is making me think that there may possibly be a problem with your internet connection at work.

Are other machines that are connected to the server experiencing the same problem or is it just this one?

I have run spyware and Spybot S & D caught it but it still keep reappearing

Is spybot still detecting it?

Lets run some different scans to make sure that all bases have been covered:

  • Please perform the following scan

    • Please download DDS from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
    • Double click on the DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run).
    • When done, DDS.txt will open.
    • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
    • Save both reports to your desktop.
    • Please post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs in your next reply.

  • Please scan your system with GMER

    [external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
    • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
    • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
    • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
    • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOTKIT" entries

Please post the DDS logs and the GMER log in your next reply. If you encounter any problems with the scans come back and let me know.
Hello and Happy Monday.

Ran the scans and here are the logs. Only different in your instructions is I didn't have a "Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)" box to uncheck but I did see a "C:" checked so I unchecked it. Was that right?

I rebooted the server and the modem just for the heck of it. Couldn't hurt right?

After just glancing over these I'm seeing babylon reappearing and also a file called "Tnkbell" something or other. Can I get rid of that? Was I supposed to "zip" these files? I apologize if I was.

Hello SouthernBelle

After just glancing over these I'm seeing babylon reappearing

We did clean Babylon off the machine as it was absent from your last OTL log, but now it does appear to be back.

and also a file called "Tnkbell" something or other. Can I get rid of that?

Do you mean this entry?

mRun: [TkBellExe] "c:\program files\real\realplayer\update\realsched.exe" -osboot

This entry is related to RealPlayer and is completely legitimate. Why do you want to remove it?

  • Combofix

  • Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2

  • VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here .
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
  • Notes: Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  • Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  • Should there be issues with internet afterward:

In IE: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab -> Lan Settings -> uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

In Firefox: Tools Menu -> Options… -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection and uncheck the proxyserver, set it to No Proxy.

Please post the Combofix log in your next reply.
The only reason I questioned the "tkbell" is a friend sent me a Tinkerbell file and when I scanned it, it seemed to contain a virus so I didn't open it. Thought maybe it was from that. Thanks for clarifying that. Below is the combo fix log:

Hello SouthernBelle

Thank you for the log.

The only reason I questioned the "tkbell" is a friend sent me a Tinkerbell file and when I scanned it, it seemed to contain a virus so I didn't open it

Aha. Please do note that we are most likely talking about different things here since "Tinkerbell" is not the same thing as "TkBellExe".

Do you still have the file in question? If so, get rid of it if you know it to be infected.

Lets continue:

  • Please disable Spybot Teatimer

    • Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
    • On the left hand side, click "Tools", then click on the "Resident" icon in the list.
    • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active" box.
    • Click the "System Startup" icon in the List.
    • Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
    • If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
    • Exit Spybot S&D when done.

We need to use Combofix again but this time we will be running it in a slightly different way:

  • Please work through the following steps

    • Open Notepad (Click on "Start", then on "Run" and type "notepad" (without quotations) in the Open field, then click on "OK").
    • NOTE: Do not Use Wordpad or any other text editor except Notepad or the script will fail.
    • Copy and Paste the text in the quotebox below into the open Notepad window:

    • Save this as "CFScript.txt" (including the quotation marks), change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • Disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Refering to the picture below, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

      [external image: Posted Image]
    • When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.
    • Once the log is produced, re-engage your resident anti virus.

Please post the Combofix log in your next reply and let me know how the machine is running now.
Didn't seem to take as long this time. Log below:

Okay when I search in IE for Tom Coyote and enter BING comes up so YAYYYYY! Its gone from there. However, when I try to do a search in the address bar on Foxfire I get the following error: "The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded" So, babylon is not showing up but I can't enter search phrases in the address line anymore. Which is okay I guess because I can search from the search box. Thank you for all your help!! Any thing else I need to do?
Hello SouthernBelle

YAYYYYY! Its gone from there

However, when I try to do a search in the address bar on Foxfire I get the following error:

"The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded"

There are a number of different things that could cause this issue, ranging from missing extensions in the search terms you use (for example, only typing www.google rather than www.google.com) to potential conflicts with Firefox Addons.

Should you wish to pursue the issue further, the Firefox forum would be an excellent place to start. You can find it here.

Alternatively, you will also receive excellent assistance in our Browsers, Internet and email forum.

Since Babylon is no longer giving you problems lets take care of the remaining AV remnants and remove our tools:

  • Please download and run the AVG Removal Tool

    • The AVG removal tool will locate and remove all traces of AVG products from your computer.
    • To download the tool, click here and save the file (called avgremover.exe) to your desktop.
    • Double click on the avgremover.exe icon to run the program.
    • Follow any prompts you receive.
    • Once you have run the removal tool you may delete it from your machine.

  • Please download and run the Norton Removal Tool

    • The Norton removal tool will locate and remove all traces of Norton products from your computer.
    • To download the tool, click here.
    • Read throught the information on the page, and then select the Norton product that you have (this is the one that will be removed).
    • Follow the instructions to obtain the removal tool and to complete the removal process.

  • Please un-install your outdated Adobe

    • Click on "Start" then on "Control Panel" and then on "Add or remove programs".
    • Click on "remove a program". A list of currently installed programs will be displayed.
    • Find the "Adobe Reader 8.1.1" program, click on it once and then click on the "uninstall" button.
    • If you are prompted to re-boot your computer to complete the uninstall please do so.

  • Foistware

    • I can see from your log that you have Viewpoint Media Player installed.
    • Viewpoint Media Player is considered as foistware rather than malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".
    • It is recommended that you remove Viewpoint products. However, this choice is up to you.
    • To remove these programs, click "Start" and then on "Control Panel" and then on "Add or Remove Programs".
    • Select Viewpoint Media Player and click on "Remove".

  • Please Uninstall Combofix

    • Click on "Start" and then on "Run".
    • Now type combofix /uninstall in the run box and click "OK". Please note the space between the "x" and the "/Uninstall", it needs to be there.

  • Please perform the following cleanup procedure

    • Double click on the OTL.exe icon on your desktop to run the program.
    • Once OTL has opened, click on the "CleanUp!" button.
    • Follow any prompts that you receive.

  • Removal of Tools

    • You no longer need aswMBR, SystemLook, CKScanner or the Norton and AVG removal tools.
    • Please delete them from your machine.

Once you have completed the above steps you should be good to go! If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Finally, please take the time to read through the information provided below:
