Let's start over here so please describe in detail your current problem. And post your computer specs too please, including any recent hardware or software changes, and when the problem started.
My HD seems to just sit and run for the longest waiting to reach the net, also it's takes as long a five minutes for the HJT log to be obtained. It used to just take seconds. This has been going on for several weeks. No hardware or software changes that I know of. Here is a report of my computer hardware specs.

Hi Lewg, Whilst we are checking your logs (and there do seem to be a large number of entries for us to look over, so please bear with us…) please let us know how your computer performed when you booted it from the live linux Puppy disc that Jeff had you download and use….

Please bear in mind that Puppy runs entirely within RAM (not generally using your hard drive at all) so do not expect it to be as fast as normal Windows…… However if it runs Ok with no real problems on a reasonable length of test….. then it is indicating that there is nothing too far adrift with your hardware…..and that the problem lies with one or more of your Windows applications or the Windows operating system itself.

It's therefore a good idea for you to check your back up before we do anything else….. make sure it's right up to date, accurate, reproducible, comprehensive and with at least one extra copy copy kept safe offsite on removable media. (an external USB hard drive is good for this….Some folks tend to only perform a full backup weekly or so, and then risk losing everything recently created……(not a good strategy if you have important stuff on your computer…
I recommend that everything that is important to you on your computer (stuff you wouldn't want to lose) is included in your back up….as well as the normal settings for Internet, email, user names, passwords, documents and spreadsheets, photos, music, drivers, videos etc..and all downloaded or purchased executable files, together with their product serial numbers/keys and not to mention the Windows XP Media Centre product serial key. (25 chatacters, alphanumeric, 5 groups of 5) don't forget things like your actual emails received, sent, folders etc. address book/contact list, and Internet Explorer Favorites…. its well worth spending a short time checking that you are completely happy that your back up would be sufficient if it was called upon in earnest.

It would also be wise to look out your Microsoft XP Media Centre Installation discs (There will be more than one) and keep them handy just in case they should be needed in the futiure.

Although you have checked your hard drive…these tests are not infallible. so it would be wise to run the following two additional tests as soon as you have totally happy with your back up….
First pleasel check your hard disc and attempt to make any repairs necessary or identify any bad sectors that may be present. Here's how:

1 Start>Run>type in the white box
2 chkdsk /r
(note the space twixt k and / it needs to be there)
3 OK
4 At the black box
5 push the y key on your keyboard
6 push the Enter key on your keyboard
7 close down and restart your computer
Important allow your computer to run the disc checking utility for all 5 passes, do not interrupt it, let it run but be advised it may take 2 hours or so to complete…when its finished it will restart your computer.

next pleasel run the Windows Protected System File Utility…here's how:

1 Start>Run>type in the white box
sfc /scannow
(note the space twixt c and / it needs to be there
2 OK
The system scanner will commence and it usually takes around 20 minutes or so (do not use your computer whilst its running… ) let it run.
3 you should see a progress bar appear….
4 If SFC finds damaged missing or incorrect Windows Protected System files it will attempt to find good usable copies from different parts of your computer…. However if good clean copies of the correct files cannot be found then SFC will ask for the Windows XP installation disc to be inserted so it can copy good files direct from the disc to the dll cache. So its important to have this handy.

Have you made a disc image that will enable you to reimage your hard drive back to an ideal state?

Post let us know about any disc images made and any error codes you may have received and details of how your computer runs using Puppy Linux
Regards
paws
Backup has been done, You asked, have I made a disc image that will enable me to reimage my hard drive back to an ideal state? How do I do that? You also mentioned, it would also be wise to look out your Microsoft XP Media Centre Installation discs (There will be more than one) and keep them handy just in case they should be needed in the futiure. The only disk I have is the two Compaq Presario Recovery disk. These are the two disk I was asked to make when I set up the PC for the first time. I ran the chkdsk /r. However I am not sure about runing the SFC /scannow. If I run sfc /scannow, and if SFC finds damaged, missing, or incorrect Windows Protected System files, and I am asked for the Windows disk, in my case the recovery disk I created, should I use those? As for booting the Puppy disk when Jeff asked me to do so, I guess it did OK since he didn't mention anything.

You asked, have I made a disc image that will enable me to reimage my hard drive back to an ideal state? How do I do that?

Well I will answer that part for you while Paws is having a bit of a snooze, as I'm in a different time zone in Australia.

Download Macrium reflect (free verion) and use it to create an ISO image (an exact mirror image) of your operating system drive partition (usually C:) and save it to an external USB medium (hard drive or flash drive) or double-sided DVD.

That really should be done by everyone when their operating system is working perfectly, so when things go pear-shaped they can use the ISO mirror image to restore to 'perfect thanks' (the ultimate system restore} in about 10min.

See How to Use Macrium Reflect Free.

Cheers,
Lee
Hi Lewg, THanks to Lee hopefully the disc imaging is now all clear to you, ( but of course you have to do the disc image whilst your computer is working well, running fast and sweet with no problems free from viruses and malicious code etc…..) If you take an image of a badly running computer and then reimage it then you just replicate all the faults…. The installation disc situation is interesting I thought I saw in your logs (somewhere!) that your version of Windows was Media Centre and was a full retail version…however I might be mistaken……. if that was the case then you would have the correct discs…. Go ahead and run SFC…if it doesn't ask you for the disc it means that it either found no damaged or missing Windows Protected System files or if it did then it found good clean copies elsewhere on your computer….. If it does ask for the disc then you know you have the said damaged missing corrupted Protected System Files and this is of diagnostic significance to us…… You could try the discs that you made but there is a strong chance they will not work…… generally its the Microsoft XP Media Centre installation discs you need……… if you find you need the discs ( if SFC asks you to insert them to copy files to the dll cache) see if you can borrow them from a chum…..( for the purposes of running SFC this is perfectly OK) My purpose of enquiring about how your machine runs when using Linux Puppy is to help establish if your hardware is at fault or if its an application/Windows proplem…… if Puppy runs Ok and the machine responds in a reasonable manner when you open and close things explore your disc drives etc. then its pointing towards a software (applications and or Windows itself) as possibly being responsible… Puppy is a complete operating System a little different from windows but you will soon get used it….. so give it a good try out to see if your hardware is OK and let us know how you go Regards paws
I booted the Puppy CD and looked around at some of my pictures, etc. Worked very fast and when I clicked my mouse twice like I have to do on XP, The Puppy software popped up two windows of the same super fast….Using the Puppy disc I can see just how much better things are when moving around using it……I did not try and connect to the net. .What's next? :)
Hi Lewg, OK I understand.
it looks as though your hardware is Ok so its time for us to concentrate on your Windows installation drivers and applications.

1 First remove the Puppy disc and boot back into Windows and run the SFC as per the previous instructions.
Let us know how things go.
2 Next close down your computer wait 30 seconds with a blank black screen and now power on your computer and immediately start tapping f8 until you get to the advanced menu (in black) if you boot into normal Windows by mistake then try again but remember you must start tapping F8 immediately you press the power on button
3 select safe mode with networking
4 your screen may look a little strange because we have loaded only a minimal set of drivers(including a very basic video driver.)
5 See how your computer reacts is there any improvement on how it works icompared with normal Windows mode?
Note whilst operating in this safe mode your protections will not be fully effective so please…. no accessing emails or surfing….. if you want to try Internet Explorer then only access this one site please
www.bbc.co.uk
no others
and make sure you are connected via an ethernet cable to a router (these have protection in the form of a hardwaref firewall built in.)
let us know if the computer is reasonably OK using this type of safe mode, or if there is no improvement over Windows normal mode.
Regards
paws
Ran SFC and it ask for disc, my Recovery disk would would not work…….However booting in the Safe mode with networking, and accessing my files, pictures, etc, all worked OK. I ran the www.bbc..co.uk from the start menu's Run software, and the site popped up right away. Faster than through my normal windows mode. I moved around on the UK site and it worked great…..What's next? :) Let me mention, when my log on screen came up using the Safe mode with networking, it shows two accounts. Me using only my first name and the other showing my full name……What's with this…..In the windows normal mode accessing the accounts page it only shows two accounts me and Guest. :)
Hi Lewg,
The results you obtained running in safe mode are interesting diagnostically.
Incidentally there's no need to worry about the differences whilst using safe mode………safe mode is used purely for diagnostic purposes or by techs to fix problems..
The fact that SFC found missing/damaged files may need adressing. at some stage… so try and borrow the correct discs from a chum
this may take a bit of doing as the media centre version of XP was never as popular as the other versions……However it may be worth while trying a Win XP Pro disc with SP3 on it (or at least SP2) as Media Centre and Pro share a lot of files (have them in common) and on the odd occasion it has been known to work!

The fact that your machine runs OK in safe mode but not in normal mode is pointing towards something that is loading at startup in normal mode that is not present in safe mode. so we need to try and find a likely culprit.
Here's how:

1 Click on Start
2 click on Run
3 type in the white box
msconfig
4 push the Enter key.
(accept any warnings)
5 Click on the Startup tab,(across the top) and write down pencil and paper! what is currently starting (ticked or check marked),
6 click the "Disable All" button.
Reboot and see if it runs better.
Accept any warnings…note you will probably disable your anti virus with this procedure (so no downloading or surfing…..)
If yes, then use msconfig to enable several items at a time till you find the culprit. You will need to reboot each time so it can be a time consuming process…
Let us know how things go.
Regards
paws
I did as you said running msconfig, In the startup section, I disabled all the startup's. The PC seemed to be running OK after doing this. When I loaded just my virus Microsoft Essentials from the Msconfg startup and connected to the net, all seemed just fine, but when re-selecting things like NWIZ, NVMCTRAY, NVCPL, & DEFMGR, the things slowed down…..I finally stopped everything loading except my KBD, which is my Keyboard options, and the TEATIMER which is from SPYBOT SEARCH and DESTROY. Things seemed to be a little better, also my PC still takes a long time to shut down. This is another problem I have been having….. I might also mention now when I type in any box the letters are not showing up when I type them. They are delayed showing up. :pullhair:
HiLewg,

I disabled all the startup's. The PC seemed to be running OK after doing this

This is another positive step in the diagnostic process.

but when re-selecting things like NWIZ, NVMCTRAY, NVCPL, & DEFMGR, the things slowed down.

No this is not the way to proceed….. sorry if my instructions were not clear….
The purpose of enabling things is to identify the culprit……. In the workshop we enable half the available items and then then reboot…. if the problems are as bad this meams that the likely culprit is in the group of half that we enabled….. so we halve the group again….I hope you get my drift..

If at all uncertain, then just enable one item at a time, reboot and try your computer, if its still running OK then that item is likely not the troublemaker, so proceed to the next one…..and so on…(thats why you need the paper and pencil!) dont forget the reboot between each one…..eventually you will arrive at the one item that when you enable it and reboot its then that the computer slows down) (hopefully that is the culprit… post back with its details and we will provide directions on how to proceed.

Post back and let us know things are going… there are lots more steps to do… we can look at services next…
Any joy with borrowing the Windows XP MC SP3 installation disc?
Regards
paws
Looks like this NVCPL keeps loading after I uncheck it using MSCONFIG. Matter of fact it's listed two times in the startup list, and looks to be in the same directory……I think this could be my problem……I managed to stop it from loading once, and I noticed my computer name came back, now it's gone again. If I unselect all the startups, and reboot and load msconfig, I see the NVCPL is checked.
Hi Lewg, I need to know the file suffix on NVCPL is it..? .dll or .exe Also is it all or partially in caps? I need to know the exact file format please…thanks. Are you saying that this is the only startup item that slows your computer? and that you can enable everything else, without problem? Any luck yet with borrowing the installations discs? Regards paws
