Hi,

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 with MS Office Outlook 2003. When I run Outlook my yahoo email will take days to connect with the server then give me 6 month old mail that has been read & lots of copies of it too. Email goes out from me to people that are in my contact list that I didn't send. I have changed my password, & started to delete all my old mail off of the server. The last time I accessed my mail from the web I found 31 drafts in the draft folder all with links within the main body to a Canadian drug site. I also deleted all 56 of my contacts from the website.. I used the scanpst.exe program to rebuild my .pst file & to repair any errors within the file, this resulted in no change. This problem has been going on for months. I have a second email address from Cox Cable & most recently it will not download into outlook anymore outlook is telling me the password is no longer valid, however I can access my cox webmail with the current password. I just recently changed the cox password also, I can still access the webmail but I still have the same error with outlook. Here is a copy of my Hijackthis Log file thank you.

Hi and Welcome!! :) My name is Jeff. I would be more than happy to take a look at your malware results logs and help you with solving any malware problems you might have. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and know that I am working hard to get you a clean and functional system back in your hands. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • Please subscribe to this topic, if you haven't already.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.
DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.
Doing so could make your system inoperable and could require a full reinstall of your OS losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
These tools MUST be run from the executable (.exe) every time you run them
with Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

  • Go to Start>Control Panel>Folder Options>View
  • Choose to "Show hidden files and folders,"
  • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
  • Close the window with OK
———-

Please download DDS from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
———-

Please download aswMBR to your desktop.

  • Double click the aswMBR icon to run it.
Vista and Windows 7 users right click the icon and choose "Run as administrator".
  • Click the Scan button to start scan.
  • When it finishes, press the save log button, save the logfile to your desktop and post its contents in your next reply.

Hi,

Please read through these instructions to familarize yourself with what to expect when this tool runs

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Hi Michael (I hope it's ok to call you that),
  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:
    ClearJavaCache::

    DDS::
    Trusted Zone: af.mil\www.my
    Trusted Zone: hrblock.com
    Trusted Zone: opm.gov\www
    DPF: CabBuilder - hxxp://kiw.imgag.com/imgag/kiw/toolbar/download/InstallerControl.cab
    DPF: {CA127633-F57D-4475-9445-E5F5B63A01ED} - hxxp://invites.myspace.com/invites/MySpace.OutlookContactFinder.cab
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
———-
Hi Jeff,

Michael is fine, here are the latest scan results you ask for. I appreciate all the work you are doing, hope all is well, thank you.

Respectfully,
Michael A. Smith

Hi Michael,

I see that you have Malwarebytes on your computer. Please open Malwarebytes, update it and then run a Quick Scan. There will be a log created that I will need in your next reply.
———-

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • The virus signature database… will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

In your next reply please post the logs made by Malwarebytes and ESET online scanner. :)

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the Malwarebytes log. That one looks good.

Do you still want me to do the ESET Online Scan?

Yes please run ESET. :)

Hi Michael,

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:
    ClearJavaCache::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Mad Mike\My Documents\My Downloads\beach2awFree.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Mad Mike\My Documents\My Downloads\marine2awFree.exe
    C:\Program Files\RegZooka\RegZooka.exe

In your next reply please post the log made by ComboFix and let me know how your system is running. :)
Hi Jeff,

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How in the world did you that??? That is pure genius. I was thinking eventually Jeff is just going to notify me & tell me I have to get rid of my email address, that problem lies somewhere off of my computer, blah blah blah. What a life saver you are. I can finally download my email from both of my email accounts into Outlook, Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!I'm sure you know the havoc that a hijacked email address reap on a person, well this thing was just messing up my whole world, & it's been going on forever, it kept getting worse though, first it started out like a mild nuisance, then it eventually shut me out all together. It was sending emails out to everyone in contact list my contacts were changing there email addresses just so they would stop getting those erroneous emails. Can you kind of give the nutshell version of what happened to my computer, what you did to fix it, & most of all what I can do to prevent this from ever happing again? Thank very very very much Jeff.

Respectfully,
Michael A. Smith

Hi Michael,

I am glad to hear your system is running better now. :) You had some infections on your system yes, but luckily nothing overly nasty. One of the ways that you can help keep your system more secure is to be sure to keep your software up-to-date. I see you are using Windows XP Service Pack 2, but the most recent version is Service Pack 3. Out of date software is a very common way for infections to gain access to your system so we want to keep those updated. You can download and then install Windows XP Service Pack 3 from here.
———–

You have an older version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE

You may want to consider Foxit Reader instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.

Visit their support forum
Foxit Forum

In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader 9.5.0 first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.
———-

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own
folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe (double-click for XP/right-click and Run as Administrator for Vista), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then
    click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe (double-click for XP/right-click and Run as Administrator for Vista) again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer using the Offline version of either x86 (32bit operating system) or x64 (64bit operating system).
———-

Please run a fresh scan with DDS and then post the newly created logs into your next reply. :)
Hi Jeff, System is running great thank to you. I did the JRE thing you asked, & I think I did right. I understand you want me to uninstall Adobe Reader 9 & install Adobe Reader 10, the part I don't understand is the moving of PDF files, I thousands of PDF files on my computer, so I haven't done that yet. I did run the scans you asked for, thank you. Respectfully, Michael A Smith .
