I have got a nasty browser hijacker in my computer. I have tried spyhunter, mcaffee, malware, spybot and everything I can to solve on my own but I am no techie and I really don't know what I am doing. I can follow instructions if you give me a step by step. I am so afraid of deleting something i need in my computer so if someone with the know how would please help me I would be so grateful!

This is what happens…I go to yahoo and it is fine. I type something in the search bar and it takes me to the page with my results. If I click on any of the items on that page I could end up anywhere but the page I want. If I copy and paste the destination in my toolbar it takes me there just fine. ??? I have looked at quite a few people like me that have the same problem on the forum and hope you can help me too. I would just try to do what the instructions were for them but understand that it is different for everybody and you need to fix my specific bug. So i downloaded hijack this and copied the notepad it came up with.

I tried to do the hijack this but i couldn't get it to work, so I will post the otl txt files below.

Please tell me what I should do from here. Thanks so much for any help you could give me:)
Sue

Hello and Posted Image

My name is patndoris. I will be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. It will be very helpful if you follow these guidelines:
  • Malware logs are often lengthy and can take a lot of time to research and interpret. Please be patient while I review your logs.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive.
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications or delete anything without being directed to do so.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone. Please stick with me till you're given the "all clear".
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • Please reply within 3 days. If I do not hear back from you in that time frame, I will post a reminder for you. Topics with no reply in 4 days are closed!

Since you indicated you have already run Malwarebytes, I'd like to try a more aggressive tool on this problem.

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click anywhere on your window or do any other tasks on the computer while it is running. That may cause it to stall. You may also see the computer reboot while Combofix is running, this is completely normal and nothing to be alarmed about. It may appear Combofix is not doing anything but please give it plenty of time to run.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now
Thank you so much for trying to help me! I downloaded the comboFix.exe to my desktop and tried to shut off the antivirus applications. I right clicked on the spy hunter and stopped it from scanning, but i had difficulty shutting off the mcaffee. The button said it was off but apparently it was not because combo fix could not get past it. I tried to shut it down again and let the combo fix run for several hours….thinking that i had to be patient. I looked in the processes task bar and it said nothing was running, so apparently my test was screwed up somehow. I have removed mcaffee and can reinstall later so it won't be a problem if you want me to run this again. You said not to run again so I will await instructions from you. Thanks so much for replying to my problem. Sue
Let's just double check first to see if it ran or not. Please see if the file C:\ComboFix.txt exists on your system. If it does, you can open it and then copy and paste the contents of it in your reply. (It's just a text file that would open with notepad or Word). But if it does not exist (which is what I suspect) then please go ahead and run Combofix again per the previous instructions. If you still get an error about McAfee being on the system (since it is so hard to remove fully) then just go ahead and tell Combofix to run anyway and we'll see what we get. Thanks for asking to be safe. It's always better to err on the side of caution.

I see a couple of entries from your original OTL and in the Combofix log that are a little out of the ordinary and I'd like to remove them to be on the safe side. After running this fix, please confirm if the browser problem still exists.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

DDS::
DPF: {B9940246-4344-4D1B-BD82-DBAF7E657FF9} -
DPF: {F3D4C08D-3616-43F0-9E29-44C749B0664B} -

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe. ComboFix may request an update; please allow it. (Again, let Combofix run until it is done).

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.
OMG!!! I think you have done it! Thank you …Thank you …THANK YOU! I applied the fix as you have said. Here is the file it generated. I checked after it ended and the browser hijacking is not happening any more. Am I free of this? Is there anything else I have to do? I am going to attach my firewall…etc. I am so grateful for your help. I will await to hear from you before I do anything else. I'm so glad to hear that it looks like we've got this covered. There are a few more steps I'd like to do to be sure nothing else is lurking around, but yes, please do put your McAfee back on the machine and enable it now.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 7 update 2 and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java SE 7
  • Click the Download JRE button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement then select Accept License Agreement
  • Click on the link to download Windows x86 Offline and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java™ 6) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u2-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - check them ALL
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE. If you have any objection to doing this please omit this step
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

This scan make take awhile depending on how many items are on the computer. You may want to run it at a time you won't be needing the machine. It should be run from IE and I'd recommend not doing anything else while it's running.

Please go to here to run the online scannner from ESET.
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click on Advanced Settings and ensure these options are ticked:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • If any threats were found, click the 'List of found threats' , then click Export to text file….
  • Save it to your desktop, then please copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Please forgive the delay…I am on the road for a few days and the internet in the hotel is no good. I cannot download the program right now but will asap and submit the log as soon as is possible. So far everything is working great but I want to be sure too…so thanks for your patience and I will get the log to you soon!
I'm glad to hear things are working well. It's no problem to wait a couple of days - this is more of a "double check". No one program looks everywhere so it's good to do an online scan to be sure nothing has been missed. If you have spotty internet right now it would most definitely be better to wait until you get home where you have a faster and reliable connection. I will leave this thread open for a few days until you can get back to me. If you experience any trouble in the mean time please feel free to post back and let me know.
I was able to complete the steps you listed and the scan showed 2 problem. I exported to a file and the results are pasted below. ************************* C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\ProgramData\Tarma Installer\{DE3B7BF9-0770-4104-BC0B-B1CCCCE2F053}\_Setupx.dll.vir a variant of Win32/Adware.Yontoo.B application C:\System Volume Information\SystemRestore\FRStaging\ProgramData\Tarma Installer\{DE3B7BF9-0770-4104-BC0B-B1CCCCE2F053}\_Setupx.dll a variant of Win32/Adware.Yontoo.B application My computer seems to be acting right, but i guess there is still something. Please let me know what I need to do to get rid of this. Thank you! Sue
Not to worry, your system is just fine. One of the items found is already quarantined by Combofix. That will be removed when we do our Combofix cleanup in just a moment. The other is in a system restore point. It is not active. Another part of Combofix cleanup is to remove old restore points and to set a fresh one so that you can't become infected by old malware. So you see! You are fine as soon as we do the next step of Combofix cleanup! :)

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
  • Click the Windows Key + R to open the Run box.
  • Now type Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]

If there are any remaining tools or logs on your desktop you can right-click and delete them.

Great job! Your logs appear to be malware free and you do not appear to be experiencing any malware related problems.
Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer malware free and secure:

Use and Update your AntiVirus Software
It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Use only one antivirus and one firewall on your machine
Having more than one anti-virus program and one firewall on your machine, even if only one is running, can cause conflicts and slowdowns in the performance of the machine.

If you need more information on free anti-virus or firewall options please let me know and I will give you some recommendations.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
5. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
6. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
7. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
8. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
9. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
10. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
11. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
12. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
13. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Keep your Java, Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Up to Date
Older versions of these programs can contain security vulnerabilities. It is very important to keep them updated.

Update and Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software making sure you update definitions each time you scan.

To simplify making sure you have the latest version of many of your security programs and applications, you may want to consider:
Secunia's Personal Software Inspector (PSI). It is a free utility that scans your computer for installed applications and checks to see if they have the latest security patches and updates. If it finds any applications with possible security issues, links and/or instructions are provided for the necessariy updates.

Filehippo's Update Checker. It is free utilitiy that scan your computer for installed software, checks the versions and then sends this information to see if there are any newer releases. Available software updates are displayed and you can decide which ones to download and install. Among many other types of programs, they includes a number of the Anti-Spyware, Firewall/Security and Anti-Virus programs that have been recommended (though not all of them). Note: Definition files should be updated from within the programs themselves. The Update Checker look for newer versions of the software program, not definition files.

Good luck & Happy surfing!
Everything was fine and I woke up this morning and was starting to fix what you recommended and the bug is back! I am being redirected again!. I was fine and then somehow it got back in??? Shall I do the combo fix again?
Here is the new otl file. I am using a wifi router. I am renting a home for the winter and they have a Qwest modem/router. When we moved in everything worked well and we were able to get wifi throughout the house…then the wifi was intermittent and we were not able to access wifi or even get the netflix on tv. I tried to contact centurytel to have them troubleshoot the wifi and since I was not on the account they were not able to help me. I contacted the home owner but no reply as of yet. To troubleshoot on my own I stuck a pin in the reset button to see if that would work and solve the problem and was able to walk through resetting the machine. You could get internet by directly attaching the cord to computer but the house did not have wifi. I next hooked a router I brought from home to their Qwest unit which allows me to have wifi again. If you are thinking the problem may be in the Qwest unit, I can admit that it is also having a problem, and oddly enough my redirecting first occured around the same time that it started acting funny. My husband is using the internet on his laptop through my belkin router and is not affected by the bug. We never attached his machine by cord to the Qwest router though. Maybe not related but it is wierd.
