Earlier this week I noticed that my laptop began to lag when opening and closing web browsers (Firefox) and programs. A day later, two websites that I maintain became infected with malware (JS:150 as reported by Securi Security). The websites were both cleaned by Securi. Meanwhile, I ran my AV and it did not detect anything. I ran MalwareBytes Pro and that did not detect anything. I made sure I had the latest virus definitions for both programs. After Securi cleaned both sites and I found nothing in either of my full scans of my computer I again made updates to my websites. This morning I was alerted to a Trojan Horse in one of the websites which I maintain (js:Redirector-NT) and I am afraid that perhaps I do have a virus on my computer and keep infecting my websites.

I have disabled Norton and enabled Avast as my AV. Avast is what alerted me to the Trojan Horse.

I have a Toshiba Satellite T7600 and running Windows XP SP3.

Hi and Welcome!! :) My name is Jeff. I would be more than happy to take a look at your malware results logs and help you with solving any malware problems you might have. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and know that I am working hard to get you a clean and functional system back in your hands. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • Please subscribe to this topic, if you haven't already.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.
DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.
Doing so could make your system inoperable and could require a full reinstall of your OS losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
These tools MUST be run from the executable (.exe) every time you run them
with Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

Hi,

Please read through these instructions to familarize yourself with what to expect when this tool runs

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Jeff, I followed your instructions. CF took about 40 minutes to run and I received MSG : "Unable to create backup of the current registry file C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\software". I clicked yes to continue and the received another error message: "C:\WINDOWS\erdnt\subs\software unable to convert (?-can't remember exact wording right here) to C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\software RegReplaceKey:1450- insufficient system resources exist to complete request." Clicked to proceed, system rebooted windows but now I have no toolbar appearing on computer screen. Only seeing desktop background image. What should I do next?
Jeff, I pressed the power button to do a hard shut down and received an error message "CF3539.3XE Application Error. Application failed to initialize properly (07…..) [at this point the error message disappeared and I didn't catch the rest of it. The computer then shut down. I restarted the computer and everything came back on just fine, with the toolbar, however ComboFix did not reappear and therefore did not provide me with a log.
Hi Jill,

Lets try a different scan for now.

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.

Jeff, I am unable to get onto a web browser from my computer . After windows starts and I get an Internet connection I try to click a browser (tried chrome ans Firefox) but it freezes. Any advice?
Hi Jill, Try to boot into Safe Mode with Networking and perform the same steps. If that works post the log that is created by OTL…if not let me know what happens.
Jeff, Here are the results of the scan:

To submit a file to virustotal, please click VirusTotal

copy and paste the following into the upload a file box (one at a time if more than one file is listed)

C:\WINDOWS\GREAT7.INI

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mwigacc32.dll

Hi Jill,

Good job getting those scans done. :)
———

Please download and run ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT). This program allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed. **Remember if you are using Windows Vista as your operating system right-click the executable and Run as Administrator.

Run OTL.exe
