:pullhair: ok i just upgraded to windows 7 ultimate so i could use the virtual pc,, i have a few old windows OS disks and for the hell of it i made several virtual pcs (98SE/2000/XP) but i also had a disk image of all the diskettes of windows 3.1 given to me by a friends dad, i thought i could run it in virtual pc, well i found out not, but me being stubborn really wanted to see windows 3.1 run so i found out you can run it in DOS-BOX if you get all of the drivers and mount them correctly so i got all these drivers from an online forum i extracted them and was trying to drag some of the files to a new folder…..well explorer stalled out it was like it couldn't move the files, so i got most of the files deleted, except 3 and they are all .FON files created in 1992, windows will NOT delete them, i some how even have a shortcut to one of them in my recycling bin (i may have done that while mass deleting flies) and now that short cut to one of the two .FON files wont delete either (thats the third file included with the other two) ive tried deleting them with command prompt…..ive tryed several apps online that are suppose to delete files no matter what, they all lock up to the old (not responding) and wont do any thing, ive tried to see if they are listed as readonly and i have not been able to make them not read only, heck i even booted a live linux disk and tried to get rid of them that way….nouthing……..im at a real loss with this one, i have no clue how some files from 1992 are so much trouble
Have you tried running a CHKDSK on your drive? If you boot a Linux disc and you still can't delete them, you either didn't mount the partition correctly in Linux, or the file system is corrupt.
ok this is really agrovating……that move on boot actually got rid of "8514FIX.FON" but when i select the "SMALLF.FON" the app goes to (not responding), and the shortcut in my recycle bin is to the "SMALLF.FON" and i cant even select that one cuz it in the recycle bin…..like worst case scenario i could live with the "SMALLF.FON" being stuck on my HDD, cuz it lives in my downloads folder and docent really cause any real problems……… but its shortcut makes it so i cant just click "empty recycle bin" CUZ IT WONT DELETE IT AND IT LOCKS UP<<<< (sorry not yelling at you guys its just its really frustrating having it almost be solved but it fixed half and i am thankful) this is all worse since i bricked my android yesterday too -.- ….but my company will give me a replacement for that, but my laptop…..its brand new and there isnt a replacement plan and i dont want odd files stuck on it….it just bothers me….uhg…..please help asap pleaseeeeeeeee
just a little update, when the file is opened in note pad it dose contain data, so it is an actual file

Just to reiterate. If you booted a Linux disc and are unable to delete the file then there is some type of file system corruption. Its unfortunate, but CHKDSK does not always fix it. I have run across this a few times over the years. The only solution I've found is to reformat the hard drive and start over. Usually the corruption is so bad that its tedious just to copy the files off of the drive that you need before formatting it. In your case, it appears to be only one file, but you're likely to find others if you actually tried to copy the entire drive. If there are any other solutions found, I'd be curious to know what they are. But, I just assume there is some corruption CHKDSK just doesn't recognize. Its rare, but happens. I was able to know it was corruption because I could not copy, move, delete, or rename the file(s)/folder(s) in question under any circumstance. Ultimately, it may be best to ignore, which is what I did because the problem occured on my own personal computer once. Eventually, I upgraded to windows 7 down the road and took the opportunity to reformat at that point.
well like yu said im not even sure if i mounted it correcly in linux, im a linux noob and i did get some sort of ntfs error when mounting, i was using puppy linux
also. i would just restart if i could, but i just got this laptop in dec so i dont have many things i couldnt just reinstall and it came with 7 preinstalled, i dont have a 7 boot disk,
You should be able to restore the laptop to factory new state using the recovery partition on the hard drive. How you do this varies with each manufacturer. What is the make and model number of the laptop? For many, you can click on Start then look for a folder with the name of the manufacturer or Maintenance. You can start the recovery process from there. Otherwise you press a Fn key or some key combo to start the process at boot time.
well here is my full system sepcs if this will help, also it came with windows 7 home premium, i just upgraded to ultimate, will i be able to retain that???

Re Hewett-Packet HP pavilion dv6 notebook.

F11 is the recovery key to press after seeing the logo at boot-up, or you should be able to open HP "Recovery Manager" to select "Reset computer to original factory settings".

I'm not sure (you'll soon find out), but you may get a notice asking you to insert a HP recovery disc. Did the PC come with any disks or were you getting reminders ro create one when the PC was new?

PC Recovery Disc Creator
This application is used when the computer is setup and run for the first time. In the shipping box, a card, shaped like a CD disk, provides a reminder to make a set recovery disks. A message is displayed on the monitor periodically until the recovery disks are created or the reminder function is turned off.

Creating the recovery discs in Windows.

You should be able to upgrade to Ultimate again if you have paid for an upgrade.

Cheers,
Lee
no this pc came with no disks, i unboxed it december/ 21/ 2011, so i have had it a little over a month, so its still new to me, but i know it came with no disks, also when it resores it formatts right?? i hope so, since to get rid of the accused corruption it needs to be formatted,
