Hello and thanks for this great service!
One month ago Avast found rundll32, in system32 folder, to be a medium risk. Now just last week, explorer is a high security risk.
Cannot do anything within avast, nor boottime scan with avast, nor safe mode with avast, nor spybot (with update) from ultimate boot cd. Also tried replacing both files with good ones from another OS, swapped while booted in ultimate boot cd.

Hi CatByte, and thank you.

One note, I am running Master Booter for dual boot, I'm sorry I forgot to mention that.
Also, when opening aswMBR I was not asked to download virus definitions. Other than that, here you go:

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
Hello.

Hello. I'm sorry, when I ran ESAT it didn't give me an option to do anything - like save/print a log. Followed your instructions precisely, although the first time I ran it I was using Chrome browser so it downloaded an executable with all the options you had mentioned. Since there was no log I opened IE and ran it again to the same outcome. Hope I'm not failing on you now. Hi

There probably were no threats found, hence, no log to save, which is a good thing :)

Please advise how the computer is running now and if there are any outstanding issues
Hi. The computer never really ran slower or acted peculiar. Just avast showed the rundll32.exe process as Win32:RunDllMod[Susp] about 5 or 6 weeks ago, then 1 or 2 weeks ago it showed the process explorer.exe as a Win32:Malware-gen. A few weeks into it all I noticed there were no system restore points prior to when (I assume) I first contracted the virus (if I even have one), and the past couple weeks I've noticed the restore points getting closer and closer together to the point of there being one every day for about 10 days out, then nothing beyond it. That seems strange to me, but I'm kinda new here. Thanks for all your help. Avast still shows them as threats, along with the mbamservice.exe stuff. Maybe I'm eff'd. I've been wondering if I do a clean re-install, will it mess with my Master Booter and Partition'd Magic stuff? Can't loose that other boot, it took some effort getting an old ProTools box to work on the XPsp1 in the other virtual drive.
Actually, something I haven't noticed until now (that my GF took her nice laptop away), is that I can't stream video very well. Used to be able to get netflix, amazon and the like decently. Now the video's choppy and pretty unwatchable, while the sound never misses a beat. Did I download some video virus from the redtube? Because, yes, last month I was going there a bit more often - funny though those videos play without a hitch.
Well, also, Avast seems to be using a bit more CPU. Specifically, Avastsvc.exe, and with the "web shield" turned off it went from anywhere between 30% to 80% CPU usage down to an off and on 10% while web browsing. I don't know if that's because I'm letting Malwarebytes run concurrently or what? Maybe Avast is the bug - all the other delousing software didn't see poop. Interesting (to me) when I ran msconfig to turn off Avast Svc at boot, it didn't actually do anything besides leave itself unchecked - Avast booted as normal with the restart. Also with running Malwarebytes I think, Avast does not show up in the system tray. At least with the "Web Shield" aspect of Avast's live scanning turned off I can continue with my beloved Trailer Park Boys marathon. Though, this seems like a poor way to temporarily skirt a seemingly dangerous problem.
Hi,

please uninstall avast completely and download and run Microsoft Security Essentials

let me know if it finds anything and if the performance of your system improves

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

use this to uninstall Avast

How to uninstall our software using aswClear.exe:
  • Download aswClear.exe on to your desktop
  • Open (execute) it
  • If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
  • Click REMOVE
  • Restart your computer
Sorry, Couldn't install Security Essentials - can't find my information for my XP disc to validate this installation of XP and Security Essentials won't run without it.
