Hi, I was recommended to this forum via a Tech in the Malware forum. This is the basic rundown of my issues: Monitor: The monitor on my laptop seems to have died, It will work through part of the boot up process, then will go completely black. Luckily I run dual monitors so I just turned the 2nd monitor into my primary, but the weird thing is, when I close and open my laptop when logged in, the monitor will work for a few seconds up to a minute or 2 on occasion but then go right back off. The other tech had me run through safe mode yesterday, and it worked the whole time then (this is where he thought it could be a driver issue and referred me to this forum), and after restarting worked for the night. Now today the issues have began again. USB Port: This issue is straight forward, 1 out of my 3 USB ports will does not work at all, it randomly stopped one day. It will not even read that an item is plugged into it. Any advise would be great, thank you!
Laptop? Really?

from post #20 you seem to introduce a second issue regarding use and interaction of Laptop and Desktop

ill give you the rundown on it before i do those next steps so you can think about it, because im completely baffled by this… i run dual screens (laptop n secondary monitor) so my laptop screen seemed to die per se, it would work during part of the boot up, but it seemed like there was no back light. and then sometime through the bootup/login stage it would turn completely off. (had 2 make my secondary my primary) but if i was logged in and at my desktop, if i closed and opened the laptop, the screen would work for like 20 seconds, just enough to drag all my stuff over to the secondary. Pretty much all my friends assumed that it was a hardware malfunction, maybe a loose solder joint or something along those lines. but now today when you had me boot through safe mode it stayed on, and after i ran the programs when i went back to the normal login it is currently still on (kinda too scared to move everything back over to the laptop monitor) have you ever heard of something like that happening, or maybe know some way to test to make sure it wont die on me again?

Therefore, we know absolutely nothing about the Brand, Model, Operating System, hardware installed, of your Laptop.

What we do "know" is that you run a second Monitor, with your Laptop.
What we don't know is whether that same second Monitor is also used with your Desktop and maybe connected via a KMV switch?

So if we are going to help with the screen display issue for your laptop, we will need to start by gathering as much information about your Laptop as possible.
And, I might add, that we don't know if your Laptop was also infected with malware similar to your Desktop.

Do you have Microsoft Office - Word installed on that Laptop? <– Important to know

If you do (have MS Word), please go to http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
**Download and Run Belarc Advisor PC Audit scan.

–Copy all of the information from the scan
–Paste all of the information from the scan into a Word Document
–Save that word document to your a location you can easily find. Name it Belarc02262012.doc
–Scroll down in the Belarc information to the portion titled: Software Licenses
–Remove any information regarding Software Licenses <– Very Important (never give License ID information since it can be exploited by others)
–Do Not remove the portion regarding Software Versions since we need to see what is installed.

–Right-click on Belarc02262012.doc
–Select - Send to - Compress (zipped) Folder

**Attach that zipped folder in your next post.

We will then have a look at the hardware and software on your Laptop.
(No personally identifying information will be exposed, since your removed your License information per above)

We can then offer a more informed response and possibly some solutions to help with your Laptop.

Best Regards
^those are all the specs from my laptop, i do not own a desktop edit: i am currently running the program you requested, i have ms word 2007 that came w/ the computer installed
OK.

That's a generous size Hard Drive for a Laptop.
And you have it Partitioned into C:\, D:\, E:\, F:\ ??

What got me thinking you were dealing with two machines was your post #20 where you state:

but if i was logged in and at my desktop, if i closed and opened the laptop, the screen would work for like 20 seconds, just enough to drag all my stuff over to the secondary.

That's fine.
Thanks for clarifying.

We'll still need the information from Belar Advisor.
Please proceed with the steps in my post above, so that you can include the results of the scan.

If you do not have MS Office Word, then we will have to get by with less.

We can probably get sufficient driver and hardware information from another useful online scan tool at PCPitstop

Please Run the PCPitstop.com OverDrive Full Tests

Here's how:

You must use your Internet Explorer for this procedure. (doesn't work so well in Firefox or others). If your machine is running Vista or Windows 7, you must Select IE to “Run as Administrator”. After completing PCPitstop OverDrive you can close your IE browser and re-open it Normally so that you are no longer running as administrator.

Go to: http://www.pcpitstop.com
Click on "Free Computer Check-up" listed below PC Pitstop OverDrive
In the User Login - Click on "Sign up FREE!"
You'll need to submit a valid email address and create your own password, then click - Create Account(button)

Now enter your email address and password to Log in, Select - Scan this system Now!(button)
You will then be asked to download an ActiveX component and allow it to install.
It is safe and does not compromise your privacy.
Follow the on-screen prompts to install the ActiveX and to allow the Full Tests to be run on your machine.

The Full Tests take about 2 1/2 - 3 minutes on most machines.
When complete, a Results - Summary - Recommended Fixes will be displayed.

Please post the URL internet address, from your Results, back here into this Topic Thread so that we can review the configuration and present performance levels of your machine.

Note: During the graphics 2D and graphics 3D testing, your screen will display some rapidly moving objects.
If you are sensitive to visual flashing, it may cause dizziness. Therefore, look away from the screen during that portion of the testing.

After reviewing the results we will be more informed and may be able to provide better recommendations for you to work towards improving your machine's performance.

While PCPitstop does offer a variety of Paid Products, the PCPitstop OverDrive testing is FREE. Please ignore the references to Paid Products. At WTT we prefer to provide manual solution instructions that you can apply directly to your machine.

Best Regards
[Well I have a 1tb external hard drive attached, i believe that is an F drive, and due to my studies in college (computer aided drafting), I figured I would need A LOT of HD space, thus why the large amounts within it. The requested file has been zipped, and should be attached. *edit: as for the "desktop" comment, i meant that as my home screen, sorry for the mis-clarification
hey, just checking in to see if you needed anything more from me, i deleted the sections that had what you mentioned in them, it would not allow me to delete my other attachment though, attached is the modified report. sorry for the delay, my hectic work schedule started back up.
Hi, 1 did you follow Doug's directions to perform the PCPit stop tests? 2 If so please advise the link for your results (see his post numbered 4). 3 Does your machine still work perfectly in safe mode? 4 Have you installed all your motherboard chipset drivers, video and audio drivers (updated as required…?).. 5 Have you deleted all files downloaded via torrents where the provenance of the files is not 100%…including all key gen's cracks etc?. Regards paws

*i was unaware he wanted both done, i thought he wanted 1 or the other done*

3- i will test this now, and edit/update in a few minutes

*edit: it does seem to run in safe mode, but seems to give the issue of the screen being a little darker (like the back light isn't as bright as it should be) and it tends to have a slight flicker light-wise, but does not shut off like it normally would in regular boot mode*

4- I am unsure and don't know how to check
5- to the best of my knowledge, i went through my computer multiple times and believe that i have.
Doug is a bit under the weather right now, sorry. The PCPitStop report shows you Video, Network and USB drivers are not at the latest level. 📎PCPit.jpg That would be a good place to start. Also, try booting to the Advanced Boot Options Menu (Safe Mode menu) and select VGA mode. That will boot your computer in VGA mode at 800x600 DPI and 24bit resolution. See if it boots normally and the display continues to work. If yes then definitely download and install the latest available video driver from the manufacturers web site or from the Nvidia web site. Also looks like your Java is very, very old. You need to update the the latest JRE6 U20 version. Do this at java.com.
hey, sorry for delay, just finished day 8 of 9 days straight working, i went through and attempted to update every driver i could find that needed updated (hopefully i got them all). My computer monitor is currently working again like nothing is wrong, so I do not know if the nvidia driver update was a true fix or not because it worked for a day or so last time i tried some stuff to the display. as for the java, i believe i also have that updated. the usb port still is not responding to anything being plugged in. thanks again!
the only instruction i am having issues following is "uninstall "THEM" one at a time." uninstally what? the usb roots or the greyed out options?
Everything except the mouse. Unplug all USB devices before starting this, unless you have a USB mouse, leave that. When you reboot let Windows rediscover and reload drivers as need for all USB devices. Give it time to complete, don't try to use the system until a few minutes after boot looks like it's done.
