Getting 404 Not Found nginx in IE8 and Firefox 9 on search site google, bing, yahoo, etc.
Hosts file looks completely normal.
Scanned with MS Security Essentials, MBAM, AdAware, MS Safety Scan, Spybot
Ran full scan in safe mode.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Hello itpro52d,

Welcome to the What the Tech Virus, Spyware & Malware Removal Forum. My name is Troy and I will be assisting you with the malware issues on your computer.
Because I am still in training, all the advice I give must first be checked by an instructor, therefore there may be some delays in my replies.

A few things before we get started
  • If you have not already done so Please read these forum rules.
  • Please be aware that removing malware is not without risk and while unrecoverable damage to systems is rare, it can happen and require a re-format and re-install of your operating system. Because of this it is a good idea to back-up anything important saved on your computer.
  • Any fixes I may post will be specific to your computer and should not be used on other computers.
  • While we work on your computer please don't install any new programs, try any other fixes, or run any tools other than those requested.
  • If at any time my instructions are not clear please ask before proceeding.
  • Failure to respond within 3 days will result in this topic being closed - If you need more time to complete the steps required, please let me know.

Step 1
Scan with DDS
  • Please download DDS … by sUBs. Save it to your desktop. Alternate download links here or here.
  • Disable any script blocking software you have running before running DDS.
  • Double click dds.com to run the tool. (File name will be different if alternate download used).
A black window will open with some instructions/comments…
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
Caution: The above logs will NOT be saved… you must save them to your desktop.
  • Please post both logs in your next reply.

Please include in your next reply:
  • DDS.txt
  • Atach.txt
  • Any changes in your computer's behavior
Thanks for getting back to me. Here are the two files: . Hi itpro52d,

your logs indicate a few minor items but nothing so far that explains the symptoms that you described so I think we should take a deeper look.

Step 1
Back up registry with ERUNT
  • Please download ERUNT by Lars Hederer and save it to your desktop. alternate download
  • Double click erunt-setup-exe and follow the prompts to install ERUNT using the default settings.
  • When asked if you want to add ERUNT to the Start-up folder select NO
  • Make sure the box marked launch ERUNT is checked and click Finish
  • Follow the prompts to create a backup to the default location.
  • under backup options make sure both the following are selected:
    • System registry.
    • Current user registry.
  • When you see a pop up message saying Registry backup is complete! click OK to finish. If you do not see this message DO NOT continue let me know.

Step 2
MGADiag.exe
  • Please download MGA Diagnostic Tool and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on MGADiag.exe to run it.
  • Click Continue.
  • The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  • Once done, click on Copy.

Hi itpro52d,

I am afraid I have some bad news.

Rootkit!
I have reviewed your log and found your computer has been infected with a Rootkit
A rootkit is a set of software tools intended for concealing running processes, files or system data from the operating system. This allows the attacker to make changes to your system so that they can use it for malicious purposes without your knowledge. They can collect and transmit personal information including usernames, passwords, and personally identifiable information.

You are strongly advised to do the following:
  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft, put a watch on your accounts, and change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords
(ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, any online activity you perform, requiring a username and password).
Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.

Because your computer is infected with a rootkit it is impossible to know all the changes that may have been made to your system. The only responsible course of action would be to re-format and re-install your operating system.
Because we cannot know what changes were made, the computer can never be trusted again untill it has been re-formatted.

Please see the following article for more information.
How to Reformat and Reinstall Windows
Thanks for you reply. So since I'm doomed to reinstall Windows, I figured I'd let TDSSKiller perform the cure action after I did a restore point. It did and the problem is gone. Sounds like you are not comfortable that the problem is in fact gone. That begs the question why would anyone need or trust Kapersky if its just an analytical tool and not meant to fix and repair viruses? Regardless, I followed the link to "How to Reformat and Reinstall Windows". There are actually no instructions there on how to do this. More like recommendations on what to do after you've restored your system. By reformat do you mean to format the user partition before laying down a fresh copy of Windows? The PC in question is an HP machine that offers a Destructive system restore where all files are lost. I assume it gets its image from the D:\ drive. How would I know that the OS image on D:\ is not compromised? So that begs the question, do I have to install Windows from a CD? Thanks, Eric
Hi Eric,

My apologies, I somehow managed to give you the wrong link for the tutorial.

Yes, a destructive recovery will format the user partition, so either a destructive recovery or fresh install from disk will work.
Please see this HP article for more information on a destructive recovery.

A few tips to help you stay clean
If you want to stay malware free, you must keep your software up to date. Here are a couple of free programs that will help with that.
  • Secunia Personal Software Inspector - Copyright © Secunia.
  • F-secure Health Check - Copyright © F-Secure Corporation.
Make sure you keep Windows updated.
Make sure you keep the latest updates installed for Internet explorer. (This is important even if you typically use a different browser).
