Hello,

I purchased a Asus Laptop from BestBuy last month already setup. So far, I've noticed my toolbar, background, & screensaver settings always changing. I will set the color and locktask bar to find those settings changed to something else. Should I be concerned? When I began the scan of HiJack This this is what first appears——-For some reason your system denied write access to the host file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HiJack This may not be able to fix this. Then preceeds to tell how to edit file by going to

notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

I do this and this is what is in the file——

# Copyright © 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# [removed] x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

I click go & run the scan….and this is the result below——-

Hello there, Asha

:welcome:

I'm Conspire, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Read the entire procedure
  • It is important to perform ALL actions in sequence.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with me till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
  • Don't attempt to clean your computer with any tools other than the ones I ask you to use during the cleanup process.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete anything unless instructed to. Remember to backup all your important data(if possible) before moving on.

—————————————————————————————————

The host file denied the write access is completely normal due to the User Access Control (UAC) feature that is in Windows 7 and Vista. If you right click and select Run As Admin with HJT, it will be able to run smoothly.

Can you please describe further this statement to me? Best if you could provide a screenshot.

So far, I've noticed my toolbar, background, & screensaver settings always changing. I will set the color and locktask bar to find those settings changed to something else.

Hi Conspire, Thank you for your assistance. To elaborate on my statement-'So far, I've noticed my toolbar, background, & screensaver settings always changing. I set my desktop background, system sounds, windows color scheme, and screen saver, but then i check and its a different color scheme, background, sounds, are changed. the desktop toolbar autohides even thought i lock it. These thing change all the time. I know the background can change but the other items, i thought were set once i configured them.
