Hi Oldman960,
Yes, I got it to work. Thank you.
When I play a video from my hard drive [mpg, wmv], if I play more than one [back to back] using Windows Media Player, I must PAUSE the first one before I drop out of Windows Media Player & play the next. If I fail to pause the first vid, the first one gets "stuck". i.e. although it can no longer be seen as playing, the app is still running. This can be seen via the Task Manager. I then have to operate on the Windows Media Player process via the Windows Task manager, which I leave running all the time. This I do so I can monitor the processes [i.e. Windows Media Player]. If the Media player gets "stuck", I can kill it easily, using "End Process".
This problem does not manifest with audio files using Windows Media Player, and ONLY happens with Windows Media Player.
Do you have a way of bringing all of my USB ports back up?
The assumption is that they have shorted out [although with no hard evidence]. But why ALL of them [two] would short out at the same time, I have no idea.
I used to run my mouse from a USB port. Had to "drop back" to use a PS2 mouse as my USB ports suddenly became non-operative. Strange thing is, when they all went in the soup, there were also other software [virus type] issues happening {not hardware} [software [virus type] issues - i.e. some slowing of the machine, etc.]
I have run with the task manager up for so long, it has become SOP for me
Thanks.
Those 2 problems may be best addressed in the Tech side of our forum. Maybe the Microsoft Windows™ forum.
There are several causes of usb port failure including SP2's problem with USB2.0. An update for SP2 was released sometime ago to correct that. Did the ports work when you were using the other harddrive? What was the Service Pack level on that drive?

SP2's problem with USB2.0. may be the problem. At least I hope so, That would be an easy fix
Re: "Did the ports work when you were using the other harddrive?"
Yes. And I don't just remember at what point they tanked. That Hd was at SP3
Re: "update for SP2 was released sometime ago" Does that mean that the correction is included with SP2? Or is it with SP3?
Re: "Those 2 problems may be best addressed in the Tech side of our forum. Maybe the Microsoft Windows™ forum."
If after implementing SP3 [provided that SP3 has the USB2.0 fix], I will determine the need to post over on the Microsoft Windows™ forum..
Hi peteinmaine,
I'm not sure if SP3 will fix the usb problem or not, it won't hurt though. SP3 should include all patches and updates that where previously released.
Let me know how you make out there are a couple of things that we can try here before you head over to the techs.
OOOOOO-YEA! You dah MAN! . . . for providing the SP3 update link!
After installing the SP3 update while still using the PS2 mouse, I plugged in a USB stick drive. PRESTO! I could "see" it & navigate through the directories on it. My belief is now that I may reboot with the USB mouse connected !
I had left the IE update till last , because I don't use it unless absolutely necessary.
Currently, I am using my wife's machine while mine does the updates . . .
News Flash!!!!!! My machine is UP. My USB mouse is UP. My camera connection to upload pics is UP. My printers are UP!
Oh & BTW, I misstated that I had 2 USB ports. I have four. All the MORE reason that it was VERY curious that all FOUR USB ports would go DOA at once. That is why I fully expected that the SP3 update would eliminate my USB problem.
At this point, I believe the only prob still remaining is the Windows Media Player "stickiness". For that, I can head on over to the Tech side of the forum, to the Microsoft Windows™ forum. If I have missed anything, please don't hesitate to mention.
I will take this moment to say that it certainly has been a pleasure working with you. It is a joy to be able to work with someone who is professional, knowledgeable & and also knows how to convey that knowledge succinctly. I have also learned some more about the machine, as well as a few "tricks" [easy ones] for posting here.
Cheers & be well!
Should you send one last reply, I will be checking this thread one more time.
Hi peteinmaine,
From all the smilies this looks like it might be the happiest day of your life since your 21st birthday (or whatever the age of majority is there).
The pleasure has been all mine and glad I could be of help. The only suggestion I have as for Media Player is an uninstall/reinstall. But I suggest you check with the Techs it may be something very simple.
You can either keep SystemLook or just delete it. The tool has no fixing capabilities so you can't accidently do something you shouldn't.
Take care, keep safe.
