Hi Jason1970, Either is fine, just needed to see the screenshot, thanks. The infection that I suspected isn't there. Hmm… Are you getting redirected in Internet Explorer? Firefox? Both browsers? Does it happen all the time? Where do you get redirected?
I am being redirected to the conduit search engine with Chrome & I can't change my browser home pg back to google. IE doesn't seem affected. The white smoke tool bar is gone. I only use Chrome except for this removal stuff where I use IE 8 now
I should probably mention that when I open control panel/internet options/general/home page it shows google as my home page yet when I open the chrome browser it opens at the conduit search engine. hope this is helpful
Hi Jason1970,

Thanks for the clarification. For some reason, I can't see the Chrome data in the OTL log. Can you please download the updated version of OTL from the link below and run it?

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    consrv.dll
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    /md5stop
    C:\Windows\assembly\tmp\U\*.* /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Post both logs
here is the OTL log however the only "extras.txt" log I could find is from Dec 30/2011

Hey Jason1970,

Looks like OTL failed to fix the Chrome search providers. Can you please right click the URL bar in Chrome (where you type web addresses and search for things) > Select Edit Search Engines > Hover your mouse over Conduit > Click the X on the right.

Next, hover your mouse over Google and choose Make Default.

Let me know if that works for you.
Hi, success.I edited the search engines as U suggested & additionally I removed the bing search engine from the Chrome://Settings/Browser/Options/Basics menu/Search/manage Search Engines, I did a search of "All files & folders" & did not find anything with the name conduit however in the "On Startup" area I can still see the conduit search engine greyed. Any ideas? can it still pose a threat?
btw I had to make the Chrome browser my default B4 it would let me delete the conduit browser, took me a few to figure that 1 out
Great! My pleasure Jason1970 :).

Now let's clean up the tools we used.

Please delete DDS, getPartitions, aswMBR, and TDSSKiller from your desktop.

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now copy/paste Combofix /uninstall into the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the ..X and the /U, it needs to be there.

===================================================

Clean up with OTL:
  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Updates
  • It is very important that you keep your Operating System and applications up to date so that you will be less susceptible to malware.
  • It's a good idea to have Windows Update automatically download and install updates as they become available.
  • Secunia Online Software Inspector is a great tool that will tell you which of your applications are outdated and vulnerable to attack.
Run Anti-Virus Software
  • For an excellent list of free anti virus software, free online virus scanners, free spyware detection/removal and free firewalls, click here.
  • IMPORTANT! Please make sure you only have ONE firewall and ONE real-time antivirus installed on your system.
  • When using "on demand" scanners, first update the detection signature files, then disconnect from the internet and disable your resident security program before running the scan.
  • Once complete, remember to re-engage your resident security before going online.
Passwords
  • It is good security practice to change your passwords to all your online accounts on a fairly regular basis, this is especially true after an infection.
  • Refer to this Microsoft article
Strong passwords: How to create and use them and consider a password keeper, to keep all your passwords safe.
Spyware Protection
  • This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles:
  • How to Prevent Malware by miekiemoes
  • PC Safety and Security–What Do I Need?
Additional Software
  • To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements.
  • Google Chrome is a great alternative to Internet Explorer and Firefox.
Follow these steps, keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated, and scan with them on a regular basis. By doing so, your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck.

Do you have any further questions?

**Please respond one more time to confirm your problem is resolved so I can close this thread.
Hi & thank U so much for your help. I followed your uninstall instructions & everything looks fine, again thank you. I couldn't get my acrobat reader to update per the Secunia software scan's suggestion, it would stop less than 50% thru the install & would timeout, tried it 4 times with the same result, don't know how to get around it, any suggestions? That is the only issue remaining that I can think of. I can't afford the full acrobat suite, just need to be able to read pdf files. Can't really afford any software so must make do with shareware & freeware.
