Hi, I seem to have a common problem with browsers (IE and Firefox) being redirected, like ilovechickens89. The other symptom is that one of the two users on this PC has had all desktop links and start menu items disappear. Since the documents cannot be found, they haven't been backed up. I tried to "unhide" items through the control panel and "sfc /scannow" but no luck.

Thanks for your help :-)

Nothing bad showing on your HJT log but we dont use that program much anymore.

Have each of your users run this Unhide program

Download to your desktop
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Once the program has been downloaded, double-click on the Unhide.exe icon on your desktop and allow the program to run. This program will remove the +H, or hidden, attribute from all the files on your hard drives. If there are any files that were purposely hidden by you, you will need to hide them again after this tool is run.

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it

Click the "Scan" button to start scan
[external image: Posted Image]

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply
[external image: Posted Image]

Download DDS from one of the links below to your desktop

Link 1
Link 2

  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • A black Screen will open, just read the contents and do nothing.
  • When the tool finishes, it will open 2 reports, DDS.txt and attach.txt
  • Copy/Paste the contents of 'DDS.txt' into your post.
  • 'attach.txt' should be zipped using Windows native zip utility and attached to your post. Compress and uncompress files (zip files)
Hi Ken - thanks for your help. I had a little success, but more problems unhide.exe –> now I can see my files that had been hidden, but the start menu is not restored (the message box instructed me to temporarily disable virus programs; I disabled AVG and Symantec Endpoint, but re-running unhide.exe did not help to populate start menu) When I view my running processes, I still have things running like AVG Tray Monitor, Symantex CMC SmcGui, Symantec User Session, Symantec Antivirus DoScan.exe and SavUI.exe, but I don't see how these are the problem given that I've disabled them. aswMBR.exe –> when I double-clicked on this icon, nothing popped up (virus software was still disabled) despite multiple attempts DDS –> this seems to run fine, and I get an almost full line of ### at the bottom of the window. However, it never seems to finish (again, virus software was disabled). I tried to run this program a couple of times. In the end, it never finishes or writes the log files that you mentioned, and my PC is frozen at that point, requiring a hard boot. I gave the program 15-20 min to run, while the screen tells me that it will only need three min. Thoughts?
Good Morning,

You need to uninstall one Antivirus program, two are overkill and will severely hamper system performance, you should have just one, keep it updated and run regular scans. Your call which one to keep but uninstall one via Programs and Features in the Control Panel.

After you uninstall one AV, then try both aswMBR and DDS again, if still a no go than try both of these programs.

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
  • Double click GMER.exe.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan…click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
      [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
  • Save the log where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Please copy and paste the report into your Post.

OTL by OldTimer
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.
Hello again, I still was not able to run DDS (froze) or aswMBR (never opened), so I ran GMER and OTL per your instructions.

GMER did not find anything, so the log is empty.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
I followed the instructions to turn off virus protection, firewall, etc. When I run ComboFix, I get to the message where it says "this typically takes 10 min, but can easily double for an infected computer." Without any other programs running, I've given ComboFix 40+ minutes to run, but my PC freezes - no mouse movement, no ctrl-alt-delete response, no clock update. After a hard shutdown, I've tried again with the same result a couple of times. Thoughts?
Lets try running Combofix in Safemode

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Networking
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode
This time I've been running in safemode with networking, and the PC doesn't freeze. However, the ComboFix program has been running for ~90 min without ever getting past the stage mentioned before. Would there be any point in trying to run DDS (froze before) or aswMBR (never opened) in safemode? Any other ideas? :-)
Hi,

Lets try it this way

  • Physically disconnect from the internet and STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields)
  • Click on your START button and choose Run. Then copy/paste the entire code in RED (Including the "" marks and the Symbols) into the run box.

Go to [external image: Posted Image] Then Run

    "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click OK and this will start ComboFix in a special way.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to a Notepad File to post in your next reply .

    Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  • After you have saved the logs, restart your system to re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix.
  • Reconnect to the internet
  • Post the Report
  • You can find it at C:\ComboFix.txt
Good morning- running ComboFix through the run command in safemode without an internet connection still did not enable the program to finish & print a report. The progress stops at the same point, telling me it typically takes 10 minutes…, but I don't get any further. The PC does not freeze like before though. thanks again.
Lets give it one more try Bring up Task Manage using CTRL+ALT+DELETE. See if any of these processes are running …If they are then Kill process on the first one and then try CF again, try Kill process on each one until CF runs findstr sed grep. nircmd.exe nircmd.cfexe swsc.cfexe * .. or any other process that has the .cfexe extension except for CFxxx.cfexe If ComboFix is still 'hung', then kill process on CFxxx.cfexe
Hello again. I was surprised to see that I didn't have any of the processes running that you mentioned. The only ones that I had running are listed below. I keep wondering if I've got all of my AV programs shut down, so I've gone through the entire list you've sent me again. Windows Defender and Firewall are shut down, Symantec is disabled, etc. So I'm doing my best to follow all of your instructions! ccSvcHst.exe Symantec Service framework csrss.exe Client server runtime process " " explorer.exe Windows Explorer lsass.exe lsm.exe Rtvscan.exe services.exe Smc.exe SmcGui.exe smss.exe svchost.exe (x10) System System Idle Process taskmgr.exe wininit.exe winlogon.exe
