Rootkit infection

I noticed some problems with my system caused by some Malware with the name of "XP Internet Security 2010". I ran MalwareBytes and I don't seem to get the pop-ups from that particular Malware…

But there are other things that are creating problems. Mainly, when I start my computer I have HitmanPro run automatically. If finds an infected file and says that a Rootkit(?) by the name of afd.sys, is located in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers directory. But it cannot remove it when prompted.

I also have a process by the name of Ping.exe that seems to take over the CPU and keep re-starting itself when terminated via the Task Manager. In addition, I get browser redirects in FireFox and rogue setup.exe's.

Hope this is enough information, and thanks in advance for your help!
Dave

Hello SocialDave and :welcome:

My name is JonTom

  • Malware Logs can sometimes take a lot of time to research and interpret.
  • Please be patient while I try to assist with your problem. If at any time you do not understand what is required, please ask for further explanation.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Read every reply you receive carefully and thoroughly before carrying out the instructions. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive, as in some instances you may have to disconnect your computer from the Internet.
  • PLEASE NOTE: If you do not reply after 5 days your thread will be closed.

This machine is badly infected.

I can see evidence of the Zero Access (ZA) rootkit. This infection is very difficult to remove and the fix can take some time. Should you wish to perform a reformat and reinstallation of your operating system let me know. ZA is a backdoor trojan that has password stealing capabilities. If you use your machine for any kind of online banking etc, please use an uninfected machine to change all of your passwords as soon as you can.

It would be wise to back up all of your important data at this point.

Before we begin I would like to see the log produced from the following tool:

  • Please scan your system with GMER

    [external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
    • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
    • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
    • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
    • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOTKIT" entries

Please post the GMER log in your next reply. If you encounter any problems with the scan come back and let me know.

I would also like to see the DDS attach.txt that would have been produced when you ran DDS.
JonTom, thank you SO MUCH for responding. The problem is in the process of being resolved. If you could lock or delete this topic I would appreciate it. Thank you again for your attention and help! SocialDave
