A few days ago I started getting occasional messages from my AV program, which is webroot, that something called alg10.job, alg3.job, alg7.job,etc. is trying to access the internet, and that the AV blocked it. When I call up my task manager, I see that ping.exe is opening every few seconds, even when I end the task, and is consuming about 200,000 kb of memory, which it has never done before. I updated and ran malware bytes, but while it found three things, it didn't fix this particular problem. In addition, all my google searches now redirect to 'threatening sites',' not sure if this is connected or not. I see several other topics related to this, but I figured it would be best to get some specific help so I don't screw anything up. Below is the contents of my DDS.txt. Thanks in advance for your help and time. ————– . Hi,

Please do the following:

  • Please download aswMBR.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click aswMBR.exe to start the tool. (Vista/Windows 7 users - right click to run as administrator)
  • When asked if you want to download Avast's virus definitions please select Yes.
  • Click Scan

  • Upon completion of the scan, click Save log and save it to your desktop, and post that log in your next reply for review. Note - do NOT attempt any Fix yet.
  • You will also notice another file created on the desktop named MBR.dat. Right click that file and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) file. Attach that zipped file in your next reply as well.
Ok, did what you said, and below is the log that the scan produced. However, nothing called MBR.dat showed up on my desktop, even though the log says it was created. Would it have saved somewhere else? In addition, I can't post on this forum unless I'm running in safe mode. I get a "Connection to Server was Reset" error as soon as I hit the 'add reply' button. Thanks again for your time. ———————- aswMBR version 0.9.8.986 Copyright© 2011 AVAST Software Run date: 2011-11-29 21:55:34 —————————– 21:55:34.640 OS Version: Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 21:55:34.640 Number of processors: 1 586 0x209 21:55:34.640 ComputerName: D6XXK981 UserName: 21:55:36.015 Initialize success 22:07:54.093 AVAST engine defs: 11112902 22:08:00.906 Disk 0 (boot) \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 -> \Device\Ide\IdeDeviceP0T0L0-3 22:08:00.906 Disk 0 Vendor: Maxtor_6Y080L0 YAR41BW0 Size: 76293MB BusType: 3 22:08:00.906 Device \Driver\atapi -> DriverStartIo RGRCZ@J@ f746a7c6 22:08:02.953 Disk 0 MBR read successfully 22:08:02.968 Disk 0 MBR scan 22:08:03.734 Disk 0 unknown MBR code 22:08:03.734 Disk 0 MBR hidden 22:08:04.125 Disk 0 scanning sectors +156232125 22:08:04.234 Disk 0 malicious Win32:MBRoot code @ sector 156232128 ! 22:08:04.250 Disk 0 PE file @ sector 156232150 ! 22:08:04.265 Disk 0 MBR [Win32:MBRoot] **ROOTKIT** 22:08:04.265 Disk 0 trace - called modules: 22:08:04.265 ntoskrnl.exe CLASSPNP.SYS disk.sys >>UNKNOWN [0x8a3eff10]<< 22:08:04.656 1 nt!IofCallDriver -> \Device\Harddisk0\DR0[0x8a717ab8] 22:08:04.656 3 CLASSPNP.SYS[f764805b] -> nt!IofCallDriver -> [0x8a3e2ae0] 22:08:04.671 \Driver\00001248[0x8a42bf38] -> IRP_MJ_CREATE -> 0x8a3eff10 22:08:11.093 AVAST engine scan C:\WINDOWS 22:09:44.015 AVAST engine scan C:\WINDOWS\system32 22:23:14.984 AVAST engine scan C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers 22:24:06.140 File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\serial.sys **INFECTED** Win32:Aluroot [Rtk] 22:24:29.718 AVAST engine scan C:\Documents and Settings\ 22:41:49.062 File: C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\0.11265331696002967exe **INFECTED** Win32:Cycbot-OD [Trj] 22:43:30.375 File: C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\395.5523.exe **INFECTED** Win32:FakeAV-CND [Trj] 22:46:29.250 File: C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\jar_cache4410521313348475383.tmp **INFECTED** Win32:Cycbot-OD [Trj] 22:46:30.031 File: C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\jar_cache6881481333109258640.tmp **INFECTED** Win32:FakeAV-CND [Trj] 23:06:05.796 AVAST engine scan C:\Documents and Settings\All Users 23:15:22.062 Scan finished successfully 23:22:23.859 Disk 0 MBR has been saved successfully to "C:\Documents and Settings\\Desktop\MBR.dat" 23:22:25.359 The log file has been saved successfully to "C:\Documents and Settings\\Desktop\aswMBR.txt"

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
Ok, thanks for getting back to me, here are the two TDSS logs:

Thanks again for helping me out.
Hi

Please do the following:

Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe and save it to your desktop.
Close out all other open programs and windows.
Double click the file to run it and follow any prompts.
If the tool detects an mbr infection, please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

helpasst -mbrt

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
When it completes, a log will open.
Please post the contents of that log.

*In the event the tool does not detect an mbr infection and completes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

mbr -f

Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.
Now shut down the computer (do not restart, but shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
Give it about 5 minutes, then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

helpasst -mbrt

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
When it completes, a log will open.
Please post the contents of that log.

**Important note to Dell users - fixing the mbr may prevent access the the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not allow the tool to execute mbr -f nor execute the command manually, and you will either need to restore your computer to a factory state or allow your computer to remain having an infected mbr (the latter not recommended).
Ok, it said that it didn't detect anything, so I followed the second set of instructions you posted and got this log:

Please re-run ComboFix, allow it to update if it asks to do so
Things are running much more smoothly now, and ping.exe has stopped appearing at all. I did like you said, and here are the two logs:

Well, I can't believe this has happened, but I've apparently already got the google redirect virus again, and now I can't open the task manager. Whenever I try, it tells me that the administrator has blocked my access to it. I ran the helpasst cleanup step that you mentioned, and was waiting to run malware bytes until tomorrow, when I got a message from webroot that something to the effect of ~5c#.tmp was trying to access the network. I blocked it, but as soon as I did, my screen flashed several times like it was refreshing, then everything I had open crashed, and some sort of run32.dll error started popping up in rapid succession, and there was something about a file being corrupted. They were popping up so fast that I didn't have time to read them, and I did a hard shut down as they were filling up the screen. I'm running in safe mode now, but I can't go to any google sites, webroot is once again saying that I'm being sent to a threatening website. I haven't even been using the internet while trying to get this straightened out, and I have asked my wife to stay off until this was finished, but she told me she got on anyways for a few minutes this afternoon and went to a bunch of sites that sell cosmetics. She didn't buy anything, but what are the odds that these sites are the source of the virus?
Remembered that I had a program called SafeTask manager on here, used it to call up the task manager and ping.exe is back and once again consuming most of my cpu and a bunch of memory. What are the odds that personal information has been compromised? Should I go ahead and run malware bytes?
Ok, ran combofix again. Said I had a zero access rootkit infection which is difficult to remove? Here is the log:
