Shutting Down: - Shutting Down Windows Update Service - Something that comes and goes too quickly for me to read (I've tried reading it several times) - Stopping all services - Shutting Down Starting up: - Please Wait for User Profile Service - Preparing Your Desktop It doesn't seem weird, aside from the fact that before I was infected with the rootkit, this never happened.
Hello ClementZ

Please do a custom scan with OTL…
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output
  • In the window under Custom Scans/Fixes copy and paste the following

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /RS

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open a notepad window OTL.txt . This saved in the same location as OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents and post it with your next reply.

Please scan the following file(s) with Virus Total
  • Please visit Virus Total by clicking here.
  • Click the Browse button and search for the following files (if present):
    • C:\Windows\SysNative\winlogon.exe
  • Click Open.
  • Then click Send File.
  • Please be patient while the file is scanned.
  • If Virus Total tells you that the file has already been scanned, click "reanalyse now".
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the link to the results page in your next reply.

========== Custom Scans ==========

< HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /RS >

< End of report >

I have found the winlogon.exe file (several, actually), however, it's not in the SysNative folder.
They're all in winxs.
Should I scan them anyways?
Hello ClementZ

Sorry my instructions were incorrect.

Please do the OTL scan with this entry in the custom scans/fixes box:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies|System /rs

And please check this place for the winlogon.exe file:

C:\Windows\System32\winlogon.exe

Lol, it's okay.

And again, winlogon.exe isn't in my System32 folder.
EDIT: It's in my System32 folder, I just can't seem to find it when I choose browse on that site for some reason.
Hello ClementZ

When you visit Virus Total, instead of searching for the directories and the file name in the browse window, start typing the path in the "file name" text box in the browse dialog. The browse dialog has a file name completion feature that will show you what is available as you type the path to the file.

Failing that, just copy the file to a directory where it is the only file there and browse to that.

Here is a re-post of the Virus Total upload instructions, along with a new task to change one of your registry entries:
  • Please visit Virus Total by clicking here.
  • Click the Browse button and search for the following files (if present):
    • C:\Windows\System32\winlogon.exe
  • Click Open.
  • Then click Send File.
  • Please be patient while the file is scanned.
  • If Virus Total tells you that the file has already been scanned, click "reanalyse now".
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the link to the results page in your next reply.
Next,

In the code box below is regedit code to hopefully eliminate those logon/logoff messages. Please copy/paste it into Notepad.exe and save on your desktop as Unset.reg

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

;
; Unset VerboseStatus
;
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"VerboseStatus"=dword:00000000

double click the Unset.reg file, accept all the prompts, and then reboot your computer.

Let us know how it goes :)

Maybe I need to run a defrag + disk cleanup.
Hello ClementZ

Try these for cleanup and defrag:

Cleanout Temp Files:

Please download OldTimer's Temp File Cleaner. Get it here.

  • This program will close all applications before it begins.
  • So, please save all work before running it.
  • While it is running, the desktop will disappear. This is normal.
  • After it cleans, you may have to allow it to restart your computer.
  • To run it, double click on the TFC.exe file you downloaded.
  • Save all your work in any open windows.
  • Click the "Start" button in the lower left corner of the TFC application window.
  • Allow the program to complete

Download and install Puran Defrag

  • During installation, be sure and uncheck the checkbox for downloading/installing Babylon 9
  • Bring up the application
  • Select your drive(s)
  • Click the "Defrag" button

Please let us know how it went :)
Hello ClementZ

Comp seems to be running normally now.

Happy to hear it

Now we can cleanup our tools:
  • Please remove the logs we created and the .reg file
  • TDSSKiller
  • aswmbr.exe
  • MBRCheck.exe

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix

  • Make sure your security programs are totally disabled.
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now copy/paste Combofix /uninstall into the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the ..X and the /U, it needs to be there.
[external image: Posted Image]

The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Next, Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

Next,

Open OTL then click the Clean Up button. You may get prompted by your firewall that OTL wants to contact the internet - allow this. A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will do some clean up tasks and delete some of the tools you have downloaded plus itself.

I suggest you keep MBAM. Keep it updated and use it regularly.
ESET online scan can be removed via add/remove programs.

Next, we have a few recommendations to help you stay malware-free:

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

WOT , Web of Trust, As 'Googling' is such an integral part of internet life, this free browser add on warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. It is especially helpful when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
Green to go
Yellow for caution
Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.
